Canon R5 - BIG AF problem and solution (bird photography tutorial)

The autofocus of the R5 is one of the best of all cameras and in many cases I’m especially amazed by the animal eye AF. However, the camera has one big autofocus problem. Once the focus is on the background it seems to be stuck on it and ignores everything in the foreground (like a bird). This can be very frustrating as it has already cost me several images. In this video I show you how I deal with this problem.

Great video. Definitely something that needs addressing in future firmware updates or iterations of this camera!

Thanks for the comment ☺️ I‘m somehow skeptical of this kind of issue can be fixed by a firmware upstate. Maybe with the R1 😅

it's a hardware issue of OSPDAF focus method, they are not able to measure phase difference on extreme defocused subjects. but can be fixed with workarounds methods. 1) search focus more 2) make camera button be capable to make focus presets (Olympus for example have this, on Canon you can only make focus preset with the lens buttons).

I usually bring the focus back by focussing on something close, usually the ground. This woks for the RF100-500 with a minimum focus distance of 0.9 meters.
@FabianFoppNaturephotography
@FabianFoppNaturephotography 2 года назад
That's actually a method I use as well :-) But sometimes (e.g. when sitting in a hide) it's really annoying and can disturb the birds if you move the lens too much

I‘m also not often doing it, but I quite enjoy the bird feeder in my garden from time to time 😊

Its driving me nuts too - I thought I had a problem with my R5 or 100-500 or both. I was photographing butterflies the other day and I had exactly the issue you illustrated in this video of the camera refusing to get the closer image as it had decided to lock onto the background. By the time I pointed the camera down to the floor and tried focusing on something closer than the butterfly then lifted the lens back up again it had gone. So frustrating. Im going to try and use your technique and see how I get on. BTW I tried again another afternoon using the 100L macro instead and it was a bit better. I'm thinking this might be because its a F2.8 lens and allows more light in. Good tip about the prefocus button on the longer lens - its a feature I have not used so far.

Yeah, it can still be really be frustrating sometimes 🙁 I hope it helps, most of the times I just manually adjust the focus

Thanks for confirming it's not just me. Crazy that Canon didn't have a close focus switch on the 100-500, instead of the 3M to infinity.

On my 600RF lens (or any other super telephoto) I just set the focus range on the camera so it is limited to 4.2m to 16 m so it can't run way out to infinity. Since most of the birds I am photographing are in that range it works pretty well. If it goes out to the furthest end of the range it isn't that hard to get it back. If you are doing a set up perch, then setting the pre-focus on that perch makes perfect sense, but I rarely have that opportunity out in the wild.
@FabianFoppNaturephotography
@FabianFoppNaturephotography 4 месяца назад
I had it sometimes that then suddenly an egret or heron showed up and I forgot or was not quick enough with deactivating the focus limiter. Therefore, I use it very carefully
@garyrobinette351
@garyrobinette351 4 месяца назад
@@FabianFoppNaturephotography There is always that possibility, but generally when I am shooting I am focused on what I am focused on and not worrying about another bird so it works for me.

All manufacturers have the problem to a certain degree. But maybe quad pixel af will fix it
@hpeterh

This is CDAF focus behavior. An Olympus camera with crosstype sensor PDAF will prefer the foreground object in this situation. It has other problems, though.
@FabianFoppNaturephotography
@FabianFoppNaturephotography 2 года назад
Thanks for the explanation! I still hope Canon will introduce crosstype sensors (quad-pixel AF?) in the R1

Not all mirrorless cameras have this problem. The Lumix S5 II has the far/near focus features, which help solve this problem.

Isn’t this just a focus limiter?

It drives me crazy when I track a bird flying against the sky and suddenly start to lose focus.
@FabianFoppNaturephotography

Yep, I can totally relate to that one
@Jessehermansonphotography
@Jessehermansonphotography 2 года назад
Yep, mirrorless does not seem to do this as well as the D500, D850, etc. group AF in those has been the most insane AF, for stickiness, I have ever used. I owned the Sony A9, A7r3, R6 and R5. I don’t shoot a lot of BIF but my keepers on mirrorless… in this scenario only, are waaaay down.

This happens to me a lot, especially with the tracking of birds, it doesn’t focus on the eyes and doesn’t follow them, I use my rf100-500 lens and it’s a little frustrating.

You mention dragging the focus back to the foreground via the manual focus ring. On my R5 this works with my older EF lens but not the RF ones. In continuous focus SERVO mode there does not seem possible to instantly switch to manual AF simply by dragging the focus ring. Do you know if this is possible? For now, until I know how to do instant manual focus override with RF glass in continuous SERVO mode I have customised a button to switch to MF so I can pull focus towards the foreground, then when focus close enough you can let go of the button so the AF snaps in the rest of the way
@FabianFoppNaturephotography
@FabianFoppNaturephotography 2 года назад
Yes, I think it’s called „always electronic MF“ and can be found in one of the AF tabs in the menu. Let me know if you found the setting 😊 This works with AI Servo, but my camera is only focussing when I press the shutter or AF-On button, not continuously all the time
@jeffreybevan

@@FabianFoppNaturephotography I don't have it, but I think it may be on a firmware update... a few minutes later. I have done the firmware update (I must do this more often - I was a bit nervous of it breaking my camera!). Setting 'AF > 5 > Electronic full-time MF > ON' allows me to grab the focus ring to manually focus - but only in one-shot mode. It does not appear to work in Servo mode like it does with the 'old' mechanical focus rings on EF lens. After a bit more digging it seems that it does work in Servo mode but only for certain RF lenses. But, it seems Canon has not published a list of those lenses. However, if you switch from front button focusing which I normally use (is that what you were calling 'continuously all the time'?) to back button focusing then it works using all RF lenses. Could be a good reason to make the switch? For something that should be simple, I think Canon have managed to do a very confusing job here.
@FabianFoppNaturephotography
@FabianFoppNaturephotography 2 года назад
Yes, a year ago I was also frustrated since it was not there. Suddenly Canon released a new firmware and problem solved (at least for this lens). For others back-button AF might indeed be the best option

I was photographing Meadow Larks on fences out on the prairie yesterday. I missed many shots due to the R5 with the RF 100-500 lens not focusing. It would sometimes and other times it would just not focus. So disappointed. I am almost ready to sell my RF gear and go back to my Nikon DSLR system.

The title is a bit misleading, this is a mirrorless problem for all brands, not just Canon R5. Sony A1, A9, Nikon Z9, Canon R5, R6, R7 to name a few, all can suffer from the same problem.
@FabianFoppNaturephotography
@FabianFoppNaturephotography 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment. I was mentioning in the video that it’s affecting all mirrorless cameras, but you are right: I could have put that in the title as well. The sony A1 got way better with a firmware update though and I hear that the R3 is also better in that point than the R5 - so there is hope 😊

My Olympus is better than my R5 in this regard. The R5 improved vastly I think, with a firmware update. It isn’t something many people seem to talk about. I thought perhaps it was just my camera.
