Watched several R5C camera rig videos. I decided to go with your setup choices because it comes from experience on location. Your detailing and explanation was informative, interesting, and succinct. Thanks!
Boom. Ordered this entire setup for my new R5C. Compact setup, quick setup and tear down. So tired of overthinking a rig and overcomplicating things.. This rig has everything you need! Solid build video man. Subbed and would be dope to collab one day!
nice! I did make one change though to the setup and added a quick-release plate for the battery.. Might do an upgraded version of it And sure, where are you based?
Nice setup! We rigged out a R5C with a Anton/Bauer 68Wh Titon Base Battery. It last about 4 hours and works good most of the time. You just need to watch the battery life. If it gets below 5% it will corrupt footage, so you need to make sure you change it out around 10% battery life.
I loved how you started with YOUR goals and then went into how you solved that. Few of us have the exact same goals so it makes more sense to understand the WHY. Great job! I have a similar R5C setup, same cage, same mic, same Meike VND adapter, quick detachable rails on the bottom, quick detachable top handle and monitor. But for my goals, I’m using USB PD power, which can easily be mounted on my rails or on my hip/belt or in a pocket.
I am using this rig, with small modifications (I have a side handle) and I use a screw on VND. Thanks for the walk through, it really helped (and now I have too many FXLion Nanos)
Kolari make magnetic Clip-in filters for the RF mount, that go in front of your sensor and behind your lens. They even have mist filters. Might be worth your while.
Thanks for making this, very concise. Personally, I would lose the gimble and opt for the Easyrig minimax that way nothing changes when you switch over.
Meike also do a drop in Black pro mist filter, if you're using the mattbox varind then you could use the drop in promist which would be a bit easier than the rectangular promist.
This looks like a great set up, thanks for the excellent review. Are you at all worried about shorting out the HDMI port by using one power source for camera and monitor? I'm not sure if having a battery in the camera stops this from being a problem, but I see lots of people have at some time had this happen when using one power source for camera and monitor. There are conflicting recommended processes for avoiding it too. ARRI say turn the power source on, then connect HDMI/SDI. Then disconnect the cables before turning off power. From what I can see, Alvin's cables says the opposite!
You never plugged in the microphone. Do you plug that into the camera mic port or in the monitor/recorder? I know you were just using the monitor, but if we are using the Ninja V as a recorder, would the mic be best into the Ninja or the camera? Thanks - great vid!
Fun to see this one, because I found you originally when trying to figure out how to use my R5 for video, and lots of this seems still applicable. When you went C70, it left me in the dust. Curious about your thoughts on adding the Ninja V+ to the R5, in order to solve the raw overheating.... and that also adds apple pro res and power advantages. What other significant drawbacks? Thanks!
I think I already made a video on why I am personally not a huge fan of the ninja solutions. Prores is too big, monitor not bright enough, micro hdmi sucks and it eats batteries like crazy. But it could be great for lots of situations
@@damiencooper .... I looked at your vid list and searched youtube for monkeypixels and Ninja, but nada. I watched your Feelworld Lut6s but no mention relative to Ninja v+ Can you point me to the vid? Are Canon raw files smaller than Apple ProRes?
I found a budget way, I use the smallrig matte box and a simtray with the screw on vnd filter and just pull out the simtray in and out. Great content and I enjoy all of your videos.
@@damiencooper Yes, you throw it in the filter tray and you turn it from the front and you can quickly remove it without unscrewing it on and off. It was my budget solution since I already had the screw on vnd and wanted the ability to do a quick swap in and out. Of course I’m just a hobbyist, may not translate as well in a pro work flow. Thanks for your time.
@@damiencooper Do not get this, the nisi true color vnd is a millimeter or two thicker so you won’t be able to remove the tray with it on the smallrig matte box. No issues for the Peter Polar Pro Vnd or freewell
HELLO!...I'm curious. Does the battery indicator on the R5C show the actual battery life in minutes or does it show something more like 28 min? I'm using an NP-F with a Small Rig battery plate with a dummy battery cable and it never shows the actual battery time. Plus the camera will not turn back on after turning off...I have to re-power the battery plate. Would appreciate your thoughts...or experience with your battery.
im. a noob with videography and when i demoed the r5c in store i thought the video menus were a bit overwhelming for me. would i get away with the r5 for video? i m obviously concerned with the r5 overheating. i plan on shooting 4k at most
I know I am always going on about this but why does SmallRig and other cage manufacturers not listen about the filter. Here you are giving them a big plug and they still do not design the cage so the filters will go in and out without removing the lens.So frustrating as I love SmallRig but none of their cages worked with my R6 with filter so I sent them all back. The really stupid thing is it would not take much to change it.
I think it would severly compromise the integrity of the cage though. You can't move it back because it's in the way of the cable. You can't leave it out for stability and moving it forward would also make it less stable and would probably get in the way of zooming
@@damiencooper Not sure what it is like on the R5C cage but certainly on both the cages for the R5 & R6 it only needed a millimetre or two off for the filter to come out. I did eventually find a cage that would do OK after also trying a number of others. The cage I have works fine but I had to import it directly from China.
Damien, I was looking on smallrig for the attachment you mentioned for the strap hole that locks in the top of the camera and I can not find it. Any chance you can toss me the item number, or was it part of the new mamba kit?
I’ve done this for a long time, and your videos are excellent. Tired of the stupid first time bloggers who know nothing-yours come from experience. Two questions. Why not use the Tascam XLR device made for the R5C, and if so, would it work with this rig? Also, have you found the usb-c cables don’t need support like the micro hdmi-are they that much stronger?
