How does a full frame camera work with the new RF 200-800 Lens? We test just that using the Canon R5. We will be looking at the Autofocus performance, image quality, video cpaabilities, and the image quality of the lens paired with the R5. And we get lucky and find our Winter Trumpeter swans on the Kenai River to spend a few days with to test this Camera and Lens combo.

I recently got the 200-800 and we have nothing but overcast skies here in Ontario. However, the lens is blowing me away! I am looking forward to some light though, so I can bump up the shutter speed for some action/flight shots. My favourite birds to shoot are crows, because it can be decently challenging, they don't like the camera lol. They have so much character, I just love them.

So far, the humble Pileated Woodpecker and the Bluejay. However, I am really new to wildlife photography so no eagles etc here yet. Coming from landscape photography. Did snag the canon R8 and the RF 100-400 you had recommended. Very impressed with the combination. Both are very good, and for the money spent, impossible to beat really. So thank you for your reviews on both. Congrats on hitting 11k!

It is a long and dark winter in the UK thus far, so it’s very informative to see how this lens and camera combo performs in bad light. For those of us who live in less sunny parts of the world it’s a very important factor to consider when making and expensive purchase like this lens is. You have done a great job because it’s easy to shoot in ideal and sunny conditions. I will certainly get this lens this year and no teleconverters needed!

The R5 and this lens has continued to impress. Yesterday I had a Lark Sparrow foraging very close, in overcast light. It was so close that at 800mm f/10 the tail tip was out of focus when the bird was facing me with its tail behind it. The keeper rate with the R5 is just higher than the R7 regardless of lens, but you already knew that 😀 What I find is that if the R5 misses, a whole burst is no good. If it locks, most of the photos are in focus on the eye, whereas with the R7, at best maybe half the burst is in focus on the eye. Today's our first accumulating snow for the season in my area, so no birding. Looks like you have a great snowy landscape there! With the lark sparrow, I found that Topaz Photo AI lost some detail during denoise on the white belly feathers. So, I used a brush in Lightroom and added more texture to that area and it looked nice and sharp. So are you a Canon guy again, or sticking with Nikon as your main rig? This lens got rid of any of my ideas of switching to Nikon for the 180-600 and 800PF.
@WILDALASKA
@WILDALASKA 8 месяцев назад
I will probably always shoot both Canon and Nikon from here on out. Canon has to get out some pro wildlife lenses in 2024 or I may have to grab the 400 or 600 TC lens form Nikon, which will force my hand to shoot Nikon more and more. The current canon RF lenses are just EF lenses with RF adapter build in. Still amazing lenses. Have to see what the R1 looks like also.
@hstein27

@WILDALASKA The latest rumor is R1 before R5 Mk2. Hopefully, R1 will not be over $6k. Also, the rumored 200-500 f/4 may be a great option.

Thanks for the review with the R5. Even though the lighting was poor you still got some good shots. One comparison I would like to see is the 500 f4 and the 200-800 at 500mm. Have the same settings for both lenses and see the difference between the two. Maybe even both with the tele-converter. Just a quick test to see if any noticeable difference between the two.

@WILDALASKA
@WILDALASKA 8 месяцев назад
Keeper rate as in focus? Noth are pretty much the same as that is more the photographer and knowing their camera. Now for rolling shutter affecting the image, the R5 is better.
@mikeymike4366
@mikeymike4366 8 месяцев назад
Yes keeper rate as ok in focus shots. If you were to shoot the R5 and the R7 side by side with the 200-800mm. 100 shots each, will you end up with more in focus shots with the R5??With my experience I find the R7 tends to not be as reliable, it’s faster to acquire focus but not as sticky and reliable like an R5. When looking at images the focus point is on the Birds Eye yet it’s soft and the branch beside it is in focus.

Do you think the r6 would get as good of IQ as the r5 with this lens?
@WILDALASKA

I will be shooting the R8 this weekend and have a video on it in a week or so. The R8 is basically the R6MKII without IBIS. So it should be a good comparison for you.

The jacket is amzn.to/3HcdW52 and the gloves are just some bow hunting gloves from cabalas. No idea what they are called. they are just waterproof to keep water and snow off my hands. Minimal warmth from them.

Glad to be part of the 11k... congrats. My RF200-800mm arrived a few days ago. This weekend I took a walk with it on the R6MkII and I think this combo is going to work SUPER well. I love to photograph owls... short-eared owls have to be up at the top.

I’m enjoying your reviews on that lens (especially since they’re coming from Alaska!). It’s very tempting to trade in my 800 f11 to upgrade to that bad boy. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to visit your spectacular state. My favorite subject to photograph on that trip had to be brown bears at Brooks Falls. Truly a bucket list item for me! Here in Minnesota, bald eagles are my favorite wildlife subject (they were beyond awesome when we were in Alaska too)!

