I've had my R6 for about as long. I have big hands so I got the grip. Maybe with the extra batt you could take your R6 out of sleep mode and solve the waking up problem. The RF 100-500 lens is awesome. I shoot birds with it. I would imagine if you were using it with the sports it would blow your mind. Problem is, it's very pricey. I lucked out and got it on special at less than the original lower price. I can't praise it enough. Crystal clear. Thanks Rob, for the really excellent commentary on the R6. I couldn't agree more with everything you relayed.

Big fan of your channel! Especially due to the fact that you are talking from real world experience and not just some spec reading. Also, I like your frugal approach when it comes to buying equipment. I really think the R6 is a great camera, albeit it comes with some limitations. I personally am more video focused and therefore struggle with different problems (overheating, no clean HDMI out, no custom video modes), but I still think the R6 packs a great punch for its price.

Great video, thanks. I've been on the fence for the jump to mirrorless for a while. I'm a 7DII user and mainly do airshow / low level aircraft photography. I purchased an R6 last week. Got an EF 300 F4 with 1.4 x and it is just like I've purchased a new lens !! Going to try it in anger in a couple of weeks time once I've got used to the settings. But I took to the EVF straight away. Was going to wait and see what happened with any R7 but every R6 review I've watched gets past the "it's only 21Mp" in two seconds and goes on to say how good it is. So I'm happy with my purchase.

Thank you for the great video! The R6 is a camera I always recommend! A lot of camera for the money. In terms of personal preference, I do not like a flip out screen for a camera I use for sports. I much rather see a multidirectional tilt screen.

It's a fantastic camera for the money. I agree with your positive points. I also agree with you regarding lack of weather sealing and LAN port. One thing I'd add is the lack of voice memo capability. All these features are available in more expensive bodies and if someone truly NEEDS them they are likely making enough money with photography to justify the additional expense. The lack of these features should not discourage anyone for buying the R6.

Your jumping around when focusing during sport can be alleviated by adjusting the priority when new subjects enter the frame. A lot of the focus things you've mentioned can be compensated to what you are shooting, such as objects crossing in front of the frame, erratic movements etc.

In addition to backing up my R3, my R6 is my main 4k60 cam and is rigged up to a Ninja V and VMount power and is absolutely outstanding in this role. My R6 is great, when it works. I've had it since Nov 2021 and up until a couple of months ago, it was great, then I started having issues with it. In 2 previous occasions, it failed to power up all of a sudden. Trouble shot it with Canon on the phone and had to send it in twice. Canon repaired it under warranty, but just last weekend I had a power issue again. Waiting on the shipping label from Canon to send it in again. I guess I got a lemon, frustrating because I had to cancel or reschedule photo shoots, costing me money. I'm almost tempted to go back to my 1DX and forget about the mirrorless. I'm shooting MotoGP April 9-10, so hopefully I can get it back by then. I'll cross my fingers that I don't have any issues during the event.

Just one point Rob that the MKI's lenses like 400mm/70-200mm you don't get the full 12fps on the R6. One of the problems with the R6 and older Canon EF lenses. The grip with the LAN port works only on the R5 and it's £1000! I find the ftp function on the R6 excellent and more stable than the wireless transmitter on the 1Dx MKII.

20MP really starts to fall short once you get into the kind of photography where cropping is the standard. I used to do bird photography with a 26mp RP and I would find it lacking at times. I'd say the R5 has found the sweet spot megapixel-wise, but unfortunately that one is a bit too steeply priced for me.

The way things are today, the battery grip price won't be going lower any time soon. You may just have to bite the bullet. I know it's overpriced, but so are the cameras and lenses. I have to have the grips for the reason you stated, placement of my lower fingers and because I am so used to the grip coming from the 1Ds. What I won't do is spend $6-8k for a camera body. That ain't happening. To get around the slight delay on wakeup (@14:00) you can just tap any button on the camera, even the AF button as long as you don't hold on to it cause the AF to move, and it will be ready by the time you bring your eye up the camera. The motion becomes an unconscious movement after awhile.

EF-S lenses will vignette on the R6 unless you put it in APS-C mode (actually I think it does that automatically), which means you’re down to 8MP image size, and not getting the benefit of full frame. If you go for an R6 you really need to upgrade to full-frame lenses.

I’ve had mine for a similar length of time and my experience matches yours. My issues have been a) every so often, it will lock up completely, and the only way to re-activate it is to take the battery out and “re-boot” the camera. It’s happened maybe 10 times; very irritating when it does b) there seems to be an issue with the focussing on 3rd party lenses, specifically my Sigma 150-600C, where it will flutter/ bounce in and out of focus, so rather than a 90%+ hit rate with a Canon lens, you’re down at 50-60% hit rate. It’s mainly when the subject is small in the frame, and doesn’t happen if you’re close/ filling the frame with the subject. Overall I’m pleased with it, and I think for me the extra expense of the R5 wasn’t justified.

You are using a lower resolution body ( 20.1 MP vs 50.6 MP on the 5Dsr) with a very slow lens (most DSLRs wouldn’t even be able to autofocus at f11. If you used the R6 with the RF100-500mm f4.5-7.1 I doubt you would see such reduction in image quality. The affordable RF 600 f11 comes with a trade off: You can only get usable images in optimal lighting conditions.

