Thank you! That is by far the best R7 set-up guide I've seen! I will mostly use "manual shutter-speed and manual aperture" with "auto-ISO": Many years of experience photographing airshows and motor-sports informs me that primary control of the shutter speed is vital. But often easy control of of the aperture is also important. I care far less about detailed control of ISO. For information: the APSC kit lenses can also be used on Full Frame RF cameras. The cameras automatically drop into crop mode.

Very Good video. I am waiting on my R7 so it's good to get accustomed to the controls ahead of time. I would add that I use auto ISO a lot when shooting wildlife, especially birds. With changeable skies and birds going in and out of shadow, it's almost impossible for me to continue to adjust the ISO manually. This is also when I use TV the most. I lock it in at 1/2500 and go.

Thank you so much for providing this tutorial. I am coming from Canon T6 and T7i. Not new to Canon, however, I wanted information on proper usage of the buttons. Sometimes, I wing it to figure stuff out. I checked the Canon site and could not find this information via a digital manual. I sometimes go for months without using my Canon cameras, so I have to sort of relearn things. I am trying to make myself carry my equipment, to have it ready for use. In the interim, I do use an iPhone 12. This is a lot to absorb, so I know I will be going over the information a second or this time.

Their digital manual is nearly 1000 pages long. Im not sure how they can expect anyone to have the patience and time to read it all, but this is why I make these videos! Great video and very informative as I have recently purchased a R7. I shoot mainly commercial transport, buses, lorries, trains, etc sometimes moving vehicles sometimes stationery and at times both, what would you consider the best setting to use. On my DSLR I have usually used Tv as this gives me a photo fully in focus naturally depending on ISO and shutter setting.

Another great video, thanks Michael. When the sensor shutter in my R7 slides back, the sensor mechanism swings into place very forcefully, shaking slightly. When I moved from Nikon pro gear to Canon EOS R5 back in 2020 I got completely lost in the Canon menus and button setup to the point where I considered returning my EOS R5 and getting back to Nikon. Right in time, I found the fantastic "Canon R5 Tutorial & R6 Tutorial Training Overview - Free Users Guide" by Michael which led me to become a very happy Canon R5 user. Under while I added an R7 to my Canon gear and even before opening the box I watched this R7 instruction video & part 2 to refresh the potential of the R7. Highly recommended, even for professional users!

Longtime Canon user (35mm FT-QL SLR (since 1968!) -> Rebel XT -> XTi -> T4i -> 70D -> 80D -> R7 this week. The differences with the R7's control layout sent me here. The FT-QL was a lot smaller than any of my Canon DSLRs, but the R7 is so close to the FT-QL in size it feels like coming home. PS Unless you really don't mind waiting a long time for your R7, order it with the 18-150 kit lens, since there are lots of those available but hardly any "body only" boxes. I ordered just the body the day after the R7 was announced but eventually, when I saw the kit available but not the body I surrendered and changed my order to the kit - which was shipped to me the same day. I'm glad it worked out this way, since this kit lens is just as sharp as my EF-S 18-135 nano-USM and a lot more compact. (I'll keep the nano for use with its power zoom adapter for videos - I bought one on eBay recently, since it's long-discontinued.)

Pre-Ordered R7, In China, when something new comes out, you have to pay more than it's advertised to get it. Otherwise you'll have to wait, thats what I am doing now... Since I have Gopro to do the job. Anyway I downloaded manual from Canon USA so I can learn since I have never used Canon Camera - -... & Here comes this video. Great Video :)

I wouldn't call this made for beginners per se. I've gone from the 40D to the 7D to the 7D Mark II to now the R7 but am no expert by any means. It was very helpful for me to have my R7 in hand without even using it yet and going through each step in your Part I and II videos. A good refresher overall and great intro to the R7's layout and functionality. Well done!

When selecting AF area 1 the directional is only up/down - side to side. I press the cluster button and it allowed me to change the size but on a second try it did not change resize option?

So far it looks good when using eye detection. The tracking box, is kinda sluggish. I guess would depend on speed if you were using that.

