Thank you for this review, I have the R6MII for almost a year and have been using my EF lenses with the adapter, however my husband and I are heading away on a trip for our 20th anniversary and I stumbled across this lens, on sale and with all the reviews Ive seen, after seeing your write up on your blog I pulled the trigger! I love my big L lenses however traveling I need to have the lower weight so will be traveling with my R6MII (bringing my RP as a back up just in case) and my RF35mm f1.8 and this lens!

@@DustinAbbottTWI so far so good, it's definitely not L lens quality however was very impressed as an all in one option! Excited to test it more. It's not a heavy lens, but also not light, I appreciate the feeling of quality in my hands when using. More stable.

Dustin, not using this lens but Canon: Do yourself a favor and program one of the control elements to AF Stop. Set the camera to AF, press this control and you immediately enjoy manual focus whatever the lens/camera is set to (including all focus aids). This does not make a focus switch at the lens barrel useless, but it is fast MF access I am used to enjoy since many years.

Thank you for your review of this lens. I got one when my 24-105L went on back order for five months and I needed something. I would be interested in an update using something like the EOS R6, which I have. You commented that there was no equivalent to this lens in the EF line-up, but I have the EF 28-300L - admittedly, this is a MUCH more expensive lens, and is a bit of a howitzer (being all metal) but it did offer super-zoom functionality. I got this unit years ago and it still produces great images within its designed parameters. To me the world of pixel-peepers does not represent reality. Most people shoot for social media, digital devices or modest-sized prints, and the market that this lens seems most suitable for would be in that area, and thus a good match. Finally, I agree about Canon and non-L lens hoods. They SHOULD offer the lens hoods with the lenses. I get third-party ones at a fraction of the OEM price and they work perfectly well. It's somewhat hard to call the 28-300L a true equivalent. It's size, weight, and price definitely put it in a different category.

I compared this one to the newer 24-240 RF and as much as I wanted to get the L version, given the weight and age... I had to go with the 24-240!

Good review, considering getting one now that I have a full frame camera. Do you think issues like distortion will be much less with newer cameras which have come out in the past eighteen months. Including latest R6 II

Nothing will have changed with the distortion as that is a lens characteristic and has nothing to do with the camera.

Thanks for the review. Very informative (although the background music was a bit annoying). I'm getting an R6, so I'm wondering how this lens will perform on that body. I have no RF glass yet and what RF glass that we can buy here in Australia is very expensive. This 24-240 is around $1,400 AUD (or around $900 USD).

RF glass seems to be expensive everywhere! The lower resolution R6 is a little kinder to this lens optically.

Pure guess, but I think the Canon will outperform the Sony simply because the Sony lens is 5 years old. Technology has improved a lot especially during the last 2-3 years.

How can you compare a Non-L lens to an L lens? Also the larger range compromises image quality. Basically you are choosing better image quality or better range and not having to change lenses. :)

I personally would go with the 18-150mm. I wasn't impressed with the 24-240mm at all.

Do you have any recommendations of non RF lenses that work well with the EOS R? I have the 35mm RF lens but looking for a 24-70 and wondered about the Tamron options?

As far as I know, most third party lenses adapt just fine to the EOS R.

Have you done comparison with the similar focal lens from Sony 24-240 and probably fuji 18-135 or maybe some other brands. I’m Sony user and thinking to get rp with the canon 24-240 But if s something like Sony than it n chance I would do that

I had a chance to compare this lens on Canon RP with another budget superzoom - APS-C lens Nikon 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 (eq. to 28-210mm f/5-8 on full frame) on 24 MP camera (Nikon D5500). Aside from obvious slight difference in focal length, I was not able to see any meaningful difference between these two lenses in therms of sharpness, bokeh, CA or stabilization efficiency. I think, the focusing speed of 24-240 of RP was slightly faster than 18-140 on D5500, however I didn't compare it in strictly controlled way, so just a subjective opinion here. Considering 18-140 is waaaay cheeper and 200 g lighter, I decided to return 24-240 to shop and to keep using 18-140 as my travel zoom.

Hi there, Wolfgang has given some anecdotal feedback, and I think he has a fair point. I'm not sure this lens is worth changing systems over, but I also think it is a great choice if you don't move over to Canon mirrorless.

Optically I prefer the 35-150 (not even close), though the 24-240 has the advantage of faster AF and having IS.

That doesn't make sense either. Even Nikon ships lens hoods with their non-S lenses (except the pancake lenses but those are super cheap lenses like $300 each). But at the end of the day, lenses like this from camera and lens manufacturers boast convenience over optical quality and for some, particularly those who like to travel, that surpasses pixel-level pixel peeping sharpness. And in reality, most viewers (not photographers necessarily) won't be able to tell unless the lens is very bad. So these do have a place in the market but if you're a pixel peeping snob, this may not be the type of lens for you. But as a travel lens, it's great because it's one lens that really does what about 2-3 other lenses would and it means you can worry less about gear and more about photography. This paired with Canon's cheaper ultra wide zoom lens might be a good travel pair that is affordable yet offers a wide range of focal lengths.

I legitimately don't understand this lens, why does it exist? RF mount isn't meant to be cheap nor low performance. I genuinely don't think anyone buying an EOS R will be using this, lol. Is Canon just releasing random consumer parts before R5?

Hmmm, I don't really agree. I think that the existence of bodies like the RP show that Canon wants full frame mirrorless to be accessible to a broad range of potential customers, and frankly, far more people will buy a lens like this than will buy a $2000 50mm prime or a $2500 85mm prime.

@@DustinAbbottTWI That's true, it just seems a little odd, like the RF 35 1.8(a pretty okay lens), I'm sure it does make things a little more accessible in the price range of most however, I'd think it would make more sense to purchase a 70-200 f/4 or 2.8 IS USM(secondhand/grey market) for basically the same price or a non IS, with still good image quality and cheap, get better image quality aswell, this lens is just in a confusing sector especially when the cameras for them cost $1000 - $2000+. But that's just me.

While that's true regarding the price - a 70-200 is not a very good travel lens. A lens that goes from 24-240mm, however, is fantastic for that work. People have different needs than just superlative image quality.

RF mount is actually meant to be (also) cheap. Canon RP is the cheapest current full-frame digital camera of all times.
