Just ordered both of these for my new R6. Both for $499!? How could you not. Will compliment my 24-105 L and 100-400 nicely.

Hello and thank you for this video. I had the RF 16mm f2.8 for 2 days in testing, didn't like and didn't keep. The 16mm RF is finally really too wide angle for me and too much distortion, even straightening the lines after you have to crop. I have on the other hand the RF 50 mm f1.8 with my Canon RP, and I find that they form a Combo. perfect ! I'm waiting for Canon to release an RF 24 or 28mm for the landscapes, in the meantime I use my adorable little Pancake EF40mm f2.8 stm + RF-EF adapter ring for the landscapes and the Strret photo, and I take the RF 50mm f1.8 for tighter portraits. Sincerely, Philgood

Ya, the 16mm lens is much more of a lens for a specific audience, the 50mm is more of a “one size fits all” type of lens. Glad you enjoy the 50mm though. That and the RP are very fun to shoot with!

I love my RF 50 1.8! :) The RF 16mm 2.8 seems like a cool lens for getting to know that focal range, but I find myself constantly switching focal ranges with my RF 15-35 2.8. I would have prefered something like a 20 2.0 or 24. 1.8 lens.

I definitely think a 24mm prime will be in the pipeline at some point as well

I am using the 16mm on the R7 camera. Using jpg, the in-camera processing comes out very good for the type of jpeg shots which I and most people take. I believe the 16mm lens is more or less 13mm and in-camera processing finalizes the image to about 16mm. I call it my lightweight jpeg lens for a walk-around setup for general jpeg shots where RAW would be a waste of card capacity and processing time. I also own the 50mm lens for the R7. I find this lens is too in your face leaving little or no room for resizing the photographs. Often I find there is not enough space to get far enough back to get that extra area needed around the photographed subject using the 50mm lens. I have two full-frame cameras with a fair range of prime and telephoto lenses and I find this type of setup an arm breaker when you are walking around for some hours carrying a full-frame camera with a lens. The R7 plus the 16mm is much more comfortable to carry and you still have the option of switching to raw instead of jpeg if something special turns up having two cards installed. Using the R7, on processing gives you a generous opportunity to reframe the image using the 16mm lens.

Thanks for making this video, really useful and really high quality. I've just got a new Cannon R10. I want to put it on a tripid and film myself talking at relatively close range, effectively doing talking head shots to camera. Am I right in saying the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM is better for this due to it's wide angle rather than the Canon RF 50 mm F1.8 STM?

Been using my R6 a lot lately! And loving it, and I found the RF 24-105 f4 L is my favorite lens due to the range its a good all in one and I hate switching lenses on the go haha so its been good. Have you got your R6 yet?

That’s awesome! And that’s a great lens too! Glad you’re enjoying it! I actually made a couple *interesting* camera purchases the last few weeks. Not to be too much of a tease, but I’m going to be talking about them on the channel very soon 🧐

I’m new to photography and my camera still but I’m Considering the 16mm for my canon r10 primarily for shooting action sports photos and videos. I do have a gimbal as well, but seems like for my r10 this is the best fisheye option I have??

Just bought a used Eos R and a used RF 50mm 1.8, I think the 50 is way more versatile than the 16 and is a solid first lens I got it as a cheap street/portrait lens and now I'm hoping to save up for a 35mm

I am bummed the Canon RF 16mm f2.8 turned out to be a bust. I was really looking forward to it. It is constantly panned on the photography channels I follow. I guess I’ll checkout the Rokinon/Samyang rf af 14mm. Sounds like maybe a better option.
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 2 года назад
I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a bust. If anyone was expecting ‘L series’ lens quality at nifty fifty pricing, it certainly isn’t that. Ultra Wide is already optically more complex to design than a medium focal length like 50mm. I think this RF 16mm is a cool and fun lens for anyone who wants an ultra wide, doesn’t want to break the bank, wants a compact lens, doesn’t need to deliver high quality ultra wide photos for gallery prints, or any combination of those. What were you wanting from the lens personally?

I have the 50 getting the 16 waiting to see holiday prices before I buy. I think the 16 world be great for large group shots when it shoot weddings
@JustinMyersPhoto
@JustinMyersPhoto 2 года назад
I would be wary about using the 16mm for group shots. It would give a ton of distortion and it won’t look very flattering for your subjects. If you’re looking for something a bit wider that doesn’t have so much distortion, I would suggest the RF 35mm lens, which is on sale right now, so the price is pretty close to the 16mm lens. The 35mm lens has much better image quality than the 16mm and 50mm lenses. If you’re interested, I have affiliate links to the 35mm (it will show the holiday sale price) in the description for the video What camera body are you using the lenses with at the moment?
