Great review. I love my R8. Two firsts for me - my first full-frame camera and my first mirrorless camera. It pairs well with my new 200-800 lens for birds, although I'll have more opportunities to capture them in the Spring.
Recently sold my old Canon 60D and joined the Canon mirrorless user community with a Canon R8 purchase. Still learning as an amateur so thanks for the video. Before the 60D I had the old Canon AE1. Always amazed at the changes in camera technology.
I recently purchased a R8 after trading in my original 5D Mk1, 40D, and a couple of “L”lenses that I didn’t use much. I kept three. I also got the EF to RF adapter and I am please with the results of the 24-70 on the the R8. Much more testing needed using the 100-400 mk1 for wildlife photography. Thanks for review!
Thank you for this thorough and insightful review. I just sold my old R for $900 and purchased the R8 for $1299. This feels like a major upgrade. I shoot weddings and event with an R6 M2 and the OG R6. Actually use the R6 for most of my work with the 28-70mm. The R8 seems like an incredible value proposition as a second body.. I don’t like the battery size. Heck I started my journey shooting weddings with a RP. A single card slot and a pocket full of off band NC-17 batteries. The. M6M2 was my back up. Great content. I will be pairing the R8 with the 24 or 35mm as a second camera.
The battery life sucks but the batteries are so tiny it’s not a big deal. Usually. But you shoot weddings, and that would make it a huge deal. Thanks for the watch!
I recently moved to the R8 from a 5D Mark III which I'd used since 2012 (and other Canon film/digital SLRs dating back to the mid-90s). The change was prompted by the loss of my 24-70mm F2.8L lens (error 01) and a pet dog that moves so fast and erratically that the 5D's AF couldn't keep up. And wow, things have changed a bit. I always felt like I was the photographer in control of my gear, but now with this new camera, I feel like it's doing the driving and I'm just going along for the ride, ha ha ha. It's basically a computer with a lens attached now. For roughly the same money I spent on *just* the 5D III body back in 2012, I got the R8, 50mm 1.8, 24-50mm kit lens, and the RF 24-105mm F4L. Wow!
Changed my R10(with kit lens) to R8 with an RF 35mm f1.8. I absolutely love the change. I feared it will not a significant upgrade but i totally falled in love @ R8. I loved the R10, great picture quality @ daylight, but i wanted uncropped 4k/60fps video and better night pictures / videos. Exactly i got what i wanted. Anyone want to buy this i totally recommend, but with minimum +1 but i prefer +2 more LP-E17 accu for it, becouse thats this cameras weakest point, if you travel and shoot / video all day you will need 3 or maybe 4 LP-E17 totally, but i recommend this camera for travel becouse of it's size and its moderated price, it's little and great :)
This camera has quickly become my favorite video camera, despite not having IBIS. I just make sure to pair it up with an image stabilized lens and I'm good to go.
I've been using a T7 for nearly three years now. Shot a wedding with it. Been on all kinds of adventures. But picking up this R8 is an absolute game changer. I feel downright spoiled with this tech. Great overview man. Exactly what I was looking for.
Great review Kevin. I shoot wedding photos. I replaced my RP with the R8. The R8 has the same body and uses the same battery as the old RP, so I went from a camera that I hated (RP) to one that I like as a second camera body to my R5. I will typically use my RF 28-70 on the R5 and put my longer lens on the R8, sometimes my wide lens for establishing shots. When the reception dancing photos start I’ll use my R8. The lower megapixels and better low light performance are perfect for dancing photos. They’re important but not mission critical so the single sd. card slot does not make fearful of not having a se ind card slot.
I have the original Canon 5D, now around 19 years old! I was shocked to see that my collection of EF lenses will not fit on Canon's new RF mount cameras, but thanks to RF to EF converters, that's less of an issue. I simply can't afford to replace all my EF lenses with RF equivalents, so I will probably pull the trigger on the R8 now and get a converter. Thanks for the great review which has solidified my decision to get the R8 over the more expensive options that I really can't afford right now.
