Canon New F-1 Review 

Dear film community, thank you for your super quick and kind feedback yesterday on the initial version of this video which referred to the wrong version of the camera. I took your feedback to heart, rewrote most of the text and sat down this morning to record the moderation anew. It is now a proper assessment of the correct version of the camera. Please excuse the mix up. :)

For some time I was thinking about offering one of my New F1's to you for a review, but to my big pleasure you developed the idea by yourself. As for the weight of this tank of a camera I suggest making it even heavier by mounting a motor-drive. This adds weight to what I call the right side of the camera/lens-combination. With longer focal-lengths from 85 up to 200 mm this setup works as something like an image-stabilizer; you can take razor-sharp images at quite slow shutter-speeds. If you want to try, just give me a message. Sending a motor-drive from Stuttgart to Munich is no big affair. Thanks for the video.

Trained as a U.S. Army Still Photo Specialist, 8 months of school in 1979 at Lowry AFB Denver Colorado. We used the original Canon F1 kit in our 35mm block of instruction. Excellent camera and accessories suitable for any job thrown at it.

Bought a New F1 brand-new in 1985. It is still in regular use and still works perfectly. Great review.

Wonderful and thoughtful presentation .. this camera is and remains one of my all time favorite cameras to use. I absolutely loved working with it. Still have the old F1 and later added two New F1Ns - still fully working and yes, capable machines .. and a shutter button with a sound and feel that I have missed in every camera moving into the future. I stayed loyal to the Canon FD system till they stopped making them, and never kindled that feeling with Canon's EOS system. Perhaps it was just me, but I loved the work-flow with the FD system. Of course, I would try others and developed a relationship with the Nikon F5 and the Nikon F100 .. but the Canon produced some beautiful pictures for me.

Wonderfull review for this camera that I bought in 1984 and which always works perfectly! It is a very robust camera which works even without batteries and that you can bring every where even if the temperature is very low!

We used these things when I was in the Navy (U.S.) back in the mid 1980's. They were real work horses - we had a cabinet full of them, a couple 2 or 3 that had motor drives affixed to them - those were always up on the flight deck. Good, solid, reliable little camera. ( U.S.S. Midway CV-41 - it's now a museum in San Diego )

The AE finder FN allowed the addition of Aperture Priority, it was the commonest finder sold with the body, but there was a lighter prism that allowed only manual exposure. Addition of a winder or motor drive allowed the addition of Shutter Priority (if you can find them), and I believe there was a high-speed version (8fps) with a pellicle mirror and a unique fan-shutter.

I’ve got a Leica M3, a Hasselblad, contax rangefinders, etc and my favorite are my 2 New F-1s. Maybe tied with the Hasselblad. But the joy of using it beats the e Nikon F3 just my personal opinion.

Yet another great video Max , I remember in 1981 when this camera was released I lusted over owning one , I couldn’t afford one , I’d bought a canon A1 Winter Olympics edition in 1980 still have that camera . But it was the F1 New I wanted , I still have the photo magazines which reviewed the F1, SLR camera , practical photography etc , I finally bought a F1 new 6 years ago , it is everything I hoped for, the build quality a brass chassis, I love the weight , the film advance , firing the shutter, the sound of the mechanics , I’m lucky to own a lot of film cameras , contax , Olympus , leica ,Hasselblad , nikon , linhof but I love shooting with the F1 .

Hello Max, this video kindled in me a little nostalgia for the years I used a Canon A1 for professional photography in the 1980s and for a year in the 1970s when I lived in Munich and busked in the streets to make a living. Truly an amazing camera. I have two of them, and several lenses. I frequently carried both, one body with a color film and one body with black and white film. I still love this camera it brings back great memories. Thanks for the video!

F1 was my favorite film camera. Reliable and a joy to use.

