Canon Pixma MG6350: Is it possible to print in black & white with any or various of the color cartridges empty?

i have this printer and although my inklevels are fine it just doesn't prink in black it turns out greyish. How do i fix this?

Do you really have to cut out the plastic inside? Looked like there was plenty of room.
