Its worth noting that the latest firmware update for the R5 did an AMAZING job on fixing overheat. Since I got that version, I had zero overheats. And I use 4k60 and 4khq a lot. Even 4k120 (which always overheated quickest) practicaly doesnt overheat at all in my work. :-)
Nice breakdown! These are the exact 2 cameras I use. They work together greatly. The R5 for photography jobs. It's an incredible stills camera. The C70 as my A camera for videography gigs and the R5 as the B camera.
Parker is a RU-vidr who gives quality content, gets straight to point, Information/unit time is toooo much, very detailed, a novice also understands everything. Parker you just got yourself a fan..!
I love your comparisons... seriously what got me to start following your work and what led to me buying FTF, which has completely changed my life. Thanks Parker!
I'm still shooting with an sl2 for my A-cam. 4 years of photos and 2 with video for that entry-level camera. But I'm upgrading everything and will probably go with the C70 for A and R5c as a B-cam. I've been waiting so long for the release of the R7 but who knows when that will announce and ship. Thanks for the review.
Glad to see such realistic evaluations by using real footage and usage. Most reviewers don't actually use the cameras in situations making comparisons rather weak. I feel confident in knowing what gear is capable of from your videos.
Great video as always. Just an FYI, you can assign a custom button on the C70 to capture an image, so technically, you can take pictures with the C70 (note: It is however a 'frame-grab' from the video, so the R5 still rightly wins that category).
Trust me I was in your spot get a small mirrorless camera my favourite option is the lumix g7 coming in at 400 bucks it’s still a lot of money but comparing the price to a phone it’s awesome. It’s not complicated at all just watch a couple of RU-vid vids on how to use the camera and that’s it , good luck 😊
@@proshooters1 I already have a lumix lx10 but don’t know how to operate it. The last time I tried following a RU-vid tutorial, I ended up disorganizing the settings, I had to set it back to default. I never handle a digital camera until 6months when I bought the lx10. I so badly want to learn photography and videography but the pain of operating a digital camera is discouraging. 😞
@@AijayKay to be honest you real need to learn the basics of film and photography before going in and buying a camera but you really need to learn like shutter speed aperture there is a lot of Different things to learn but I would say just take your camera put it in auto so the camera does all the work for you like a phone and then just take photos and videos just for fun practice with framing the best RU-vidr Ik is d4darious he is an amazing filmmaker and he goes through everything you need to know small steps and you will get there good luck 👍
I keep seeing people say the R5 footage is hard to edit. I have had ZERO issues with R5 video in Davinci Resolve. Maybe this is just a software issue on Adobe's side.
Thank you - very helpful. Tough call but I went with the C70 and use an EOS R for stills (& backup). The ability to edit 4K XFAVC easily on a MacBook Pro in my hotel room was a big factor.
I have both. The AF on the R5 is very fast and accurate. But C70 is very beautiful. And the dynamic range seems to be wide. But C70 is heavy. advantages and disadvantages.
You should put the speedbooster on the R5 and shoot in crop mode, then you'll get oversampled footage very similar to the 4KHQ and almost the same field of view - and no overheating at all.
Wow, Parker, great review! I'm not even interested in the C70, and I have an R5, but I liked this video anyway for the in-depth info you touched on. A lot of it reaffirms what I love about my R5. The overheating issue goes away when recording on the R5 with a Ninja V, so that's not an issue any more in my opinion. The codec is easier to edit with Ninja V files until you get into 8K, which no one really uses much anyway, so again a non-issue of sorts. The CFX card I bought was $400, so that's certainly a consideration, but I shoot mostly photos with a bit less in video, and the CFX card gives me easy control of buffer maxing, but I guess that's not really an issue here because the C70 isn't a photo camera. But it does have to be said that the R5 will shoot for a LONG time recording with the Ninja V without ANY overheating issues, so that point may actually be a wash. I see this as a 10-9 win for the R5. I'll take that! PLUS, the R5 shooting 4K HQ can be considered a win because recording on the Ninja V doesn't overheat, so that one's either a wash or an R5 win. AND I saved about a third of the price of the C70 on my R5 (not "half") and all my moving bird photos or moving subject photos come out at 80-90% good in the worst conditions, even with a 60-600mm Sigma zoom, which is insane. So, in answer to your question, the R5 definitely hits the most marks for me. Thanks for the deep dive on this review!