Very good review , i had a NEW F1 from 86 for a few years along with a dozen or so lenses including a 55 1.2 and. 35mm f2 thorium 80-200L and a f2.8 200 great bit of kit, the lenses are clear and sharp with good contrast and good value next to Nikons , my only 2 problems were that , 1. the camera was too good , very easy to use and too take a good image especially with the good quality lenses .. so I sold it all , which I do miss if I am honest , and invested in canon rangefinder's p and vi-t instead and now a M2 , just to give myself some additional challenges :p.. And 2. the only other problem that with 35 f2 or 55mm 1.2 mounted the camera was almost as heavy as my 500cm and 80mm , a light setup it isn't , it is a solid lump of iron to be sure, for a lighter setup you are better off with A1 ... I have Recently bought a Nikon F as my SLR , yes an older generation camera but it has a high bar to beat with the canon NEW F1 , we will see how we go ,.. 3 years on I am always tempted when I see one for sale, and do recommend it for sure .. It and and the lenses are cheap for the quality and results they offer compared to their rivals .. the lenses will get you some of the best results possible for manual 35mm .. tip the canon classic is a fabulous website and knowledge base and community ,don't buy anything without spending time on it .. Most of the FD L Lenses are so good they are almost now in Leica money terriority .. eg the 85 and 55 aspherical ,50 and 135 but there are some very good value lenses too .. the 50mm 1.4 and 100 2.8 especially

I have 3 of these laying around, one was completely submerged in a river. But after a battery swap some cleaning and lubing it still works great.

I have an original F1 and the F1n, and I just love it, it is one of my favourite cameras to use.

The Canon New F-1 is both beauty and beast at the same time. I lug mine around and the shutter sound of the titanium shutter gets me going every time. The interchangeable focusing screens are rare to find but I eventually found a specific screen that has larger microprisms for fast aperture lenses. It makes focusing the f1.2 lenses effortlessly!

It's the only 35mm Film SLR from Canon, that i'd like. But prices are into 2023+ being just too expensive. And the FD, nFD lenses are all with that weird lock mechanism. That's why i really like Minolta MD & Nikon AI-S lenses. I wouldn't pay >= 500 for a New F1, even its a great camera, but it wasn't before Canon invented the EOS System into march 1987, that Canon ever had a serious chance into 35mm SLR terms against Nikon - and Nikon was king, with good reason. I've had the EOS 10, EOS 5, EOS 3 & EOS 650 from the start, and never liked their plasticky and brick-like appearance, albeit Canon EF mount. The Canon EF, new F1 was a different beast, for Canons FD mount predecessor. I have a few FD lenses still, 35/2.8 nFD, 50/1.4 FD, the 28-85 and 35-105 zooms, etc.

The beast & rarest was the ATG's Canon Gold New F-1TR High Speed Motor Drive (Sportfinder with rotations) titanium remote Shoots up to 14fps wirelessly up to 50km!

I once had an F1, with 600/4.5, on a tripod, shooting on a road in California, working with another photographer...I went back to my van, to get film, and, a semi came along...the other guy, on the OPP side of the road, with a wide lens, stepped onto the road, and the semi moved over a bit... I watched as the whole mass of my gear was blown over by the semi's "bow wave", landing upside down....🙀 The 600 was ripped off the body, and the viewfinder was a bit "thinner" than before 😿...but...I was able to put another viewfinder on, and that appeared to work, and another lens mounted ok!! A bit of careful testing, wide open with 85/1.8, showed that the film plane seemed ok... So, $1600 later, the 600's focus rail, and mount replaced, new viewfinder... Canon Calgary (thanks Kevin!) checked the body, and, after that terrible crash, still in spec!! So, yep, tough as nails! And, after traveling with another photographer in Europe, England, Russia, and western USA, his Nikon gear was not quite as robust, and had "strange" failure modes... Great review, maybe a bit "light", but you only had one setup to try out, so understand the limitations! Thanks!

Some pretty major drawbacks are the lack of AE lock, TTL flash and mirror lock up. Pretty lame not to have those features in a 'Pro' camera, especially one with Aperture-priority mode.

In some ways I actually prefer first two versions, seems like sealing has made some controls notably harder to turn, possibly making New F1 better suited for harshest of conditions, but it does feel different enough not to like it as much, but all 3 are great pieces of gear with much more solid feel than Nikon F's

I think that the Canon New F-1 are the best ever made analog SLR Camera for 135 film, second to none ! I have tried a LOT of Cameras, the Canon New F-1 and the Hasselblad 2000 FC are my two best ever favorite Cameras. If Leica and Zeiss had made Lenses for the Canon FDn mount, then the Canon New F-1 would have been perfect.

