85mm is fine with a professional model. With regular people, less comfortable with having a camera pointed at them, 135mm is brilliant. You get to stand back and people act much more naturally.

One thing you could do with the 135 better than an 85 is that if you’re in a place where you have a lot of busy backgrounds that you don’t want to include but you want to isolate a certain part of the background maybe some flowers on the tree maybe some leaves coming off of a tree maybe you’re in a parking lot but there’s one specific spot that looks nice this happens all the time as an event photographer who has to shoot portraits places that aren’t exotic and beautiful using a 135 or even better a 200 mm from I 70 to 200 helps to isolate those patches and create portraits that don’t seem like they are in the place that you are actually in. Also the compression that you got from the 135 or the 200 mm from a 70 to 200 is very unique and creates an image that clearly cannot be hard on an iPhone it just looks very professional.

I love, love, LOVE shooting 135 1.8. It's the lens I use most often. My camera and 135 1.8 have a very close, loving relationship! I think most of my favorite photos are ones I've done with that lens too. I love my 85 1.4 and 50 1.2 as well,, but they don't excite me as much as the 135 does. There's a 3-dimensional look to the 135's images that I don't see with any other lens, On the other hand, if I don't have a lot of space, the 135 isn't a very good choice.

I preferred the 85mm examples here, part because I think the 135mm has too much compression for this sort of portraiture. But technically, they look to perform at the same level at least in this video. Thank you for this great demonstration!

While the 85-105mm range is used most often, the 200mm f/2 is simply sublime. Using it for outdoor photos like the first ones on the path, the background becomes painted colors. I tend to stay closer to the subject, almost filling the frame with a full length or even a upper-body framing. Even with city portraits, there the combination of soft yet discernible provides context while keeping the attention on the subject.

I agree. For couples, get them and blur out the backgrounds with the 1.2 of the 85mm. I do love the compression and how everything looks around a focal object with a 135 and the 1.8(or 2.0 for us poor EF adapted guys) is low enough to still get images that are stunning.

I had the EF 85 f/1.2 and thought the DOF was too shallow for closer shots. The eyes would be in focus but nose and ears out of focus. So I used the 135mm for tighter shots and 100mm for waist/bust shots. When I switched to RF, I got the 50 f/1.2 and 135 f/1.8 but got the 85 f/2 macro for those few macro shots I do. I would have preferred a 100mm f1.4, but figured it’ll be a while before Canon makes it and that’s why I got the 135mm. The 50mm does whole body with nice separation and 135 for tighter shots. For more than one person in the shot (or for events), I just use the 70-200 f/2.8. These RF lenses are so sharp and perform so well that I thought about just using the 70-200 and 50 1.2 (with R5), but I still have a soft spot for primes from back in the FD and EF Mount days. Thanks for a great comparison video! I think most all of those shots would have been better suited with a 50mm, and comparisons with the lenses you selected should have been limited to bust or tighter. It doesn’t make sense to stand so far away unless doing events or if model prefers it.

@SummersSnaps
@SummersSnaps Год назад
This is actually my combo for event work. I find that the 135mm instrumental to give some breathing space for some shots, speakers or candid, its nice to have that reach and space rather than getting too close with an 85. But the 85 is more versatile overall, but I can't justify really keeping both in my bag so it becomes a 50 and 135 combo.

@@Tegneaufreak Yeh, I think the main choice between the two is whether when snapping certain people appreciate additional breathing room. I find the 135 nice for that at events with speakers etc, instead of composing for the same shot and kinda entering their personal space.

Speaking from Experience with my EF lenses.... the 135 actually replaced using a 70-200 for me - it was lighter, faster and sharper, and with a crop you got closer to that 200mm anyway.., I think both 85 / 135 can be amazing portrait lenses, and would have loved to have seen you do a few shots with a closer / more headshot style portrait, and heard your opinions on how you felt the lenses were for closer portrait shots - I find each lens can suit different faces better

Hi Irene! You have an amazing and inspirational style. Congrats! One minor but an important comment about your comparison that I consider could confuse some viewers. I took your pictures as an example around 6:30. You have exposed the 85mm by 1/250, ISO 100 F/1.2. The exposure for the 135mm was 1/200, ISO 100 F/1.8. The result is a slightly less exposure picture using the 135mm. You comment that the 1.2 provides you this extra juice of ligth. However, to get the same amount of ligth in 1.8 that you have using 1.2, you need to "recover" 1 stop. By reducing the shutter speed from 1/250 to 1/200, you recovered 1/3. To achieve the same exposure and keeping the shutter speed at 1/200, the correct ISO should be 160. I suppose the noise resulted would be less than recover the exposure in post. Hugs from Brazil from a huge fan.

Imo both are incredible lenses but my two cents is that the 85 is a superior choice for most. I have a 135 1.8 in my kit and while I love it, I still use 85 far more often due to space constraints. I feel 85 is just the perfect portrait focal length. It isn’t ideal for all situations but I feel it is phenomenal in the widest variety of them of any prime. Id love to see canon make a 105 1.4 R, i think that could really give the 85 1.2 a run for it’s money.

Do you think there would be any advantage to using the 135 f/1.8 for tighter portraits/head shots? I don’t know, just wondering. It looks like they’re both very similar, while the 85 f/1.2 requires less room to work with and is also a bit better in low light. I don’t own either lens, but if I had to choose I’d probably get the 85, because if I want longer focal lengths the 70-200 f/2.8 isn’t bad for portraits. I have the RF 50 f/1.2 and absolutely love it, but since I don’t shoot portraits professionally I haven’t been able to justify getting the 85 f/1.2. Most of my hobby work is landscapes and a bit of wildlife/birds.

I prefer the 135 lens because it doesn’t smash the background too much. Especially in the event that you want to keep more background such as beautiful beach, trees, etc…

You can just shoot the 85 at f 2.8, the 135 compresses the background a lot more

I do prefer 85mm examples. I've always felt like 135mm is kinda fifth wheel lens and "too close" to 85-100mm lenses. I would rather get 200mm to get bigger separation from 85mm focal lenght.

Irena, you take beautiful video and wonderful photos, tell me which lens do you think you would choose: 50mm f1.2 or 135mm f1.8 for portraits. I have 85 mm f 1.2 and I don't know which one is more practical. help me because you have more experience. thank you for everything. And one more question, why don't you have new videos? Don't worry about the opinions of people who don't know anything about the art of portrait photography. For me, you make beautiful things and bring out the beauty of a woman. well, maybe some are too brave when it comes to skimpy clothes. But you mostly show the beauty of a woman and her delicacy. Don't give up on photography and do what you love, I feel your passion and you are my inspiration. keep your head up and thanks in advance for your answer
