Comparison video about the Canon RF 24-105mm F4 L against the EF 24-105mm F4 L
I go into detail about the weight, size and compatibility of the lenses and show some test shots from each lens and as a bonus put the RF lens up agains the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Let me know your thoughts about these lenses and if you would buy/already own either lens and what your impressions are in the comments below. Thanks as always for watching and stay tuned for new videos each Wednesday until things get back to normal again.

Thanks for the comparison. I just love the good old EF 24-105mm. I already had two, the second I sold thinking about buying the RF version. But looking closely, I think (at least for me who use it for photos most of the time) it's not worth the difference. Yesterday I found a rarity: a brand new, never used EF unit in the box and I bought it for an incredible $500! This is $800 cheaper than the EF version 2 and the latest RF version. I think it was a good deal. Oh, I also use it on a Canon EOS R and a Canon EOS R7.

Yes, don't change for the RF version for photos, the quality is 99% the same. $500 was a bargain. Well done and thanks for watching.

I trade in my old “EF 24-105 F/4 i + 70D” with new Rf 24-105 F/4 and I paid 400$ difference . I know it is not a good deal . But after tiring the new lense , it is really much more that what and other has mentions. One of the points it is much less quite and the auto focus is stable and when I switch to manual focus I can see my numbers in the screen . I think I’m happy with the deal and I may discover other good points that are not mentioned in the video

Would the EF lense cause the RP to fall over on a tripod due to weight?
@Paullebbon
@Paullebbon 4 года назад
No more than the EF lens would, the weight is not much different between the lenses. I hope this helps, thanks for watching.

The Canon 70D is a great camera and a favorite of Casey Neistat. Paired with the 24-105 f4L you will get nice sharp images and good quality video. Thanks for watching.

Well actually considering the crop factor of 1.6, you'll miss on the wide angle side, it will act like a 38mm instead of a 24mm, I think that for aps-c cameras it's better to just stick with native ef-s lenses, for example the sigma 17-50 f2.8 it will be a far more usable focal length, and the wider aperture it will help

I have the Ef 24-105 f/4 mark ii on an rp and I’ve really enjoyed it. It has the locking hood as well. I just received the rf 24-105 f/4 today. Hope it’s as nice as I’ve seen in reviews.

It's a beautiful lens and I am sure you will love it. But I don't think you will see much difference between the images. You will like the way it looks on camera and the extra balance it brings. Thanks for watching.
@Paullebbon
@Paullebbon 4 года назад
My camera is the eos R, the RP is a little smaller in size and so I imagine most lenses will be front heavy on it. I think Canon wants people to hold the camera body and then hold the lens with the opposite hand, that is why they include a quick change front ring. Between the RP and 6D2, it depends if you want mittorless or a standard size camera. I had the 6D2 and loved it, I woukd choose it again over the RP, but not over the eos R. The eos R is much better than the RP or 6D2. Thanks for watching.

I’m torn whether i should get the RF or EF 24-105. I don’t know whether I should consider portability as the RF lens with my EOS R will be lighter and have better image quality vs the cheaper EF version whether it’s the mk i or ii. Basically having a dilemma between comfort vs cost.
@Paullebbon
@Paullebbon 3 года назад
Hi, the RF is not much lighter, the image quality is almost the same and it is a little fatter than the EF. If you are a film maker, buy the RF. If you can assure yourself you will never buy another Canon D series or EF only camera, buy the RF. It is not so much the price, it is more for future proofing. I have both lenses and the RF I use mainly while filming. In the end it is your choice my friend. It is like an Apple Watch, each one gets a little bit better, but you can still wear the older watch as it does the same thing as the new one. Thanks for watching,
@charlesp9449
@charlesp9449 3 года назад
@@Paullebbon oh yeah, i am aware of the negligible weight difference. It’s a bit petty but i wouldn’t want to be lugging around less compact setup with the EF on my EOS R when i can have the RF which is minus the length of the adapter. Good point on the future proofing tho! Never really thought about that. Thanks! x

You’re welcome. Which ever lens you buy just remember one thing, use it and enjoy it. The stabilisation on both is excellent and you don’t need a bag full of prime lenses. Have fun with it and use it well.

