@@chcomes it really depends what device is printing it and how you were viewing the original, and on what screen. There's so many variables involved, you'd need a colour management system to really make a fair comparison. Otherwise what I see on my screen is going to be very different to what you see on yours. Even the same device can have different brightness etc.
Hey, Thanks for the video! I'm deciding between this model and the older CP1300. could you maybe tell me if the CP 1300 also gives you the option to make satin finish prints? or is that only an option on the CP 1500? are you happy with the satin finish results ? Kind regards, Vince
@@dailyreflectionsv to be honest I can't remember the options on the CP1300, but overall the print quality is very similar as they share much the same engine. I generally print high gloss for most of mine.
I had been waiting for the updated model since watching your CP1300 review a year or so ago. I recently bought one and have been very happy with it. The per print pricing is actually significantly lower than typical labs here in Japan (about 25 yen per L size print vs 40 yen in a lab) which is a nice bonus. I printed about 200 images after purchasing and do wish that the app was a little more "workflow" oriented. There is a lot of repetition to select options and images (e.g., scrolling through lists of albums on your phone), and you are often kicked back out to the home screen to do it all again. Very typical of Canon (and I dare say Japanese) software design, though.
Thanks for the feedback, yes I agree, the app is designed for one print at a time and can get laborious for multiple prints at once. That's interesting your lab costs are high in Japan. Some of ours are too, but I was more referring to online labs which can be much cheaper per print, but also have delivery charges and of course waiting times.
I have the previous model and found that converting B&W shots to CMYK first gives much better results. Of course that has to be done from a computer or iPad with a decent image editor.
Long-time SELPHY user here... Obviously the high print quality is the first reason people would want to buy this kind of printer, but the other compelling reason, and it was barely touched on in this video, is that these dye-sub printers can be put away and pulled out many months later and the "ink" (actually dye) works just as well as it would have when brand new... The significance of this, at least for me, is that I can print all my documents on my color laser printer, but if I want to print a real photo I can do that reliably on the SELPHY, which was certainly not the case when I was using a high quality inkjet photo printer, since those printers hate to be neglected. I only wish Canon would come out with a larger format SELPHY printer, but actually the 4x6 size really is much more useful than I thought it would be when I originally bought my first SELPHY printer. In short: Dye-sub printers are the perfect complement to color (or B&W) laser printers.
I also agree. Used the Selphy printers since 2004. Don't get me wrong, they're great. But it's sad to see that Canon didn't change the actually print engine since then. They're mainly just putting the printer into a new housing and update display and software. I also ever wished, they bring out a slightly bigger or faster version.
@@derfotomann7241 Look at the good side backwards compatibility of paper and cartridges. Changing it every couple years would cause more problems with that aspect.
That's the only reason why I kept this printer. It has a lousy limited paper compartibility, and I would return it and buy the Epson compact printer had that printer had dye-sub instead of inkjet. It worked better now as a test print before I sent to a lab. The costs of each prints are about the same as the store and I don't have to deal with uneven borders, shrink-to-fit and cropped out. I really hope I can find compartible photos in store instead of having to order it online when I went travelling.
I like my CP1300 and the method of printing it uses. I wish there was something on the market that offered at least 8x12 sizes or a very low maintenance printing alternative. If anyone knows of one, please let me know!
@@bfs5113 I have a fargo from the seventy's it was a beautiful 11x14 inch dye sub process printer like like a huge Selfphy making 11x14 inch glossy's so sad and mad that Fargo stop supporting it totally now any thing over5x7 inch is is ink jet junk I hate I have to use with al its expensive ink and dry out problems if you don't use it daily
I think you need to have Jimmy Walker of "Dynomite!" fame [ "Good Times" sitcom in USA. ] to do a "Dino Bytes!" shout out for your other channel, that would be funny. Almost purchased a 1300 a while back, glad I held off. Thanks for the review, cheers!