Happy to help! You're going to LOVE the autofocus of the R8 jumping over from an original 5D! The older EF glass performs very well on the newer bodies converted, so nothing to worry about there. The RF glass is definitely better-looking than the EF glass, especially if you zoom in. But when you view images at the normal viewing distance, the differences are harder to tell. It's also even less noticeable on their lower megapixel cameras like the R8, so you're good to go. The main reason the differences are more noticeable on higher megapixel cameras like the R5 is because the EF glass was never designed or optimized to be used on higher megapixel cameras. So many EF lenses don't resolve as well on the higher megapixel cameras. Thanks for stopping by!
Canon were killing it with their APSC R bodies and then the R6ii and this R8. Let’s see what they have cooked up this year. I’d love to pick up an R3 / R6ii to pair with the R7. Not sure why RU-vid didn’t notify me but great content!
Not sure why they didn't notify you, but I appreciate that you have notifications turned on for my channel. I have a feeling there are going to be big announcements this month. What? I have no idea. I'm hoping it's a new R5.
I bought the R8 for my daughter as a gift. She’ll be opening it up in a week. I knew the “cons” going in but it’s full frame and on sale too at 1199 :)
I recently bought the R8, coming from the RP and I was blown away by the RAW burst feature! But I'm more excited about the 10bit 4:2:2 uncropped 4k video capabilities! Planning to make more short films with this beauty!
I cannot stress how great the video quality is on this camera. I'm getting an R5MKII this week and actually plan to use my R8 more for video duties just because I love the way it looks so much.
Yes, It's at the top of my list. Kinda waiting for the Z6iii but I'm heading to Alaska this spring. Thanks for putting Gabby in the mix. Wow! what an amazing model.
I just bought the R8. My usual subjects are sports BUT I have gotten tired of my crop sensor and i want to photograph my kids more. Got one brand new for 1299 and an open box RF 70-200 2.8 for 2100. Both from crutchfield, so im super excited for later this year. Prior camera was a 7D mk1. So...just a small jump. Note about the electronic shutter: all of the tests and images i saw, the image loss going to that was minimal at best.
This is my planned upgrade camera! My camera is old and I have outgrown it.. EOS 450D Xsi. Flashback from 2008 😂. Can't wait to upgrade to this great camera. Just trying to decide if I should add a higher quality lens to my kit first.
My answer is always “yes” to new lenses. The older EF glasses look amazing on the newer cameras. The new RF glass takes advantage of the resolution of the newer sensors.
Thanks for this review! You put some concerns I had in good light. The battery is the major issue I have. It could be useful for me in several ways, as I could keep in my car as a wildlife camera with the 800f11. I already have an r5 and an r7, so I probably won’t get this unless I can get it for a steal type price. Now, though, I feel better about recommending it to people who need an inexpensive body to get into photography with, and Canon did an excellent job with this as an entry level full frame body! My first full frame was an EOS 6D and the r8 just blows it completely out of the water! Wow. Thanks.
Having a different model battery was less of a big deal than I thought it would be. But I definitely erred to air out the facts because it would be a dealbreaker for some. Thanks for watch!
Fantastic video 🤩 the Canon R8 is PHENOMENAL 📸😍 what lens did you use for the photos with the model the night with the beautiful bokeh behind him at high iso ?
I have R50 R10 & R8 I had the R7 sold it too much noise with the sensor in my opinion and don't need a sports camera any more. The R8 files remind me of the R6 original and 1D Mk iii, hard to put my finger on it but all these sensors produced a certain look that i like so the R8 is may favourite camera at the moment and the fact that it has the R6 Mkii sensor is a big plus.
As much as I love my R5, the R8 is a better walk around camera. So much lighter. And yes, the sensor (to me) makes this camera worth the price. I have the R50 as well. Hope to have that review out before the end of the year.
Do you think would be worth switching from a R50 to and R10 for just a free hundred bucks to pay for it? I love my R50 but after I pushed myself hard I realised that the grip on the R50 is not great for my hand as I thought during the first months I’ve used it. R10 looks like having a better grip handle which I wasn’t able to try at the time.
