The problem with canon right now is the closed RF system. I chose Sony a few months ago, despite preferring the Canon. Many better performing lens options in the budget friendly segment.

The problem with Sony is the tiny 46mm mount. Sony needs a new mount like Canon and Nikons 52mm. My current fav lens is the Samyang 10mm EF rectilinear. This lens cznnot work on the Sony mount due vignetting. The even the sony 12mm vignettes with ibis on. The Canon RF glass is sharp, and I can use 300 EF lenses on my R5. Sony does not offer what I need.- the Sony mount is just too small.

As much as I love Canon bodies, I am very averse to the direction that Canon is taking towards lens design. They serve the professional market very well, albeit heavy lenses, but hobbyists are served with lenses having average built, protruding lenses, noisy motors, meddling AF performance and relying heavily on digital corrections. There is no middle ground, and it may take a long time for them to serve the this market. I am glad to have sold off the R5 and RF lenses before their stance on 3rd party lenses became public.

Hi Mitch, I love the photography community and how strong the views are and the passion, outstanding, as seen in the comments ! 👍 Honestly after almost 40 years with Nikon when I moved to digital Canon had the edge, but these days as somebody that’s done their share of weddings & events I’m pretty much of the view that any of the major systems would have more than enough capability in the camera and the available lens to exceed my ability to exploit them. Now more than ever the only limiting factor is the person taking the photo. The 24 is a pretty handy focal length which I guess is why many zooms start there although not so many (any ?) start at 1.8 !! Keep up the good work , I love how you RU-vidrs pull the pin and lob the opinion grenade out into the world 😄

I have a feeling Canon is assuming more people with the R7 and R10 will be using this lens which would make that corner performance moot as it is a cropped photo. Using this on a FF as long as you know its there its just a matter of composing the shot with a small crop in mind if the corners bother you that much. Video, as you said is where this lens is really going to shine. I will be using it for my talking head piece on my channel moving forward.

The reason it appears sharper in corners than the Sigma Art are twofold: - with the RF, you're not actually looking at the corner, it's cropped (and horribly distorted). -The Sigma is an adapted EF lens so it has to "rear focus" the image a much greater distance due to the longer flange distance. This will make the corners much softer, especially on wider angle lenses. It's just physics. If Sigma were permitted to make native RF lenses with a closer rear element, this would change.

I just published my first review of this lens, I'm also on the GC :) Take a look, I took pictures at every aperture (1 stop intervals). It's def not perfect but it's heaps better than the 24-240 and 24-105 that I have and way sharper at the same apertures. the 24-240 especially doesnt even 'fit' my full frame sensor (I have the R5C) with black spots at the corners and the 24-105 same but less. I think with Canon you really don't get 'perfect' lenses unless you pay north of $2000... INSANE money. Btw, the autofocus in video mode at least (the R5C has a different video mode compared to your cameras because they use the Cine camera line video firmware) is worse than the 24-105/24-240 - despite the 24-105 also being an STM lens. It's twice as slow at least and doesn't always work as well well. I had times when it would track my eye but won't actually focus on it, like its in 'half MF mode' despite being in AF, restarting fixed it, and also sometimes it starts focusing wayyyyy in on something that doesn't exist and I have to use the ring to 'show it' where the focus should be. that happened today in Broadbiatch when I took a video of a drag show in cameleon lounge bar.

By the time their 1.2 L’s are going to come out, Sony will be ready for a refresh of their GM’s. Either Canon has to nail them perfect or Sony will just do a refresh right after with something slightly sharper. I think Sony is playing defensive right now it’s a smart move, let the competition release their product and they can refresh right after to compete. I’m honestly thinking of switching to Sony from Canon because of this. Both platforms are neck in neck when it comes to their bodies and features. The issue with canon is their lenses. Sony is currently updating and refreshing making GM II’s while canon still slowly making their base set. The new Sony 24-70 GMII is killer, with their 16-35 GMII replacement coming up next. Meanwhile it wouldn’t make sense for Canon to be refreshing any RF lenses to outperform the new Sony’s coming out because they don’t have the lineup complete yet. Sony seems to be one step ahead at the current moment. I just wish the A7iv didn’t have the 4k crop and that gives the R6 the one up for an all around hybrid.

According to your comparison, I'd say this Sigma is a DISASTER (for shooting stills). Which doesn't surprise me at all - I am with Nikon (since 1980s), and, as far as it goes with third party glass makers, Sigma always was the worst for me. Up until now I tried many such lenses, and Tokina, Vivitar and Tamron proved to be, in general, much better than Sigma, in terms of quality vs pricing.

I picked up the RF24 last week and I’m pretty satisfied with it. Also Canon is using the same roadmap as they did with the EF lenses back in 1986. They started out with affordable lenses in the beginning and introduced higher end lenses five to seven years later. They are ding the same thing with the RF mount.

