Canon R6 ii vs Sony A7 IV - Which One Should You Buy? 

I posted a message yesterday, but it's gone. Great overall comparison. Just one thing: the R7 got the same 'new' way to do custom white balance as the R3, so I'm sure the R6 Mk II would be the same. With the camera in custom white balance (where you choose auto, daylight, shade etc.) you simply press the trash can button and take a shot of a grey card. Done! It's now set as the custom white balance.

Lens option is the deciding factor. Since I film with 3+ Sony bodies and 6+ third-party lenses* on a wedding day, if I had to use all first-party lenses, I would need to spend extra $6k+ to get the same coverage, not to mention the weight increase (especially for RF lenses). *Tamron 17-28, 35-150, 70-180, Sigma 24-70, 85, Samyang 24, 50

I think you did a very fair comparison. On the manual focusing... Focus mapping is pretty good but I still think Canon's Focus Guide system is better. I too think focus peaking is too hard to tell if you have the right thing in focus.

I own a Sony A7M4 and an old canon 5DM3. Although Sony is much better than my 10 years old Canon in many ways, man, I love the color right out from the Conan camera for portraits. This saved me a ton of time in post processing. I tried many ways but still cannot reproduce the canon color profile on my Sony. Higher dynamic range on my Sony doesn't matter for 99% of cases if photos were exposed correctly. I am also very very disappointed on the Sony screen. How can it be that much worse than a 10-year old DSLR??? But I love my Sony because of my super cool do-everything Temron 35-150 F2-2.8 lens :)

I've shot Nikon, Canon, & Sony as my current setup. I have obtained excellent results from all three brands over the years. Each one had its own positives & negatives but if you learn your system of choice you will get great results. I prefer to think of myself as the reason for the results I get good or bad. I am still unsure why Canon won't allow third party lenses to autofocus. Crazy.

I’ve used the Sony A7 IV a lot. It seems to stop recording when in 60 fps while sending a signal out over HDMI at the same time. As long as I don’t use the phone app, it seems like 24p and 30p doesn’t quit while sending a signal over HDMI simultaneously.

good video. glad i havent bought a full frame yet. im leaning 99% on the canon r6ii, due to 4k 60p uncropped! and im not buying overpriced rf lenses as theres thousands of ef lenses.

I'm just bought a 7 IV, couple of days ago, then banggg, Canon R6ii reviews all over, I have the 5DmkIII with 4-5 lenses for 10 years still going strong which is my main photo camera. Wanted to pût my feet in video world so I bought the Sony A7IV for now I only have 2 Tamron crop 2.8 lenses which are perfect (but cropped from ZV-E10) I still can return the Sony in favor of the Canon R62, life is difficult :)

Thank you for a very comprehensive review. I am point and shot guy using Sony RX100 v for the last few years, but low light performance is not that good. I want compact set up with small camera and lens. I was thinking about Canon R8 with 24mm f1.8 RF lens with IS. I do 50/50 stills and videos of family events for fun, and I am not sure about focus speed of that lens during making videos. Don't want to spend over 2K and end up with unhappy system, and will not purchase one kilo lens. Another option for me would be rumored Sony A7c ii, but I am not to crazy about Sony colors which improved lately from what I hear. I do videos with ninja walking without gimbal. I don't have a problem purchasing gimbal in the future for some main events, but not interested to carry it everywhere. If you could comment with some advice, I would appreciate it.

I've been on Sony a7iii for 1 1/2 years and now using the a7riii for about 1/2 year (I upgraded to the a7iv when it first came out and had major front focus issues). Now, I thinking of upgrading to the a7rv, but the Canon R6ii has me very interested as well.

Canon lens strategy is the only one that moves me more towards Sony. I am Canon M50 user and I love Canon ease of use but I don't plan to spend $$$ on big and expensive 🫰 Canon RF lenses!

Great video as always! I was looking for a Full-Frame camera and R6 mark II was on my list, but I ended up with choosing the Sony A7 IV. Reasons: - Price (body): Sony a7 IV 2391€ with 5 year guarantee. Canon R6 mark II 2990€ also 5 year guarantee - Lenses (the most important reason to me): WAY more choice if I go with Sony and for every budget and from many manufactures!