I love my R6, I use it for sports shoots and music video shoots. I just really hate 2 things, first one is, when Im in manual mode and want to take videos, I have to switch all the way to video mode which is like 6 turns with the dial, I can record video in manual mode but then video is in auto exposure mode, and I don’t have access to my video settings like being able to switch to clog or turn in slow motion, but I can change video resolution in tab 9, and the second one is anti flicker, main video mode does not have anti flicker, manual mode does and I can shoot video in manual but like I said, controls for video in manual mode are nonexistent pretty much

Love the R6 Wondering hard about the 300mm 2.8 IS Mark 1. - heavy, old (not servicable?) brilliance at 1.2k second hand vs the mark 2 at £3k. Would the former cope with the AF demands of high speed well enough to start with ? Neither 300 or 400 2.8 mark 1 are listed as compatible for high speed by canon - but you had no issues?

I am also an R6 sports shooter mostly basketball and some outdoor track and field. Love the camera but have been seeing an issue with the last 3 firmware updates as I typically install the latest firmware within a couple weeks of it coming out. I’ve been tossing up between the R6 and R7 as a second body to my R5. On the up side the R6 has very similar controls to the R5, its full frame hence no issue with wide angle (I’m mainly a landscaper) but is is about 700 pounds more expensive than the R7 , on the other hand the R7 has that new position for the dial and the issues with wide angle. Would be really interested in your views on the R7 now its out and about.

Hello 🙂 Just came across this whilst scrolling.. I have an r6, just got it about a month ago. 1st pics I took turned out good, gotta lot of detail back in Lr, however, since those, I've noticed a lot of chromatic aberration-like coloring/noise in the fur of wildlife, when shooting through a window in the house (using ef lenses with adapter) & thought that was the problem.. The other day I was working ona video, took some random shots of my dogs for it; the pics were horribly noisy & chromatic when I viewed them on the computer. Iso was at 12800 (automatic) and that was using the kit 24-105 lens Can you tell me what could've happened since those 1st shots? Can't fathom what I did wrong.. Ps: the 1st shots were also with the same lens in low light Thanks in advance ☺

I'm actually seeing what kind of cash I can get for my ef 300 2.8, and considering selling some other stuff to get me in a position to get the R3. I don't think it's likely, but I'm still stuck on the R6 being 20MP, using different cards than I have now, and a little frustration with the shutter performance (compared to my 1Dx-II). I have heard that the IPB files from it are very tough to work with on the computer. I've heard that these files can be hard to deal with even with a high end computer. R5, well, it would be better depending on your idea of what a significant crop is, and what size do you print/publish your photos. Even then, the difference would be felt probably on a handful of shots while for the most part it wouldn't matter at all. With that said, I'd say there's a slight advantage to R6 in reduced storage you need for the files. :) And probably get more out of your battery as well.

My Sony A7iii, at my last Hawaii trip, slipped out of the hand while climbing to get photos of the waterfalls on the road to Hana.. about 20inches off the ground, it landed on the rear right left corner and shattered my lcd screen. My brother has a Sony body with a cracked lcd screen as well. I replaced it with the R6. Last weekend I went out to a Cove near my house to take photos of some pelicans; the R6 slipped out of the camera bag and landed on a boulder from waist high; not even a scratch. So through my clumsiness the answer is there from my personal outcome. Others may have different experiences. [ as of today my camera bodies are, R6, R5, R3, 80D, 1Diii, A7iv, A6300, Z6ii and still working 20D my first digital camera.] People don't realize that the flippy screen can be turned inwards to protect the very fragile glass panel of the lcd screen. I have seen "Zero" videos of people having the Canon flip screen ripped off or twisted off to date; that would be an interesting video and i would suspect it would be all over y ou t ube..... for me the real weak point is the exposed lcd screen during use or transit on any camera body.

@@41stclair i am clumsy, God help me. As such to the point of concern, no one should drop a camera whether in hand or from a bag, but when it consequently is dropped the heavier concern is that even a non hinged lcd screen will take damage as much as a hinged protruded lcd screen. Therefore an exposed lcd is no less a concern as you have questioned the "fall off" and as you may be more reliable to hold a camera body and/or a baby than me, gravity still is at work and my response was a true to life outcome of your initial question. Hi there, as an r5 user coming from the old 5D4 I can say in regard to the flip out screen that its a god send for anyone with bad knees and the EVF on the R5 is so good I find myself mostly with the screen folded in with the LCD facing the camera so if you are a little fumble fingered you might find that alone saves the screen in a fall, also it means my face /nose doesn’t leave smudges on the LCD. Sure, I agree you need to be careful when you have the screen folded out but on balance I find it heck of a useful, of course I’ve owned point and shoots with fold out screens at least a decade ago and I don’t know why full frames have been so late to the party . I finally rented an R6 after my 1 DX "died" to give it a test. My impression was quite simply.....this is one overrated camera when you compare it against a 1DX. The "facial focus" or whatever its called is a gimic in my opinion and if anything it caused more problems than not. I personally don't focus on faces I prefer to focus on the centre of the chest for sports photography. Here's why I will not buy an r6....cost is $3500 in Canada vs $1500 for a used 1DX with 100,000 shutter clicks. r6 shutter is good for 200,000 clicks 1 DX is 400,000 (my last one died at just over 1,000,000 shutter clicks!!). R6 battery life is 50% of the 1 DX. I'm in this business to make money and spending more than double for a camera that will last 50% as long makes no sense. The quality is at par with the 1 DX. If you feel you need the latest and greatest bodies then get the new Canon cameras but in my opinion why spend money needlessly and cut into your profit margin?
@TheGhostplanner
@TheGhostplanner 8 месяцев назад
The 1DX batteries hold 3150 mAh, the ones for the R6 2150. That’s not 50%, but may depend on your usage. The shutter of the R6 has a life expectancy of 300k, not 200. And the sensor of the R6 is one from a 1DX. Maybe you will reconsider, maybe not. Just wanted you to know.