Hey Kevin! Great review on the camera, I'm loving everything about my R8 except for the lackluster battery life. I was wondering, what is the equipment you were using for flash photography when you were shooting the model in low light? Thanks!
I agree about the battery life. At least the batteries are tiny, not too expensive and fit in your pocket. To your question. Those are Stella Pro Reflex lights. They are fairly niche, in that you would only use them at dusk or at night. They are not as powerful as traditional strobes. In the video, I was testing those out to see if I wanted to purchase a couple. I did end up purchasing them. Should have them arrive in a couple weeks and I will absolutely do a review on them.
I just got the r8 2 days ago and didn’t like there’s no dedicated iso button and then realized it’s on the touch screen. Really like the jpegs it produces too.
You can lock the shutter down for lens changes by manually initiating sensor cleaning mode and turning the camera off. You could wait til the first click, but you probably don't have to.
@@KevinDeal yeah, may not be the something to recommend to do all of the time. But if it's critical, at least it's an option. I've never had a real need to do it, but the handful of times I've done it on my RP and R8, it didn't seem to cause any apparent issues.
Great review. I upgraded from an RP about a month ago and was surprised on how much better the R8 was. It gives me a lot more ability to create, especially with the autofocus and video upgrades. Also, some smaller pros for this camera. 1. File transfer to mobile, you can simply connect a usbc cable and open up your apple photos app and import, super fast for raw and 4K video, and no need to connect and maintain a slow WiFi connection with the canon app. 2. Connecting this to your computer for video conferencing, again no need to use canon software (webcam utility) anymore, just connect the usbc and it works everytime. Lastly, one of my must haves for the RP/R8 is the Sunwayfoto PCL-RP dedicated L bracket for extra grip for your pinky. Made of metal, really solid, doesn’t add much weight, helps provide more balance to heavier L glass like the 50 1.2, provides Arca Swiss, and it’s 2 piece so you can remove the portrait orientation portion of the bracket. It provides more functionality and flexibility than the canon eos rp additional grip and it’s $20 cheaper.
I sold my RP because I could not stand the awful skin tones. Sometimes they were ok but too often they would be deep orange or too magenta and I had to spend ages in post, still unable to fully correct them, even though I only shoot RAW. Have you found any improvement with the R8 sensor? Or no change?
Hi Kevin. Great review mate. I'm probably going to get one of these beauties in the next couple of weeks, along with the EF to R adapter. This will replace my trusty 6D that I have had for about 12 years. I particularly like the autofocus for portraits as I recently took some photos for my great niece for her prom and although they were generally good, I slightly missed focus on a couple of shots. That should be a thing of the past with this camera :)
As someone who used to own the 6D, I can tell you that you are going to need to pick your jaw up off the floor when you see how much easier the AF on the R8 will be for you. You basically let it track the eye while you pay attention to how to frame the shot. No need to check your focus. It nailed. Thank you for the kind words and thanks for stopping by!
I have an M50 and M6 Mark ii. I love the ergonomic of the M50. Love smaller cameras. Added the R8 over Christmas. Will slowly add lenses. Thank you for your thorough review and lens recommendations in the comments.
Hi Kevin, me too, iam doing Christening weddings, architectural with the small and great R8, bought as a personal camera to replace my RP but now has become a camera for personal+profesional, nice review! @@KevinDeal
I don't consider the LP-E17 battery as a negative. On the contrary, it's so small and light that you can easily take one extra with you and it makes the camera smaller and lighter. In real world shooting is enough for 400-500 shots or even more.
I have paired my R8 with the RP battery grip and it cures the small battery problem, plus I use it with the RF 800 f11 and have no problem with getting great shots or with too much noise. I only took up photography in June 2023 as a retirement hobby, so I am not very experienced..ps, great review, thanks Kevin.
