WOW! The film quality is so much better than digital, it’s amazing!

To anyone wondering, If you rate a film lower than the box says. Like here with 800 film and setting the light meter to 640. That means you overexpose the film. If you intend to correct it in processing, you are "pulling" the film. Usually results in slightly lower contrast but getting cleaner noise floor (noise on film being grain). Though. I'm not sure how much effect it would be in this case as its not even a full stop of pulling (a full stop being rating it as 400 instead of 640) You can do the opposite. Rate the film higher. Setting the light meter to 1600 or 3200 and correct it at processing. In that case you are underexposing by a stop and with the correction in processing you get a more contrasty image with a higher noise floor (again, the noise being grain) and at the lab it's known as "pushing" the film a stop (1600) or two (3200) or more.

8:55 This camera is acturally a Canon Scoopic 16 M, and the "M" stands for macro. Unlike most of the 8mm cameras, Scoopic 16 M's macro is set by a dedicated ring independent of the zoom ring. It is very easy to accidentally set the macro mode on without knowing, causing an awful focus shift during zooming.

awesome, I love the look of the expired film, and how it portrays the points of light like the LED displays on the synths, that flicker....

KOTV in Tulsa was a “Bolex house” in the 70s but somehow we got 2 Scoopics. Interesting shooters. One got stolen and the other given to the University of Tulsa after KOTV went all video.

Thanks for that John. Brought back memories from back in the 70's when I was in H.S. and working as an assistant Camera Man for a local TV station that had a couple of Scopics for B-Roll. I also remember having to strap on a battery belt and that the original batteries being Lead-Acid?

The Ektachrome shots looked SOOOO much like Super8, rather than 16mm :P Well, the only thing that gave it away that it wasn't Super 8 was the steady picture, which you don't really get with normal Super8 cameras. Would have been great if there would have been a Scoopic soundcamera which would have recorded optical sound on the side of the filmstrip that has no sprocket holes.

Awesome video, very informative. It fills me with joy and optimism to see people keeping the medium alive. I was wondering, how did you manage to sync the audio with the footage at the start of the video, did you invest in a crystal sync motor? Or is that it working without a crystal sync motor? Thanks a lot!

Old tech now they have digital cameras that can record video into a solid state digital film cartridges. The footage can be copied into a computer that will let you view the footage instantly like a modern day Polavision tech.

But canon lenses of the day weren't sharp due to lower parameters of resolution in manufacture. This applies to their cine and still cam lenses. Outstanding were angenieux, ektars and switar, the last having so strong color saturation that scenes became unnaturally colored. Nothing beat the sharpness of the fixed 10mm angenieux on kodachrome!

Totally agree, Canon lenses way over rated, very soft when used wide open, applies to the 16mm scoopic and super 8 range of cameras.

Hi, great video. Do you think this could be used for feature-length films? I know in the video you said this was mostly used for news segments and it looks like there are extra steps to getting a 400 ft roll into the camera. I am exploring other options like the arri BL 16mm . I'm not sure if I should go with that one or the scoopic.
@FilmPhotographyProject
@FilmPhotographyProject 11 месяцев назад
If you're planning on recording dialog on the set, then I recommend a Arri SR (might be cheaper top rent than buy). Arri BL is a great option for non-sound b-rolls shots. Both accept 400 ft loads of film . Not sure of the Scoopic offered a 400 ft option. Otherwise, the K3, Bolex and other cameras only take 100 ft loads - which is ALOT of film changing if you're shooting a feature + they're noisy (as is the Scoopic). GHOUL SCHOOL (available to watch on Tube TV - tubitv.com/home ) was shot on the Arri SR (dialog shots), 16mm BL (silent B-roll shots) Good luck with your project. - Mike

@@FilmPhotographyProject Hi, thanks for responding. I've never used a film camera so I'm a complete beginner. The film I want to shoot contains mostly dialog, so being able to block out the noise is important to me. Is the only option really the arri SR or are there others that are relatively cheap and can handle dialog? Aren't all of these cameras really noisy? What is the best way to record dialog and film with 16mm?
@FilmPhotographyProject
@FilmPhotographyProject 11 месяцев назад
As a beginner I recommend that you shoot some short subject reels using a cheap wind-up camera (like the Keystone A Series cameras - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PsAdRbwLKGE.htmlsi=jrZJsfDgW9PXD52U ) before embarking on a big project. Cheapest option is to rent your gear (for your big project).

Hello. I wanted to ask, if the indoor lighting is white, especially nowadays when we can set the WB of the RGB lights, do we use daylight balanced film? Or would the ASA be too less for the right exposure indoors?

@801ruben1
@801ruben1 4 года назад
Actually the lens is parfocal. As pretty much any zoom lens designed for prosumer or professional cinema cameras (real cinema cameras) lenses won't change aperture or focus point while zooming in or out. You don't believe me? read pages 19 and 20 of the user manual of the Scoopic M available for free online. This guys lens needs to be collimated.

Not a sound camera - no sound capability. Also motor is not crystal sync so any sound recorded separately will be "wild". The dialog recorded for this video was very difficult to sync up - had to adjust every few words.

Hi Webster. The test was done a few years ago. I don't have the stock number written and the film is in storage. If you Google Kodak Vision 800T, the spec sheet comes up. I think Kodak only made it as a Vision (first generation) film.

@@michaelraso Seems like it was discontinued in 2004. It looks great! From the Cinematography forum, Vision2 500T 7218 came out and when pushed one-stop to 1000 ASA it's no grainier than the 800T. So I guess that kinda replaced it.

The Cinema Products CP-16 used mag stripe film. The Bach Auricon was available in mag or single unilateral optical versions, both with and without the noise reduction shutter. Without the noise reduction shutter, the soundtrack was half black, half clear-ish when no modulation was present. With it, the clear-ish area narrowed to a thin stripe. But the fidelity of the optical sound was mid-fi at best. Here's a link to a demonstration with the noise reduction shutter. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6qpE5aeG5cY.html