Hello, wonderful video about one of the best SLR cameras ever made. For 15 years I worked with both models, F-1, F-1n and New F-1. Both models where able to work in automatic mode (the first model with Servo EE finder and Booster T finder), but both models where first of all constructed as vameras with manual metering mode. In this case the spot metering screens and the selective metering screens were first choice (indicated by S or P in the designation), while in automatic mode the average metering (A) was the better choice. The change in the viewfinder look was not confusing, you could see at once which mode you are using, aperture value or time value. In those days, when changing programs and automatic modes where just invented (Canon A-1 und a little bit earlier by several Minolta models) you tailored your camera system depending on your job , for example portrait or football. You did not change your way of working every minute. Most the time the light was the same for many hours. On the New F-1 you can use the aperture priority mode with each kind of finder (but only the automatic finder shows the chosen speed). The time or speed priority mode, when the camera chooses the aperture, is only working with the motordrive or the much lighter and smaller winder mounted.

I used to have one of these canon F1n cameras back in 1980s and is well made all metal camera and works very well and is very reliable camera

My impression is that Canon asked a number of professionals what they wanted. They replied reliability and toughness. When asked about automation they replied “We are professionals we don’t need that”. So in its basic form it is a 100% manual camera, to get shutter or aperture priority, or auto wind-on you have to add accessories. Shutter priority is only possible with a winder attached. Canon were right the professionals wrong. I nearly always use mine in manual mode with the non-auto finder, and a partial area metering focus screen.

Thank you for all these beautiful insights. I own a New F1 and your review is really spot on. As my go-to camera I now switched to a Contax RTS, much lighter and the Zeiss lenses are superior with respect to the Canon FD ones. Worth mentioning, at least for me, the New F1 shutter has one of the sexiest sounds ever (only matched by some Leica R cameras...).

In the instruction manual for the Canon New F-1, attention is drawn to the fact that individual FL lenses cannot be used. Among them is the Canon FL 19mm f/3.5. But make no mistake. I have the Canon FL 19mm f/3.5 R (the R (retrofocus) version) and it can be used like the FD lenses, though without Aperture Priority/only in Manual mode. The Canon FL 19mm f/3.5 R is (I think) a rare lens. It was priced like the Leitz Super Angulon-R 21mm f/3.4 (around US$ 300) back in the day (1967). It was reviewed in Camera 35, December 1967/January 1968, and valued on the same high level as the Leitz lens.

I got one of these and an original F1 (Still have) as part of a deal in the 1980's and was amazed by the build quality and finish which rivaled Leica rather than Nikon. Wish I had kept it but when Canon dumped FD and went OES like many others I flt cheated and went for Nikon with few regrets.

Thanks for the reedit/reupload. I've never used a (New) F1, but it was my dream camera that I couldn't afford or really needed, and this version of the video is much more consistent with what I remember of the feature set. Not sure if you had/used the semi spot 12% metering area with the slide film but I used it a lot on FTb (actually one reason I chose Canon over Nikon) and it worked great on a full manual only camera. It's really sensitive to where you place the metering area though and IMO not that suited for AE.

Peter Parker's camera from the Raimi movies! One of the only Canon cameras (alongside the P) I've been genuinely interested in. This particular setup seems well-suited for low light photography with that ISO range and lens, I've been happy but somewhat limited by the OM-2n's max ISO of 1600 and looked at the Nikon FE with a max ISO of 3200, but this takes the cake, so to speak. I may have to investigate further 😄

Great review, thank you. Few remarks: Aperture-priority AE works also with ordinary Eye-level finder, you just don't see the corresponding exposure time, chosen by the camera (there is ingenious vertical display in the AE finder). The system offers spot, selective and center-weighted average metering, depending upon focusing screen used (A, P or S type). Amazing, extremelly reliable camera. I recommend reading THE NEW F-1 WORLD book from 1982 - you can find a free pdf on internet. Greetings, Peter

Amazing camera, own 2. Both unfortunately suffer from the same common issue, sticking mirror box. Makes them inoperable sadly. Amazing camera when working.