What is your opinion about the EF with Adapter vs the RF? I have a 5d Mark iii with the 24-105mm EF L and was thinking about getting an RP + 24-105mm RF kit. I am getting into video and really need the dual pixel AF. Was wondering if the smarter thing was just to upgrade the body and use the EF lens as the resale value of it is now about 1/3 of what the RF lens would cost me.
@Paullebbon
@Paullebbon 4 года назад
The older EF lenses work fine with the EOS R, I bought the 24-105 RF because it is the cheapest L glass just to see if it was any better, it is better and looks amazing and is much shorter than the EF with adapter. But, unless you zoom in max and pixel peep you won’t be able to see any difference. I am saving up to buy the new 70-200 L RF to replace my broken EF version, I will do another video with that lens later on. Thanks for watching.
@Paullebbon
@Paullebbon 4 года назад
Answer 2. Yes, by all means use your old lenses, they work perfectly with the EOS R. But if you are getting into video, I would definitely suggest buying the EOS R over the Rp. The EOS R uses the LP-6EN battery that lasts for 400 shots and can record video well, the RP uses the tiny battery from the M6 (or M50) and runs out quickly when recording video and it also has no C-Log. The price of the EOS R is much lower now the R5 is about to come out. Something to think about.

Paul, I see the older EF version in your left hand not the newer EF version as you stated. The words IMAGE STABALIZER are near the mount as they are on the older version. Also next to the red ring there is no Roman Numeral II as there is on the newer version. Can you tell my why I am seeing it this way. What am I not understanding?
@Paullebbon
@Paullebbon 3 года назад
Hi, the EF lens is the 24-105 for L not the mark II version, what made you think that? The mark II version had the exact same image as the older one, but for video it was much quieter. The RF lens has a sharper image and an almost silent motor, but I am having some major AF issues after using with the R6 and so I would not recommend at this time. Thanks for watching and I apologise for the misunderstanding.

@@Paullebbon Thanks Paul. I agree with everything you said. More explanation helped. I don't even have a 24-105 but am purchasing the version I EF. I do video on the EOS R, but I do not us any audio so the noise does not matter to me. I can't justify the additional cost of either the version II or the RF, so the version I seems just right for me. Thanks again.

I couldn't agree more. I have the eos R and now the R6 but apart from the little RF 35mm I just picked up cheap I am buying the EF lenses and using the adapter. The RF 24-105 let me down and so I am not going to continue buying them until the price balances with the EF lenses. Enjoy your EF 24-105 it is a beautiful lens.

@Paullebbon

It is like comparing an iPhone 11 Pro Max to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. When you make the video, it all boils down to the look of the phones. Because the actual changes made to the newer phone is so small and all you have left is how it looks a little different. Thanks for watching.
@Paullebbon

Please don’t get me wrong though. I use the newer RF lens all of the time. But it is because people can see it is the RF lens, not because it takes a better photo. 😉
@Paullebbon

I hope this helps. At the end of the day it is personal choice. Most photographers can take the RF24-105, the RF24-105 Kit or the EF24-105L lenses and get the exact same image from them. It depends more on the camera and how far you want to zoom in and pixel peep. Me personally. I love the old EF 24-105Lon the Canon 5D mark 1. I took my best work on that camera, it has a cool old gothic look to the photos. Thanks again for watching and for the comment.

It will work great if using for stills photography. For video work I would go with the f4 MKII or the RF version as the MK1 is a little noisy when focus breathing. Thanks for watching.

I have a kit lens 18-150mm on my eos m6 mark ii. Thinking of getting the ef 24-105 to maximize the 32 mp sensor on it. Do you think I'll see a difference?
@Paullebbon
@Paullebbon 4 года назад
That is a hard question to answer. Yes, you should see a massive difference if your talking about the 24-105 f4L lens. BUT, if you’re looking at a small 7”x4” print you will see no difference. Blow your image up and really peep at those pixels and you will definitely see a difference, I have used the 24-105 L many times on my M6 mk1 and mk2 and the 32mp sensor loves the L glass. If you pair that up with the viltrox speed booster it will make the f4 go down to a f2.8 and it will be much brighter, although you will lose a little sharpness in the image on video. Anyway I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

Hi Ivan. I am using v1 EF lens and v1 RF lens. The v1 and v2 EF L lens main difference is the noise generated while recording video, the v1 has more noise while focusing and has slightly more focus breathing. For still images they are identical. The v1 RF lens is so much nicer to use with the Canon EOS R. I hope this answers your question and thanks for watching.