I took 15000 shots with the X-T100 in Lofoten a year ago and I keep sharpness in camera at least at minus 1 because I see weird things caused by the oversharpening in camera when I zoom in. Lately I set it to minus 2 and I cant say I am satisfied with it. R8 might be what I need. Panasonic S5II has strange colors and the jpegs are dark I find. The colors of the X-T100 is very different from the X-T1 and I like the T100 better. I only shoot jpegs and only in provida/ standard mode cos I want what I see. Many film makers using Lumix are into filmic look and weird colors. I take pictures I dont take this or that color film simulation. I get the feeling the filmmakers are more into the look of the picture rather than the picture itself.
I used a few lenses throughout the episode. For the female model in the studio, that was all the RF28-70 f/2. For the night shots with the male model, it was mainly the RF135 f/1.8. For the second male model outdoors (middle of the day) it was a combination of the RF135 f/1.8 and the RF50mm f/1.2. Hope that helps!
I own both. If you shoot sports and wildlife or you do lots of handheld video without a gimbal, the R7 is a better camera for those applications. If you do literally anything else, the R8 is superior in every way. Better AF. Better low light performance. Larger sensor size (not to be confused with megapixels). It has the EXACT same sensor as the R6 MKII. It renders skin tones much better than the R7.
Depends on the situation. If you're shooting a fast lens with good light, it doesn't matter at all. Think about shooting portraits during the day. In poor light, you can still pair it with an image stabilized lens and it works fine. My personal opinion is that photographers freak out too much about IBIS. We have 100+ years of sharp pictures we've taken without IBIS. All of a sudden, it gets invented and photographers convince themselves they "need" it to create great work, when they've had that ability all along. It does help in some situations, but in general, an image stabilized lens can pick up a bunch of that slack, and often, you don't need IS or IBIS if you have good light.
@@KevinDeal That makes sense, I see a bigger problem in one SD card slot and micro HDMI(With my old camera, I miss connecting to a large external monitor) I shoot mainly at concerts (I believe that a stabilized lens would be able to handle low light) and then products, especially watches and lifestyle/travel photo with watches. So I'm wondering if to save a little more for the r6 mkii or sony a7 iv, or if I'll make do with something like the R8 or even R7, Sony a6700. My decision flies back and forth :-D Thank you for you quick reply.
I'm getting this camera next month. I would love an all arounder lens since I guess I'm a semi beginner, not a lot of experience but I know my way around a camera. I was thinking about a rf 24-70 2.8f as my only lens for now, get my bearings, and see where I go from there. What do you think about that lens? How well will it do in low light situations? Would you recommend something else as an all around lens? Maybe but a couple of primes instead? Thanks a lot, great video!
Thank you for the kind words. Because of the R8’s excellent noise handling, I think 2.8 is fine. Personally I went for the 28-70 f2 because I wanted that extra stop of light and more shallow depth of field.
@@dancampeau1963 I did a 3 part review of the R7 on this channel if you decide to check that out. The R7 has fast FPS, more megapixels and two cards slots, but I think the R8 files look more pleasing and the autofocus is better. They're both close to the same price right now so it just depends on what is important to you.
I have been shooting with the Eos t3 for a few years now, it was given to me from my sister, and I’ve learned how to use a camera and have had a blast shooting around with it, but now I’m ready to upgrade, I have about 3k saved up which camera and lens would be best choice? I’m just a hobbyist.
$3K can get you something pretty good. As a hobbyist, which genre do you plan to shoot the most? I can help you lock into some recommendations with a little more information. I will likely recommend the R8 as the perfect body, but for your lens(es) I need a little more info.
@@JordanPatton-vy2ho OPTION 1 Canon R8 / RF14-35 f4 (landscapes) / RF85 f2 (portraits) = $3050 before tax OPTION 2 Canon R8 / RF24-105 f4 (landscapes AND general photography) / RF85 f2 (portraits) = $3050 before tax. Personally, I'd lean toward option 2. You could buy any of the previously mentioned products on Canon's refurbished website (I do this all the time) for around 15% additional discount. They warranty it like a new product. Never had an issue with this.
Still contemplating the R7 or R8 for nature, natural history and general travel photography; I already have a R6 for portraits and studio photography. Any suggestions?