Thank you for this very detailed and informative video! I've seen about half of the video and maybe it will be explained later. But I have a question regarding the icon with hand in brackets (IBIS?). There is "+" right beside the brackets. What does this mean and how can I activate/deactivate it? Is there a possibility to deactivate IBIS or are there any setting for it?

My understanding is Hand is the IS in the sensor, + means its working with IS in the lens. Easiest way to turn off both is if you have a lens switch that allows for it. I dont remember seeing a menu setting for it, so it might be a customizable type thing in the menu (through button customizations) Let me get back to you on this.

@@MMaven Not exactly but close ... it is a bit tricky. Yes, hand with + means optical stabilized lens and inbody IS are working together (perfectly) because the lens is an RF one. After testing different EF lenses (because I don't have any RF lenses) and reading the handbook I found out that hand (without +) can symbolize two(!) different conditions. 1. When using IS lenses that have(!) an IS switch hand (without +) means lens IS and inbody IS are working together. When you put the IS switch Off beside the hand Off will also appear and only inbody IS is working. "Note that the [IS mode] is not displayed when you are using IS lenses that have an IS switch." 2. When using IS lenses that do not(!) have an IS switch, set [IS mode] to [On]. [On] is activating the IS of the lens and therefore it is also working together with inbody IS which is also symbolized by hand (without +). Now comes the tricky part: The RF protocol(?) obviously can recognize lenses with IS switch (even Sigma and Tamron lenses) and therefore the [IS mode] is not displayed(!) in the menue. BUT the protocol obviously can't recognize if the lens is an IS lens or not if there isn't any switch. If I set [IS mode] to [On] the hand (without +) can symbolize two(!) different conditions. 1. If the lens is an IS lens (without switch!) hand (without +) means lens IS and inbody IS are working together. 2. If the lens is not an IS lens hand (without +) means only inbody IS is working. Maybe it is only me but having the same icon for two different conditions is a bit confusing ... I hope that made sense and my English was good enough to explain it properly!

I need to crop my photos at a certain spec size. Just shot my first R7 sports photos and cropping these photos are different. When I use the crop size I always use, it looks so small on my photo and seems very small on the crop? Why is the photo on the R7 so much larger making my crops smaller?

After adjusting the dials so that in the "M" mode they work the same as in the "Av" mode, to have the aperture under the index finger and the shutter speed under the thumb - during exposure bracketing (AEB) in manual mode (M), the camera takes subsequent photos by changing the aperture value instead of exposure time value, which causes the depth of field to change in subsequent photos. In this case, all the photos are useless and there is nothing you can do with them. What should I do to make the camera change the exposure time and not the aperture value during exposure bracketing in manual mode, so as to have different exposures with the same depth of field? I would like to mention that this problem does not occur in another Canon camera that I have, so it is probably a software error.

When I pushed the cluster button and try to change the focus areas using the dials , I can't change them. I need to push cluster button then push the multifunction button. Then only I can change the focus areas. Can you help me to identify the reason? Have I changed any setting wrongly? Please help.

There are many ways to change your clusters. This is just one way, the default way. You can also change on the Q screen. On the crash course I demonstrate my shortcut to do it even faster. Best wishes

@@AmilaWildlifephotography sounds like you are using the wrong dials. What you describe (pushing the cluster button) followed by the mfn button IS the correct default method. To be clear: it is not a firmware issue, though I suppose your camera might be broken, it’s unlikely. My guess is you are not using the correct selector wheels, but it’s impossible for me to know without being there unfortunately. Sorry about that. Best wishes!

Check your mode dial. It changes the menus that are available. Only PSAM have the full menus

a review of the dynamic range would definitely be interesting, as I couldn't find any yet on YT. From the 1st reviews I've seen, the ISO on this R7 are pretty well managed for an APSC but still interesting to test one more time also.

@@MMaven Thanks for answering me! and glad to hear that... actually I bought my rebel T6s after watching your epic shootout some years ago...😅 I think history may repeat once again but with another apsc body this time.