Yes it’s big, heavy and built like a tank, but it is a camera made to last. As a film shooter, I use it as my main camera and took it with me to Brazil. I expect it will still be working in another 40 years. The build quality is every bit as good as a Leica and a fraction of the price.

Make sure that if the battery dies, you remove it for the mechanical shutter

This is a great camera that I’ve taken all over the world. One positive given the solid metal build quality is that I have always had a rather heavy brick in my hand to deal with any muggers who come my way. That being said it really is a great camera for travel, close up and action photography. I use it for street photography all the time because it is responsive to fast shooting. Sure, this is a quite heavy camera body. But I definitely love to feel it in my hands, it's the opposite of a plastic toy. This beast is useful especially in damp, cold winter climate. The beauty of solidness and reliability. As for its weight, on the countermove: Some of the nFD lenses are pretty light ones, for example the 28mm F2.8, 50mm F1.8, 100mm F2.8 etc.

It definitely is a pretty one. Just for that reason I would consider it. But no….. I already do own a Nikon models F, F2, F3 FM3a and Olympus OM-1 and OM-4 and Leica M5 ……. no, no, no, no …. I must not buy another 35 mm system …. nononono…… soooo pretty ……. NOOOOO

Got another model Canon... The EF. Bought it, used, in 1977. It still works as well as the day I got it. Even with no mercury batteries. It has a built in converter. So the F-series cameras are of a great quality. But I might get an F-1 one of these days. Since the EF isn't very good for manual light measuring.

A fantastic machine! After the Canon New F-1, Nikon no longer ruled the SLR market. Canon slowly but surely conquered a larger/the largest part of the professional SLR market. A special thing about the light metering method on the New F-1 is that it depends on the type of focusing screen attached. There were 13 different focusing screens for centre-weighted average metering, 13 focusing screens for selective-area metering and about 7 focusing screens for spot metering. No switch on the camera itself.

Video @ 3:56 "aperture priority, shutter priority and manual mode" - Wow, he MISSED a rather large detail about the New Canon F-1 - As a couple of other commenters also pointed out, and ONLY when an MD or Winder ATTACHED, can the AE finder FN allow the option of SHUTTER Priority (It basically turned the camera into a Canon AE-1). So with a Power Winder, the camera has Manual, Auto Shutter speed and Auto Aperture capabilities; pretty impressive when compared to its less-featured competitor (Nikon F3).

I have the Olympus OM1 in perfect condition the David Bailey Jean Shrimpton Mini Skirt camera. Film makes you think deeply before taking the shot. It's all about $$$$$$.

Probably the best mechanical non autofocus canon ever made. With this ae-fn viewfinder and a motor it s a beast, it looks even more robust than a Nikon f3. It s my favorite canon with the T90 which was opening a new era of design. The FD lenses such as the Nikon AI ones are probably the best well made Japanese lenses with the takumar… and these lenses still works perfectly today giving the images a superb analog feeling very more attractive for portraits than the new chirurgical and hyper sharp digital lenses that you pay a large amount of money for this sharpness and that you need to softer in postproduction…. So quite nonsense.

Lovely camera.. I got one around 1983-1984 to add to my older F-1n kit, retiring my FTb. Even after getting a T-90 for the better sync speed a few years later, I used the 2 F-1s as my main cameras unless I needed the. better sync. My main reason was their Speed Finder, which permitted both waist-level and eye-level viewing just by twisting. (I feel that was the very best viewfinder in any SLR, especially for anyone wearing glasses.) Built like a tank, and very easy to use. I continued using those 3 cameras until 2003 when I started to work with an autofocus & digital SLR.

I used to work professionally with my F1 New bodies back in the days. The metering was much more precise than the metering of any Nikon body. Especially the possibility to change the metering mode with the diiferent screen in the viewer came in handy. My unterstanding of the switching display of the exposure time in the viewfinder was that I always knew if I was schooting in automatic of manual exposure. BTW the transport was very accurate which was also usefule as I was mostly photographing for audiio visual shows.