Great video! I’m looking forward to your thoughts and review on the CANON EOS R5C. Is the R5C the perfect happy-medium?? Before I buy it for my #1 camera I’d like to see your review. How it performs in the editing room, the pros and cons regarding overheating and file sizes and color correcting in post when using clog or not. The overall workflow is so important and YOU are the best person to think with this. Please make the R5C video soon!!!!
So I'd probably go for the C70 because I actually love Super35 sensors, no really I do. However I'm probably going to stick with my A7Siii over both, just because I never really developed my EF glass too deep and there's just so many ways the A7Siii smokes both of these cameras from low light to codec.
Your last point is incorrect. You absolutely can take stills with the C70. I even set one of my quick buttons (the one next to the record button up top) as my photo button in case I want a still as a thumbnail. Will it be as good a the R5 still? No... does that matter for thumbnails? Hell no. I wouldn’t hold that agains the C70 and would have called that a draw. Otherwise, great video. Also, I love the video of the kids painting. Looks so good!
What happens when recording ProRes Raw on a R5 or R5 C? ProRes Raw is Clog2 with cinema gammut. So it will have the same color issues because it's cinema gammut color space in prores raw? Thank you.
if tilta or canon could offer a service to install that heat sink in the back the r5 would be great for compact raw video/ (like from that one guy who watercooled the r5 and discovered you actually just need a little bit of metal to fix overheating)
Parker, what camera would you pick to pair with the R5 for an A & B combo? The R5 has been my daily driver since its release and hasn’t disappointed! I retired my 1DXII for it, and it some instances still pair the 2 together... but for video.. the recording limit & overheating really concerned me. I ended up investing in a BMPC6K (low cost, 6k, EF mount), but am curious your thoughts.
I really like ur Videos👐🏼 always pro... but! Just a Notice! The Fx sound [is a tad high.- i notice them a lot... and also! I thought u was gonna make them stereo like./ pan to left when something flying to left or right .- vice versa...
So question with the codex files: why don’t you use an external recorder that records to a ssd that can automatically write better editing codec? Super sick video though dude
Does someone knows where he bought his cap? And I believe the R5 is a better option, but in the end its not the tools what makes you great, it's the art you make
Great comparison, but I slightly disagree about c70 build quality. My screen creaked and wobbled and failed after a short while. R5 feels like it’s made by a totally different company by comparison…in a good way.
The R6 is better in low light than both of these. Too bad you can't program video settings to C1 C2 C3 or it would be the perfect camera for me as a hybrid shooter.
This comparison makes no sense, if you compare a passenger car with a truck, the R5 is not suitable for filming because it overheats and there are no ND filters. I was most amused when you gave the r5 point because the c70 cannot take pictures.
Hello, review on the cheapest camera pls?4000d, 3000d T100 I'm not a hobbiest, I really just don't have the money, 10 dollars we last me a month of food here. I know you probably don't want to do this review because you make vids on more higher end stuff, but most of us want this❤️❤️❤️
Quality content, No time wasting straight into the point, Thank you for this amazing content Also would love to see a Canon C70 vs BMPCC 6K or 6K pro when it comes out with Landon
Great video! I've had the R5 for about 4 months now and have been very curious about the C70. I agree with the solution to use both instead of choosing one over the other. They both have amazing attributes.
An R5c with better cooling, without time limit, dual card recording and full size HDMI would be the sweet spot for many I guess. I personally also hope for it to hit the market (as I have already lenses lying around for the RF mount ^^). Though: Could be a "no go" for Canon to protect the bigger cameras in the cinema lineup. The hardware would be capable of doing it. If necessary, they could even remove the internal sensor stabilisation (to keep the sensor cooler). Wouldn´t be that of a big deal with such a small camera (basically every standard gimbal supports the R5 size and weight).
