I own the DS and it’s beautiful

Do you ever miss the standard, or do you feel pretty set in the choice?

Own standard RF 85/1.2 and as for me if I would like to have more smoooooth bokeh then I’ll attach K&F Concept Nano-X Black Diffusion 1/4 filter

@@DanYosua in all honesty. The IBIS on the R5 allows me to compensate with shutter speed rather than ISO for the loss of light. Sometimes. Not always. But also the noise coming out the R5 really isn’t that bad. The bokeh is so unique you can’t find it anywhere else especially for video imo.

@@DanYosua also lol. It took months for the lens to come in the mail and I’m set in the choice. Too much effort to switch at this point.

This is such a tough choice because honestly I am constantly looking for ways to set my work apart from other photographers. DS for me and that is solely because I have a canon R3 so low noise with higher ISO isn’t a problem. If I didn’t have the R3 non-DS 100%.

As I've been shooting with my 85 this fall, there have definitely been instances with messy leaves and branches in the background where I'm missing the DS look.

I think most people comparing these lenses are exposed to mere-exposure effect - in short, people tend to prefer things that they are familiar with.

Yeah if I were going to spend the coin, I'd probably get the DS...outside here in TX is Bright with a capital B, and even with the reduced light intake, its still darn fast and frankly for most if not all event photos in dark situations, you prolly should have a flash anyway. For headshots the benefits are less, but Canon did say the DS is the sharpest lens (yes sharper than the standard 85) they've ever made.

I do like the more organic look of the bokeh from the DS, but I do want that light gathering from the regular version.
@DanYosua

Haha it's tough. F/2 is still pretty fast, but somehow I couldn't shake the idea that I was being "cheated" out of light 🤣
@andrewulloa4832

@@DanYosua the speed does not change. Just the intake of light. You can bump up the ISO if need be or lower the shutter speed. But it’s still an F1.2
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 2 года назад
@@andrewulloa4832 right that's a good clarification - when I said "f/2" above, just short hand for "f1.2 that acts like the f/2". Besides the coating, as far as I understand, they are otherwise identical physically.

I'll eventually pick up the 85 for specifically shooting in low light. So, no DS for this photographer.

I still have the Samyang, but that's what I'd be doing if I ever revisit getting a Canon 85mm.

@@DanYosuaLast time my R6 gave a F00 on the Samyang especially after the latest firmware update. How is your samy doin’?
@DanYosua

😞 that’s no good. I haven’t been recommending this enthusiastically anymore for this reason, and it’s one of the reasons I’m not thrilled with Canon. Mines working fine, but I’ve kept my R6 all the way back on 1.4.0 when they enabled dual card video recording. No issues seemingly on the R8, but again, I have left that at 1.0.0. I’m planning to run my R6 into the ground, so as long as my other main Canon lenses are working well, I plan not to update firmware anymore. If they ever remove the 30m record limit, I’ll probably pick that firmware version over the Samyang and be sad about it 🥲

If I recall, 1.8 disables high speed shooting? Perhaps after that, it gets bricked?

Samyang / Rokinon 85 F1.4 has good Bokeh and is a hell lot cheaper and lighter. So unless someone is fixated on the brand, that extra money gives minimal value. Point of diminishing return as the saying goes ! 😅
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 2 года назад
Agreed. For those using this all time for paid portrait and event work, I get it... but that's certainly not me right now. That's for sure 🤣

@@DanYosua I'm still confused on pairing 24-105 non L or the tiny 16 F2.8 along with 50 1.8 and 100-400 for R6 A light kit to build around. Love your videos by the way. It's chill, and in a good way of explaining what works ❤️
@458Avinash

@@DanYosua Also I'd be confused with the Samyang 85 or Canon 85 Macro (but that's only going to come after the 70-200 F4 L .I was already in love with the lens and your video convinced me to make that my first L lens. Was thinking of the 24-105 f4 L before that, but the non L seem to have good quality and for focals 50 and above, I'll have faster lenses anyway.
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 2 года назад
It sounds like you're thinking about the right things. If you don't think you really need the f4 for the 24-105, the non-L is pretty solid. I was surprised. I would miss the f4 from 70-105 probably but it's quite capable for landscape and you won't notice the darker apertures much if using it like that.
@highlyunprofessionalreviews
And they don't have crazy loud video AF.