Hello, until the day I saw this video I could not believe that someone could mix up both versions of the Canon F-1. In 1981 I bought an F-1 old brand new, my second Canon camera after the AE-1 and it felt so much bettr in my hands and the metering was so much better because of the selektive mode. I rarely missed the auto mode. Only a few days later (!) Canon announced the New F-1 (I still have the press release) and the differences were great. But it took 7 or 8 years before I bought a New F-1 , but used, because of the price. Both versions are perfect cameras in my opinion. In hands they feel much much much better than the plastic bodies of the A series, if you are willed to carry the weight including motor drives. But its not a shame to mix up the three versions of the F-1 if you are not familiar with them. I for example am not able to differenciate the many versions of Rolleiflex, Bolex or Arriflex cameras at first glance. Others shurely can do that. I am curious about your next video. I like them. Thank you for a really informative video. I was thinking about buying a Canon 'new' F1 n, I watched your video and now I am searching the internet to actually buy one.

Great video indeed, beautifully made. I just want to add one fact: three finders of the New F-1 have small window that mirrors a picture of the aperture ring into the viewfinder. Sometimes very helpful to determine the actual aperture if you do not use time priority and auto exposure. Most important: this works only with FDn lenses. If you use FD lenses with chrome mounting ring, you will see only this ring in the viewfinder, but no numbers.

Personal, I prefer the New F-1 over the Nikon F3 while the F2 was and still the king 👑 in mechanical shutter SLR category.

You can see the Canon F1, several times, in the film Salvador by Oliver Stone (1985) with James Woods.

Purchased a used one from B&H Photo 22 years ago and it's still in use today with the AE finder and AE motor winder. Love it and my T90, although I mostly shoot digital I'll never get rid of the two best Canon bodies of all time.

I’ve got two F1’s. Really indestructible camera’s, they still work but the batteries of the winder leaked and I don’t know how to clean the corrosion. I’m afraid that I have to take the winder apart to do it.

Thank you for this video on the New F1. I have owned both the New F1 and the F1n, and they are so different that I’d love to see you do a future video on the original F1 or the F1n. I tend to enjoy shooting more with the older F1n because it is totally mechanical and has more of a vintage, 70’s feel and experience to it.

Tip 1: to get the mechanical speeds 1/70-2000 you first have to remove the battery. Tip 2: adding the 2x winder (plastic) not only lets you get shutter priority, but provides a handy grip both vertically and horizontally. No need for batteries, unless you need auto wind-on or shutter priority. If you do, use lithium AAs as they’re much lighter and work well in the cold. You still need to have a battery in the camera!

Wasn't the new F-1 in production longer than the Canon T60 (introduced in 1990)?

It’s a beautiful rugged camera. Some extra fun facts: ~ It will shoot and meter in auto mode with any prism, or no prism on at all, just set to A ~ Stop down metering works with any properly adapted lenses, and in auto mode, for example a Helios 44 lens can be shot on the F1 super easily with an M42-FD adapter etc ~ It’s weather sealed (though I wouldn’t test that these days after so many years) ~ The matte black finish is referred to as parkerised - A durable military spec finish 🎞🎞

Combining the rotating speed finder with the laser matte J screen yields the best viewfinder experience in an SLR camera ever, at least for someone that wears glasses. I have owned all of the other professional options, and I kept the Canon. It is a tank, sure, but when I want a lighter camera I use a rangefinder. When I want close focusing, a waist level finder, or telephoto, nothing compares to this camera with the speed finder.

Great video as usual. I am a retired Navy Photographer that used this camera extensively for more than 10 years. This was the most unreliable camera ever. We often had to carry 3 bodies. The previous versions were so much better. I love the Canon FD glass. To this day I adapt the lenses to my mirrorless cropped sensor cameras.

Yes, this camera was a real workhorse back in the day. I wish that someone made a film canister with a digital device to bring them into the 21st century. Film has become way too expensive to use anymore.

The New F-1 definitely had additional refinements, but just from an industrial design standpoint, I think the original F-1 and F-1n were aesthetically better looking cameras. It's kind of amazing looking back now that the FD mount-which was a wonderful system with the breech-lock-only lasted roughly 20 years before being discontinued. Quite brief compared to Leica and Nikon.