First-time commenter but I've been a subscriber for quite a while now. Lived in Anchorage from 1996-2002 and traveled the state, so most every place you describe takes me down memory lane! Quick questions about the quick release plate you are using on the 200-800: brand? size? does it have both 3/8" and 1/4" mounting screws to keep it from twisting? I haven't been able to locate anything suitable just yet. Thanks for the info and the review-beautiful video of the swans. BTW, I'm live in Oregon and my favorite birds to shoot are the owls-great gray, great horned, burrowing, barn, pygmy, etc. Loads of fun!

I don't know what brand plate I put on the 200-800. I have several. It has 2 mounting screws 1/4 and 3/8. Keeps the twist from happening.

Awesome Scott! Did I see the distance right on a few of your shots? 700 yards?? I'm super excited and hoping by the time I can afford to get this lens I'm not stuck waiting forever. But I will gladly wait. I know I keep bugging ya about an r6 mk.2 review which I'm sure it's going to do just fine on that camera body as well. Great job my friend. How do I get in an entry for print giveaway?
@WILDALASKA
@WILDALASKA 8 месяцев назад
That's what the exif said in its focal distance. It may be closer to infinity for the lens, but I usually get infinity symbol at those distances. Ill be doing the R8 which is close enough to the r6mkII just no IBIS in the r8

Great reviews of the new lens. For the time being, I'm staying with my RF 600 and 800 f 11's until all the reviews are completed. I use the RF 600/800 for light weight excursions mostly. I have a EF 600 f 4 v3 and a EF 200-400 for my main wildlife lenses. My favorite bird to shoot is the Norther Flicker. I have captured this bird making a nest and in various stationary shots. My goal is to capture it in flight with its beautiful orange feathers exposed. I have had as many as five at one time visit my deck here in Colorado to raid my feeders. Such a beautiful bird.

I got my 200-800 first day and it's been delivering even in overcast PNW skies. I took it out today and caught some nice red-wing blackbirds and a bald eagle trying (and failing) to take a coot. But probably my favorite subject here in Seattle are the Anna's hummingbirds that stay all year round.

I also have the 200-800 and I’m having a lot of fun with it. A few days ago I was shooting ʻŌpeʻapeʻa, our native Hawaiian hoary bat. Barely getting useable photos, but so challenging to try to freeze a bat in flight in dusky light!

I just got the big - heavy Sigma 60-600mm sports ef for my ventures into bird photography. I better eat my Wheaties... I'm just starting this so I like Robins and crows here in Colorado. I don't really have a favorite yet... I like the Sigma but you've got me looking at the 200-800 Canon for the future.

Thanks, Scott, for the R5 treatise. I have R5, awaiting the 200-800 on backorder. Low light? What if you throw on an R6 MKII body? I'm thinking about it. You trade megapixels for shooting in the dark!
@WILDALASKA
@WILDALASKA 8 месяцев назад
So in reality. The 2 cameras shoot in low light the same. You just have more pixels on the r5. The noise per pixel is the same. You just don't 'notice' on a smaller mp camera is all. Plus once you process through dox, topaz, dpp4, etc. the noise is 'poof'

I know your lighting is a struggle, so you have been shooting wide open at f/9. But, unlike my Sigma 160-600c, it seems you don’t have to worry about that. The Sigma I have to shoot at f/9 to see decent sharpness. My favorite bird to shoot here in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin is the Belted Kingfisher. Cheers!

We recently discovered your channel ❤❤❤, thank you. Too bad Canon won’t allow 3rd parties to make RF mounts or I would be looking for an adapter to pair this lens with my Z8. Favorite birds today were American Robins feeding on berries.

Canon RF nor Nikon Z can be mounted to anything else. So that's across the board. There are EF and F cross manufacturer adapters. But for the Z mount. The 180-600 with a 1.4 TC is pretty much this lens. I love the 180-600. Both lenses are a beast. Welcome aboard.

Good morning.. I see you used a strap on the lens. Looks like it hangs really well. What type of strap are you using? Also the video camera your using.. Didn't look like it was low light so great video. You use the Atomos in filming your still shots, or are you switching from video to stills.. Thanks again.. Great stuff..

I have a blue heron that lives on a pond near me. For about half a year as soon as I showed up it would fly off. Over about a year I sat on the bank and slowly it became less skittish. A few months back it walked up next to me with a bass in its beak to show me what it caught. So, the blue heron is my favorite bird to photograph.

I purchased the lens the other day and it's amazing! One huge problem for me though is most filters do not work with the hood at the same time. The Sigma WR filter overhangs by about half a mm and because of this the hood doesn't slide over it.

Great video, Scott! It's like hanging with a friend. My favorite bird to shoot at the New Jersey Shore is any rarity that shows up. I chase. Unfortunately for me, my camera store got in zero 200-800 lenses. I didn't get one. Still waiting. The bird that I would have loved to shoot with the lens is a Red-flanked Bluetail. Yes, you read that right. The first one for the east coast. It's an insane rarity and only 20 minutes from home. I hope it sticks around a bit longer. Congrats on 11k subscribers! 🎉🎉🎉