Why do they do this to their users? Marketing strategy for their users for not buying third party lenses at the most? I myself realize it when I'm looking for Zeiss Batis/Loxia even the Sigma for RF mount they aren't coming with 😄 and changed my mind to change my Canon R6 to Sony A7IV. Is that what Canon wants to? 😄

Great news is it is at digidirect at $849 today. CoMpared to $999 a month ago at launch, $150 off so soon is pretty decent. I ordered one. To be honest, Samyang 24mm F1.8 on E mount is about the same price a bit sharper in corner and better at coma, but RF 24mm is not far off. Sigma 24ART is much more expensive.

Wow. What a piece of worthless garbage. I'm so disappointed in Canon lately. I purchased the RF 35mm 1.8 last Christmas and was so disappointed (slow noisy focus, protruding element, cheap) that I ended up with the sigma ART trio (35,50,85) and am completely tickled pink (adapted). Since Canon has decided that no third parties can make glass for RF, I'm done with them. Hey - did you know that I can send sigma my lenses and they change the mount to Sony-E? Neat! I'm doing that! Bye Canon with your inferior, expensive, proprietary system which is now completely anti-consumer.

Hello and thank you for this video. A few days ago I bought this RF 24mm f1.8 Macro is stm lens. I find this lens fantastic ! It is in my opinion much better than the RF 16mm that I had the opportunity to test and that I did not like at all! This new 24mm RF has very little distortion and very little purple fringing on high contrast ! On my Canon RP camera, for Landscapes and Street Photo, it will be a very good complement to my RF 50 f1.8 which I use for Portraits !... I can't wait for DxO to provide us with the RAW+JPEG Correction Profiles for use in DxO Photolab Friendships, Philgood...😜

You said prime. That is not an official quality prime. Canon has no RF primes at all in a f1.4 or f1.8. in my book It would have a red ring on a quality prime lens and the price would be much higher. If Canon would stop banning third party brands from making us primes, I would get one. Not sure if Canon is or ever will make an RF prime at f1.8 or faster.

Having both Fuji and Leica cameras, I just got an almost new EOS R for an insane low price. I simply couldn't resists, since I still miss my old 6D. Also got at used RF 50mm 1.8. While the camera (and sensor) is fantastic, I simply don't understand the purpose of the new RF mount. All the lenses seems huge and bulky. As most test states, there are not that much better IQ on RF lenses either, compared to the EF mount or even smaller modern Sony mount. I still have some EF lenses from the past. But with that big adapter, it feels silly to put a EF 28mm or 100mm prime on the R. Why did they make this mount? And also read that pancake lenses will not be an option, because of the RF design....

To be fair I'm not really a fan of 24mm on FF anymore. No 24mm is really great and its a really difficult lens to create. Where I think the 24mm will be a bigger hit is on the R7 and R10 APS-C cameras where the 24mm will have a similar FOV to the 35mm on FF. Plus that should help eliminate most of those ugly corners. I have the 24-240 lens which has similar performance at 24mm and while far from great its ok for the few times I actually need t logo that wide. 35mm tends to be wide enough for me in most cases so this is likely one of the last lenses I would get unless I do pick up a APS-C backup body.

Why anyone would choose Canon over Sony in 22 is beyond me. Lenses and lens selection aren’t even comparable. Even the expensive RF primes have sluggish AF. Was surprised how slow the RF 50 1.2 was after using Sonys. And flat out banning 3rd party is mind boggling. Nikon took the better route with their 1.8s.
@MitchLally

I’m leaning this way too as a long time Canon fan boy. Canon have autofocus game on lock and video specs / colours in their higher end cams but that’s about it and the downsides - expensive lenses and lack of options because of their need to keep other players off the mount annul those positives.

@@MitchLally I would usually say invest in the system and wait for the lenses….but that was years ago now. They’ve had time and shown they’re really going budget budget tier or second mortgage tier. With still no pro level 24/35. And not allowing tamron/sigma to at least fill the gap. Not to mention their sensors are still at least a generation behind, R3 was a huge step in the right direction tho. I love canon UI/UX but I just can’t deny the Sony ecosystem. May revisit in 3 or so years.

Canon will probably allow 3rd parties in to the system sooner than later. Nikon took 3 years to allow 3rd parties to license the mount and make lenses with AF. Canon, being the dominant one on the market, will probably take longer than that (the RF mount is 4 years old).

Digital correction is the future, whether we like it or not. That's how smartphones catching up with cameras. It should not be a surprise. IMO people in the comments who aren't patient for RF lens selection should just go for other systems, instead of complaining non stop/bash Canon. If there is enough people to do that. Canon will change their business strategy.