To be honest I’d rather use the R8 over your R6 for portraits because the skin tones have improved a little with the sensor (same sensor as the R6MKII) and the autofocus is better as well. Outside of getting you closer with a crop and dual card slots there aren’t a ton of features that make the R7 better than the R8. If you end up using darker lenses for wildlife the R8 files will be cleaner and require less noise reduction. At the end of the day they are both fantastic cameras but I prefer the results I get with the R8 more.
Hi Kevin, Really enjoyed your informative video. I am thinking of getting the R8 soon. Could you kindly recommend a few non L lenses for the R8? I am interested in street photography, landscape photography & astrophotography (aspire to). I am currently considering getting the RF 35mm f1.8 (walkaround lens) & the RF 50mm f1.8 (portraits). Would you recommendation the RF 16mm f2.8 for astrophotography or do you have better alternatives in mind.
I think your trio of lenses is a good choice. I have reviewed both the RF35 1.8 and 16 2.8 on this channel. Both are amazing for everything you are looking to use them for. I’m currently working on my review of the 50 1.8. I can’t comment on Astro though with any of the lenses, as I did not test for them for it. The R8 should be amazing at Astro because of how well it handles at night. The 35 is what I would start with. Here’s my review if you have time to watch it. Thank you for the support! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U8pGjMZVgVw.htmlsi=D1ja2-SDm-p_zLH5
I advise anyone to turn off the Focus Preview in the R50 as it drains battery power and with lens like the 85mm f2 it drove me nuts as it kept refocusing even when you were not touching any button on the camera. Think its the purple menu number 2 if i remember correctly
HOLA.
Personally, I would get the R8 because it shoots in CLOG, which gives you more control over your video colors. I can get the R8 to match my R5 footage, which costs 3X more.
What’s the big deal about full hdmi? Also would usb c be better. Now days all the phones and laptops are using that. I assume it’s the standard now. Unless file transfer isn’t as fast as hdmi.
The big deal about not having a full sized HDMI port is that full-sized is more robust. Micro and Mini HDMI cables can rip out much easier. That USB port is attached to the mother board of the camera. So if you have any issues with the HDMI port breaking it's likely going to completely kill your camera to the point where a repair costs as much as a new camera. It's harder to bend a full sized HDMI connector, because they are larger and better protected.
You could. The idea of the exercise was to stretch it and compare. With the bird sitting on the log with IS on the lens and IBIS in the R7 I probably could have done that shot at like 1/250. Either way, the R8 was noticeably better at ISO 10,000 than the R7 was at ISO 6400. THAT was the point of the exercise. The birds were lazy and I didn't get many good shots in flight that morning.
@@chrisrussellca I'm not familiar with the heating issue. I've been shooting a lot of 4K 30FPS oversampled with it. It is winter here, so maybe I will encounter it in the summer. But I have yet to run into it. What is the scenario in which it is usually happening?
@@KevinDeal you’ll see it when you’re filming 4K60 after 10-20 minutes in avg to warm temperatures. I have my R8 on a rig with a usb fan to keep things cool. I can get 45-90 minutes on 4K60 with the small 80mm usb PC fan.
@@chrisrussellca so it basically has the same issue that the R5 has. Lame. I rarely shoot 60FPS, so I'm alright most of the time, but when it gets to 108 here in Texas this summer, I will likely be singing a different tune.
The only thing I like better about the R7 is IBIS and battery life. You can always carry and extra battery and perhaps use image stabilized lenses. Or just fast lenses at higher shutter speeds. Personally, I use my R8 way more. So I’d go that route.
@@KevinDeal, e esse ibis nem é tão bom ! Já vi testes em que a R8 vence a R7 em estabilização de vídeo, o ibis da R7 deixa o vídeo com movimentos estranhos!
I'm not sure which section you're talking about in this video. But for the wildlife section, I use the RF600mm f/11. That's the largest lens I own. It's not that heavy though.