Hah! That would be fun, possibly expensive! (interesting documentary about that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wwng7YxwwoM.html)
Very helpful review. I am looking to replace a very old Sony dye-sub printer that died over the weekend. This looks to be the only printer of its kind on the market now.
@@cameralabs indeed. I was surprised given how useful they for small snap printing as well as easy to use. The Canon's consumables look very similar to the Sony. I've ordered one and will see what it is like.
Hey Gordon I loved your video! I wanted to ask do you have a link for the spcific battery pack that works for the CP1500, I can only find descriptions that fit the CP 1330 like the Canon Battery Pack NB-CP2LI? Keep up the great work!
Apparently the Canon NB-CP2LI also works on the CP-1500 according to the Canon website. There are a variety of 3rd party options too, but YMMV. Let me know how you get on.
Thanks for the review as always :). Just one questions remains for me, are these printer are in the same ballpark when it comes to quality? I really like the option to print from my SD Card but I don't know if printer like the Liene offering better picture quality?
Just got mine today. It won't print "large" photos with the paper that came with it. 4x6 size I believe. Am I meant to buy a different size paper or something?
No sorry, I see your laptop is connected to your computer monitor, what do I need to connect my laptop to my computer as well. Sorry for the misunderstanding … oh and looking at the selphy today as well. Looks like fun. Thanks again
@@audreytodd-davis3114 I don't know what you mean - can you tell me what time in the video this happens? My laptop isn't connected to a monitor or a computer. Do you mean when I record the screen to show a web page? That's just a screen recording.
I think it's probably a similar printer in terms of the hardware. Maybe it's your images, or what you're printing from? Perhaps try connecting a different device to it? I'd speak to canon though i've not reviewed that one.
I got one after seeing your review of it, but mine seemed to have a defect. It would print with a line going across the pictures, but it was brand new out of box and didn't seem to be dirty or have issues I could identify. when I went to return it, they told me it's a common problem users have. Is there any way to fix it? I might get another one if there Is a way because the prints are gorgeous.
@@cameralabs i went through the whole sample pack, and an extra pack i had gotten for it, and the line was still there. i asked about it in store and they said they didn't know what caused it, and when i talked to canon themselves they kinda just suggested getting another one. it's such a shame because the pictures are so pretty! a line right across them is hard to ignore
@@angelie5794 yeah, that sounds like a problem with the unit itself. But again the one I had also suffered from a line, but not sure if it's a bad as yours. Annoying certainly.
@@cameralabs ¿Did you ever get a second unit to see if the issue persisted between units? i might try it and hope for the best 🥲 also, i realize this video is from a while ago so thank you for even answering!
You mentioned there are paper options that have a sticker backing on them, but I can't find this paper anywhere. Do you know what model paper I should search for? Thank you!
Some cameras can be connected directly to the printer. otherwise if it uses SD memory, you can insert a card. Or you can copy images to your computer or phone and print from those. Didn't I mention that in the video?
I used to have a small printer on set for clients to see the day's shoot progress after taping to foam core. Fell out of doing that a few years ago but just recently saw another photographers' work up on the wall (we own a studio we rent out when I'm not shooting) and was so impressed with the quality of the prints. I think it was this printer. Need to get back doing this on certain jobs since I think clients really enjoy seeing their day's work come together with little prints.
Gordon, thanks for this fine review. I know it takes a lot of work and I appreciate it. Also thanks for being so diligent in reading and responding to comments. Good job!
I recently got one (CP1500) and absolutely love it. The quality (resolution and color reproduction) is more than enough I believe the value for money, for the fun you get from printing at home is amazing!
I got the CP1300, but haven't used it for about a year. Now I want to take it out of storage and print some pictures... thanks (again) for inspiring me.
Thank for your video! I have Canon Selphy 1500 cp, I have a problem that the photos came out dark and the white colour in photos turnes to yellow when I want to print it!!! I didn’t change the photos settings or anything. The photos quality are very good on my phone ! I coudn’t find any soulotion anywhere 😢😢😢
Great review, gives Fuji something to think about as they need a 6x4 option! The Lack of a touch screen is a pain, but in this world of smartphones, I guess its not needed on the device?