Thanks! They also need support and the cage does provide a cable protection for both. The XLR Device wouldn’t work with a top handle. So no, it wouldn’t work with this unfortunately
Can you not damage the ports by having the monitor and camera powered by a single v mount battery? I broke my HDMI port on my BMPCC4K due to that reason, does this not apply for Canon cameras?
Thank you for making this video! In the ND filters section you discuss three different options but you didn't tell us what option you choose to use. Would you tell us which of those three or another that you chose?
Have you tried any of the V-Mounts that have the DTAPs and USB ports built into the mount? I would think one of these would be better because you would not need to unplug the cables when you change batteries and this would allow you to use different V-mount batteries.
Very helpful. I have a big learning curve coming from just the EOS R. Mainly shooting weddings and I started to wonder if I purchased the wrong camera because I just couldn’t find the quick rig to gimbal options like you showcased. Question tho? For someone like me who does have the RS2, but not the full set up, just the gimbal itself, I heard the gimbal can also power the camera, do you know if that’s true and how much the battery life on the gimbal could be impacted?
Well for me I am using R5 with Rs2 Pro Combo. It definitely doesn't power my R5, but the 3 usb c ports on the Rs2 each have different outputs. Bottom one seems to have the highest output draw as it can power my mars400s Pro Transmitter via usb c. Middle goes to control the focus wheel and top one is weakest, it's used to connect direct to cameras for shutter control or camera control really.
I see you use EF lenses a lot. One thing puzzles me. My R5C will not use auto-iris on any of my EF lenses. But it will react to the 'force auto-iris' button. So obviously the hardware can do it. Is this the same with you? (I use auto Iris on stand-alone camera's filming theater) It's driving me nuts.
I have a question about audio. When using the rode mic, do you link channels 1and 2 or do you unlink them? I'm having a hard time figuring out the best audio settings for vlogging. Thanks for the video, definitely goals.
@@damiencooper Great! I need to try that, so is one channel from the internal mic and second channel from the external (Rode) mic. Thanks once again!!😄
@@leobardobivianomedia no. Both are the same rode mic. One is the level you actually want to record and change it via the microphone. The other is also the rode just way lower. When someone then starts laughing really loudly, channel one will clip but channel two will have perfect audio
18:20 - I had that same micro HDMI Cable from atomos for my R6... And it broke within a day. Micro HDMI sucks. No other way around it unfortunately with the R5, R5C, and R6.
@@randomrazr I'd prefer the R5C for its added cinema features but honestly I wouldn't buy it because I don't really want to deal with the file sizes from that 8K footage. I'd personally put my money towards either the C70 or R3, leaning more so towards the R3 because of its 6K Raw capabilities which I think would be a nice in between from 4K and 8K, and it's also a great stills camera and I still do a lot of hybrid work so that's probably where I'd max out for that.
@@RoccoGermani i had the r5c for a few days but it had a dead pixel so exchanging it. im second guessing because i dont like how it takes 8 seconds between switching from video to photo mode or vise versa. so if im taking both at a wedding and want to switch, 8 seconds is a long time that i could miss a good capture / moment. the only other couple things i found was the battery life on the internal battery is extremely short (coing from a EOS R) and the cinema menu was quite overwhelming for a novice videographer as i never expeirenced the cinema canon line up before until now. Im thinking of exchanging it for a R5, jsut worried that the 4k recording might overheat it .think its worth the trade off going tot he R5 o r should i jsut learn to use the r5c lol
@@randomrazr I'd keep the R5C because overall it is the better camera. I would take some time to familiarize yourself with the new menu system and testing it, because overall it is much better than the standard Canon menu system found on the R5. If you're shooting 8K raw video you can always pull 12 bit raw stills from the video, so that might be useful for you.
So does the V-Mount battery solution you have here power the camera and the lens control even up to 8K 60p? Because I thought that the only way to power the camera and lens in 8K 60p was with a PD power bank. Love these videos because you always walk through your reasons for the accessories that you have and show how each accessory works for the type of shooting environments you are in!😃 Keep up the great work!
You need an usb power source that has the 9V 3A PD Power profile to enable 8k60 with lens control. Not all PD power banks/USB-C V-Mount batteries have that, so keep an eye on it when shopping.
I have the same rig for my R5c, just with the atomos Ninja V as monitor, but also find myself going to my C70 😅 I so wanted to get the kipper tie ND solution REVOLVA for my R5c…. Just to find out that i doesent work with anything else than the komodo… sucks. Im just going to go with the overpriced Canon ND adaptor and just keep using my EF glas that I use for the c70 + speedbooster 😅😔
@@damiencooper yeah, I have heard that it has les of the X shaped crosshatching artifacts. Maybe ill try that one instead. Also I dont get that they made it so that you dont get a “empty” glas filter for not messing up the backfocus.. I dont get that no one have made a smarter “build in” ND solution yet. The C70 is just making my life easier in that regard.
Can you control shutterspeed, iso and aperture with the rs2 in VIDEO mode? And more important, can you trigger focus with the rs2 in VIDEO mode? (My R5 C crashes when I want to control it with my Zhiyun Crane 3 Lab)
Thanks for this great video! Its pretty cool to see your ideas to creeate a nice work flow with the R5c! How much PD-Power do the R5c need? I would buy a Swit MINO-S140 V-Mount battery. Should this one work too?