The biggest problem with the R8 is the poor workmanship. Frequent breakdowns of the board, mechanical shutter. A slightly less noticeable disadvantage is not the best dynamic range. I really wanted to buy this camera and save money, but a plastic shutter, as well as the fact that the two bloggers I watched, the R8 broke after six months, forced me to abandon the purchase
Interesting. I’ve had mine for about 8 months now. No issues. Must be frustrating to have a camera go bad at six months. At least it’s still under warranty.
Interesting, I have been using it for 10 months and most of the time in the wild (I love birding), never had any issue. 90% of the time I can recover any photos that are over / underexposed due to rough lighting condition. I also bring this camera to all my oversea trips because it's so tiny compare to other FF cameras. I honestly don't think you should worry about it tbh :)
The foreground subject had flash on them because they are a model with dark skin. Have you ever tried to take pictures of people with dark skin at night? The other 90% of the scene was completely untouched by the flash. The ISO was upwards of 12,000 ISO. It's a perfectly fine low-light test. Just look at the ambience. It tells you everything you need to know. In fact, I kept referencing the ambience in my low-light test because I knew the flash made no impact there.
@@KevinDeal Sir, it seems that you know everything about everything and you're not interested in even knowing why I said what I said. Also, I read the comment that you deleted. I think it was rude. I wish you good luck for future videos. Will not be commenting again.
I personally don't need the AD-E1 for the R8. My Godox and Profoto triggers work fine. The R50 on the other hand needs the AD-E1, as it is not compatible.
Very nice review. I don't think the R8 was meant to be the EOS R replacement, more likely was intended to be the RP replacement. It has the same body as the RP, the launch price was much closer to the RP that the R and the R was the main "flagship" camera of the RF system when it was released and the RP came later as a cheaper version. Just like the R8 is the cheaper version of the R6. I think the real R replacement was the R5.
It depends on how you're going to use it. I've shot photography for most of my life with no IBIS or stabilized lenses. My experiences didn't feel limited.
That’s one way to look at it. The other way to look at it is that they took those features out to make the camera $1000 cheaper. The. Those who need them and all the extra features can get the R6 MK II. The battery choice they made for the R8 was 100% a terrible choice.
@@ZombieRofl all camera companies make baffling decisions. I hear Sony users complain all the time about things in their cameras. It just so happens that the one thing that drives you mad about Canon, they did to the R8. Trust me, there's some dude out there right now saying "I'm sorry but this is typical Sony behavior" about something that Sony does that pisses them off. Maybe Canon just isn't a good fit for you. But it sounds like you like Sony, so at least you have that.
@@KevinDeal I’ve been a main canon shooter for 25 years now. I’ve had Nikons to, but started to hate canon for not opening their RF system to other brands.

Just bought a refurbished R8 as a back-up to my R5, which I use primarily for wildlife. I don't always feel comfortable taking my R5 for everyday or travel photography, and I really like the idea of a lower-profile body paired with the smaller STM lenses for those occasions. Or even the RF 14-35 seems like a natural pairing. Thanks for an excellent review.
Hello Kevin. Thank you for the video, it's very good. A question please, because the R8 is not so good for landscape, because you said it is good for portrait, street, but little for landscape. I was considering buying it for landscape but apparently you don't recommend it very much. Can you help me because it's not good for landscape, please?
The R8 is excellent for landscapes if you don't need to make large prints. The sensor is beautiful. But if you make really large prints, you may want to look into something with more megapixels, like the R5.
Canon R8 is an awesome camera for a hybrid user like me. I own it with RF24mm F1.8 and RF24-105 F4-7.1. I am really unhappy with 24-105mm kit photo image quality. Canon users need a cheap continuous aperture zoom option with image stabilization which will have F2.8. Canon can bring a good non-L lens like RF28-75mm F2.8 (Must be better than Nikon 28-75mm). Canon made a big mistake in the kit lens choice for both APS-C and full frame. RF24-50mm or RF15-30mm sucks. They saved their L lens sales but lost thousands of semi-professional users who switched to Sony. Canon also needs a cheap telephoto option like Nikon 180-600mm which is a game changer for Nikon.