There's the Fuji PrinCiao Smart 2 but it's unobtanium outside of SE Asia :( Funnily enough, from a quick squizz at some images, it looks like it uses the exact same ink/paper combo as the Selphy in a simpler form factor (built in battery).
thanks for the video, I was looking at getting a home photo printer to get some photos physical, I lost too many to switching phones causing them to get blurry (not sure if I explained it right). Price wise it seems to be perfect and your review helped me make the decision, thanks for helping me decide on my first ever printer
Great video as usual. I've owned several of these CP series printers, and every one of them has developed the same issue where it fails to recognize the print tray, right after advancing the paper through and wasting one picture's worth of ink medium. It's happened to me with two of them in a row, both brand new, within 50 prints. I found that I could spray contact cleaner and compressed air into the sides of the area where the tray latches into the printer and it helps. Or I can also manually hold the tray downward, there's a trick to it, and you only have to do this til it starts printing the first color pass. Then you can let go and it will finish. So my question is, did you have any troubles with the print tray failing to be recognized or the printer producing errors about it? It does seem like they redesigned the tray for this model, it looks sturdier than the previous ones.
I have used 3-4 CP series and never encountered such an issue, beside the printer stopped working. One trick to prevent wasting a set of ink is to remove ink before switching it off and load ink AFTER switching it on.
I ordered one after seeing this. I was thinking of a smaller one for on the road. But honestly, it takes time to select the good image , swap it to the printer after processing. I guess too long for the person still being around me. So i will give them later on after a home print
Recently bought a CP1300. From what I can tell, the CP1500 and CP1300 have the same quality (I believe they have the same quality since Canon first introduced those print cartridges, generations ago). The CP1500 has more phone printing options, and is 6 seconds faster at printing with the glossy finish. The CP1300 does almost the same, however give you more buttons wich can help when printing without a PC / smartphone (and I do that a lot). Thank you for your review.
I must say the fewer buttons makes the cropping and zooming a lot more tedious. And since the print quality is the same I see no reason to upgrade to a CP1500.
I've owned a Canon Selphy for a few years now and for sure it gives very decent results. My issue however has always been the cost, I've since moved to an Epson Ecotank printer for my small prints. I can print up to A4 size, I'm not just stuck with 6 X 4 sized prints. Of course portability wise this little Canon has it licked. I've also got an Instax printer too, again not particularly cheap to print to and my printer only does the mini prints which are considerably smaller than the Selphy. Nice review Gordon 👍
@@cameralabs Indeed, and one of the lesser promoted aspects of these sublimation prints is they are resistant to water damage so will likely last many years even if they are not kept in an album ☺️
Hey! I have an Epson Ecotank as well and I try to print photos/art prints with it but it always gives off a very blue tint/hue to my pictures. Does it happen to you too, or is it something you were able to fix?
@@opmenglish413 Never had any issues with mine, however I produce my own custom ICC profiles for the " non Epson " papers that I use. Assuming you are using Epson photo paper and you select the correct media type in the print driver ( so if you use glossy Epson paper be sure to select glossy paper as the type you use in the print dialog driver ). This will ensure the driver selects the correct ICM profile for your paper and colours should be essentially spot on. Are you printing through Lightroom/Photoshop or via Epson's own software. You might be inadvertently double profiling ( i.e.telling Photoshop to control colour but also selecting the driver to also do it, it should be one or the other never both! ). If you are printing on 3rd party papers then all bets are off because your printer doesn't know the exact properties of the paper you are using and so will lay down ink based on the media type you selected in the driver. I would suggest buying a pack of Epson Glossy paper ( any one, doesn't matter ), select glossy as the media type in the driver dialog and ensure whatever software you are using to print from is set so that the printer ( not the application ) is controling colour. You should then get more or less perfect prints with no colour cast. The only other thing that might be happening is you've put the wrong colour ink into the tanks, easily done 😮 If you have then you'll never get it rectified without draining the tanks entirely and starting again 😕
@dunnymonster Thank you so much for the detailed response!! I didn't realise it could have been the third party paper! Yes, I'm using different brands so that's most likely it. I'll buy some epson paper and try those out, thank you again!