I love this camera, I inherited it from my dad and still practically in mint condition, I’ve been using it a lot when I travel, just recently went through a roll of CineStill 800T and omg the photos it produced are awesome

Love my new F1. Such a beast of a camera, with so many great features. I do enjoy having access to aperture priority, and being able to remove the view finder for a “waist level” finder experience! Great video 👍

The roughness of the leatherette put me right off it - F2AS felt so much better. Still, a confidence-inspiring camera and no reason why both should be active today except mould - don't even bother if there are first signs in the mirrorbox - it's going to be systemic and a no-go for servicing.

I#ve it too, the New-F 1. But the exposure metering system (under the left top plate of the camera) is not working. Does some one know a reliable service for it in Germany? Thanks for help!

Thanks for another great review and bringing back memories of Würzburg too. Love to visit family and friends there. When much younger, I remember hauling around a Minolta XK with about 3 fast/heavy lenses. Recently scanned a lot of the old slides and film. 30-45 years later, still amazed at the quality. of analog.

i have the New F1, with the AE Finder FN, FD 50mm f1.4 and the FD 70-210mm f4.0 Zoom..i don't know where i can have them cleaned and working again because it just stop working and the film crank seem to get stuck., had the 50 f1.4 cleaned and working but the 70-210 needs cleaning too... i might sell it if someone wants it...

I would love to own a New F1 but can’t find one. Looking to get back into film photography however it appears that the only company manufacturing film cameras, is Leica.

Loved this video on a commonly overlooked Canon film camera. So I own a New F-1, an AE-1, and an A-1. Surprisingly, my favorite out of the three is the AE-1 simply because of the exposure meter. I wear hats a lot and I often find myself shooting in dark environment. Sadly, the New F-1 requires ambient light coming in from the top/front of the pentaprism through a small diffused window. This, in practice, is problematic for me anytime I wear a hat - which is nearly all the time. It's also borderline useless when you shoot in low light too. You can't read anything on the exposure meter. My copy also has the focusing screen slightly out of calibration as I have trouble getting some shots in focus because it will show in focus through the viewfinder and is simply not in focus in the final shot. It's really unfortunate because I loved this camera and I got it so incredibly cheap for "Minty" condition. haha But, after just 20 or so rolls of film, I've gone back to my trusty A-E1, which has been flawless, has a much better exposure meter that I know well, and is significantly lighter in weight. One day I'll send it in to a professional to calibrate the focusing screen since it's not something I believe I can do myself.

Ah a very cool review. I like the canon F1 new really and it is really really beautiful with its Matt black finish. I also learned new that all the fast speeds up to 1/2000 are mechanical. The last time my battery died two years ago, I only shot with 1/125s and f/22 because I thought I am stuck to this speed. Thank you for this info. 😊 But I do agree with the weight. It is in fact very heavy and a little reason I don’t take it with me more often.

I owned a New F1. Had to solt it together with my F3 and my F4. Wasn't used much. My only cam left from rhis age id my Nikon F100 with a bunch of lenses. Thanks for yr video!

I have a Pentax LX but have always respected the F-1 and the Nikon F3 which were its 1980's professional rivals. All similar but each had minor pros and cons. For example the Nikon has only one mechanical back-up speed and a weird hotshoe, the LX lacks an exposure lock, and I understand the F-1's aperture priority mode only works with one particular viewfinder. I suppose something was needed to differentiate them.

Once again, very well done! Now we are only missing a video about its contemporary rival, which dominated the market for several years: The Nikon F3. To me that one has quite a bit less of the external sturdiness and professional quirks of the Canon New F-1, feels quite a bit less like a mechanical tool and more like an improved and reinforced electronic camera.

I have an AE-1 Program and an AV-1, like you say they are the kind of camera that is better suited to photographic enthusiast use and they anable me to make good quality phtographs. Yet I would take the extra weight and the modular set up that I would not put to use to have the sensory experince of using a well engineerd camera. I handled an F-1 New back in the 80s and still have the memory of how good it felt to use.

I still have my original F1 (1973), though I now shoot with an R5. If I were to go back to 35mm, would the difference between the original F1 and the New F1 be significant enough to consider updating?

I shot with that camera. I liked adding the special "Super Bright Matte Focusing Screen."