As a hobbyist and father of a daughter who plays volleyball would this camera a good choice for video and photography or would you recommend another camera or brand in its price range and comparable class?
I rented the R7 to try with a color run and it definitely feels and sounded less solid, but the images out of it were gorgeous. While I was there with you in Dallas, I have to say the R8 was pretty impressive and for events or going places that you don't want to bring your super expensive cameras, I think it definitely works great! The images you took looked amazing and are portfolios for working models so, you certainly justified the R8 being able to be used by professionals for professional purposes. On the streets where you have no idea who or what you'll run into i like the idea of having a lower cost camera that still does a great job!
The low light performance and weight is making me think of leaving the R5 at home when I visit other cities to shoot models. The shots looked fantastic. Speaking of fantastic. Awesome video work! Wish I had a bad ass videographer with me on every shoot. Looks way more professional.
I've owned an R8 for a month or so now and I wouldn't go back to anything else! The AF is truly incredible, I can shoot 40FPS completely silently, and it's compact enough to bring with me everywhere with the 28mm F2.8. The lack of a mechanical shutter I never really understood as a downside, unless you are taking photos of someone swinging a golf club it's a non-issue. I always struggled with people changing how they are acting as soon as I pulled a camera out and started taking pictures, but now that I can do that in a subtle way my photos have gotten even better! Sure you could always use electronic mode on a camera with a mechanical shutter, but that makes the camera even bigger. If you want that, buy an R6 II and not the R8!
Nice! You got that refurb deal. That sold out fast. I picked up a new R8 for $1,200 during Black Friday. I’m adapting my old 40/2.8, but I def want a RF 35/1.8. Nice small camera.
If you were going to purchase this as an all around camera for your family to use, what lens would be the best option? Family portraits, vacactions and the like?
There's a curtain that you can enable to drop to cover the sensor when you're changing lens. You just need to perform a "clean sensor now" and turn off the camera as soon as you hear it click.
I tried that. It worked. Being that you have to time it correctly, is that a true function of the camera or are you simply turning it off while it's trying to do something else? It seems like the latter. I wonder if there are any consequences in doing so. Nonetheless, thank you for informing me about this. I learned something new today.
Finally moving on from my 7D and picking up my R8this week. I am really excited! This question is off-topic, but I am curious what strobe you used when shooting your model. I need to update my lighting system and yours looked perfect for a single light. Thanks and thank you for a great video.
I was using a Profoto D1 which you can find used all day for $500-$600. I used to own the 7D. Your jaw is going to hit the floor when you see how good the autofocus is on the R8. Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks! The battery is tiny and another one fits in my pocket. It hasn't been a huge issue. Now, if you record a 45 minutes video at 4K 60FPS, that's another story. The battery becomes a big deal at that point. lol
Should say 6D not R6, i also think the R50 is a really great camera for the price and light weight used the R50 with the 24-105 non L (i have both versions of the 24-105) when i was at a wedding as a guest, was very pleased with the results
Yeah. I'm excited to do my R50 review. I bought it to just be a static shot in my studio for my You Tube channel but I figured I might as well do a review of it too. It has been impressing me throughout the process.
Great review! I bought R8 after tried many others cameras. Like S5II for example, and Sony A7 III. I prefer the compact size, IQ, and ergonomy of this Canon R8. I paired it with the 35mm f1.8 which is brillant for street photography. I come from micro four thirds, that I've used during 5 years. I'm very happy with this new kit.
This camera would be absolutely perfect for me. Except for one thing. I absolutely H A T E when the card slot is on the bottom of the camera. I need to use a tripod for a lot of the photography I do at my workplace (photograph machinery in dimly lit shop environments). I also need to change cards quite a bit. It's a shame because this camera is the one I would definitely go for--it's the right price. I prefer Canon and I'm currently in the market for a new camera to replace an older Lumix that is not behaving. Might have to consider an older barely-used R which is at a similar price point instead.
I have to say I am amazed at the DR on this little beast. I am a shadow-pusher/highlights puller and it handles it (and iso) really well, which is far more than I can say for MANY other mirrorless cams.