I am really torn between the R6ii M2 and the A7IV! After shooting film for the last 6 years, this would be my first full frame camera. Before start my film camera journey, I’d exhausted the crop-sensor Canon 500D! Haha I am defo 70/30 between photos and video - Mainly doing street photography and landscape photography. The only aspect that is pulling me away from the Sony is the 4k crop. Can you really achieve equally good results on the Sony compared to the Canon?? My gut is saying the Sony for some reason but the specs on the Canon are truely good!

You know we are getting waves or false color in the FX3x now for sure, even shutter angle. Lol. Actually your setup is a clue of why go for Sony.Your EVZ 10 works perfectly with you FX30 and A7IV and would work perfectly with the FX6/FX9. You can start small and cheap and move up without leaving anything behind. Same lenses, same profiles.

For a photographer that Panorama mode sure is interesting in the R6ll. Sports and wildlife and night time photographs. Don’t care about video!

To be fair, EF lenses are a viable option for video, since 3rd party lenses for Sony also don't have focus breathing compensation. There is even a variable ND filter adapter, which is somewhat less awkward than dealing with different filter sizes.

I chose the a7 iv only because of the tamron 35 105 2-2.8 lense.

Bought this camera as love the body. Plus I saved a lot of money on lenses as they don’t have many I want 😂

Dinamic Range:Canon EOS R6 II = 12. Sony A7IV = 15 stops.

In regards to tracking and AF, the R6 can definitely be updated via firmware for both limitless video and AF performance. They use the same processor, only the sensor is different and that doesn’t impact chip programming. But Canon might forgo updating the r6 to force mark 2 sales.

Right when I thought Canon FINALLY made the perfect camera for me they close off third party lenses. Damn you Canon. Think it's finally time to switch to Sony.

When I look at the sample footage from the Canon R6ii and even the R3(!), I see that hand held shots still have corner wobble. Since I shoot A LOT of hand held, that is a no go for me.

If you have only Sony ZV10E , you will upgrade to: Sony A7IV, Sony A7V, Sony A7RV or Sony7SIII? If camera it is used 90% filming 10% photo and you don't want to make a dramatic mistake in choosing the camera. Thanks

Excellent breakdown. Canon did an awful job of telling us the feature set of the R6 II. The R6 II does have a feature like clear image zoom. I have no idea whether it is any good though.

Best value is Lumix s5 only 1,500,image quality is king not autofocus, hdmi out Blackmagic raw prores raw 6k

I got tthe R6 gen1 (love it) Am more interested in what the hell they released a gen2 r6 so early on LOL Get those lenses f2.8 lenses out that don’t cost me my wife and kids! 😭 In all fairness if you have a R6 or even a A7 iv you honestly have no reason not to produce something specially with these weapons! Go out and enjoy em lol

I always use my auto white balance on my Nikon because I find it works. I have noticed Sony users doing custom white balance when Ive been working along side them. I often wondered if I should as well, but my AWB seems pretty reliable. Im just wondering if this something Nikon do well at. I have heard Tony Northrup mention that Nikon AWB and A-ISO being industry leading.

canon eos R does not auto espouse when you shoot log , that is breaking deal for me , how about the canon r6 ii ? and the sonys ? do they auto espouse when you shoot log?

I had the R6 for about a minute, and I returned it because of autofocus issues. The videos I've seen of the R6 ii have shown how that camera also has times when the AF drifts. When I had the A7iv the autofocus never drifted and was spot on every time. My experience with my FX30 is also consistent with reliable autofocus. So, if I had to choose, I would go back to the A7iv. Sorry, Canon. Oh, and did I mention the insanely expensive RF lenses for Canon? Buh-bye. P.S. I'm not a photographer, so I'm not interested in the R6 ii photo features.

Drives me nuts that Sony A74 cant custom white balance when using a C video mode. So stupid. Also you can not have delay video start like my R6. Also when you do interval shooting the focus is locked on the first image. With my R6 it re focuses on every image. Great with family photos. Set the camera on a mini tripod and shoot 10-20 photos seconds apart. Weird that Sony A74 cant do this. Been using Canon 20 years and Sony 6 years. Even though I owned the A7 series and also some R series and I would prefer Canon. But these are very little differences. Today most cameras are great.

Great Video, I think for Video is the a7IV still better because of the Downsampling from 7k to 4k and it hasn‘t any Overheating Problems :) I‘m really happy in the Sony System ✌🏻🙃

Canon is intentionally not including full HDMI and still uses the bad white balance method to differentiate it from their cinema line.

Other brand lens for less money in the Sony... :)