I'd really like to see a comparison of the print quality from this vs the CP1300. Something tells me there probably isn't much if any difference, and that it's primarily just a new shell to keep sales up.
@@cameralabs I think one aspect you 'glossed' over is the difference in the print finish. I like the idea that you can choose satin instead of gloss, or even potentially choose patterns in the finish, but I've never been able to see examples in practice. One thing I think would be nice is if you did high resolution scans of the prints and included the files, so that people can see the print quality close up. It is a shame they don't have matte paper for these, because that would add a lot to its capabilities.
In theory, airprint means it should just work directly from Apple devices BUT I found with the Android version that the print didn't always come out how I wanted it to. Using the app will give you more options, but if you don't mind wasting a sheet or two experimenting, it could be worth a try. let me know how you get on!
I just bought this model and I'm not all that happy with it. All of my prints so far have horizontal lines across them - I'm hoping I can figure out the problem and get that fixed because I've heard such good things about this little guy. My biggest complaint though is the fact that the paper tray is either sticking out the front and getting knocked around my desk or I have to put it away somewhere, away from the printer. A little slip tray in the back or even underneath where you could store the two pieces together would be fantastic.
Hey man!!! Did you ever find the solution for those lines? I have just bought the printer and have the same issue with horizontall line acroos every print and some say it's normal and other says it isn't
The 2 biggest pain points of these Selphy's were i) WiFi setup and crapware Canon would force you to install on your PC, and ii) slippage of the rubber intake wheels for the paper feed. I hope they've been remedied.
thanks for a great video...i am sort of lost...is this a type of printer which I have to use the Canons...specific paper? or is it possible to use a different brand paper for printing? like a typical inkjet printer? cheers
Does it has third party (special)ink support and paper support, or canon as always push anti consumer practice like on their another printers and scanners?
@@cameralabs Yes, but they had recommended their ink even on all previous printers, but it do not stopped them to programm printers to refuse to work with third party ink or strait up to block scan feature in the scanner-printer if you do not use only canons catriges and ink. I had such a problem with canons products in the past, thats why very careful about it, thanks for review.
@@warhamburger40k81 yeah I'm not sure what happens if you try to use third party media with it. I'd assume you have to and base your decision on that worse-case scenario.
I have an inkjet printer that does photos but I hate the outcome of them and even with the special photo paper they come out bad and they take forever to dry! I'll definitely get this one. I want to start scrapbooks! Thank you so much for your review and all of the wonderful useful I formation💕
Omg. I just got mine today. The images are horrifically warm (and yellow). Are yours overly warm with a yellow cast? I'm going to have to return it. It's so unnaturally warm and yellow the photos are hard to look at. My whites are not white at all!
Sounds like a problem with the ink ribbon, you could see my photos in the video and they looked correctly colour-balanced. Maybe an issue with your app settings or images?
I have cp1500 exactly same issue, use vivid mode and increase light also turn off the optimize for the skin tone, it helps a bit, but ligher lost a bit of details.
Okay, I just bought one but is it just me or does anyone else has this issue where there are white vertical lines on the print, it's not super visible but noticeable if you focus on the photo. Also, as a 300dpi printer, printing a photo from a 56megapixel canon 5dsr shouldn't be a problem! But that came out a bit blurry instead of detailed. Did I get a defective one or is it just because of the sample provided with the printer? Printing a black and white from a 24 megepixel fujifilm came out pretty nice but is that its limit - A black and white and 24mp camera?
Great review, it helped me a lot about what to buy. :) Could you please let us know more about how we can adjust color profiles. Thank you for your effort. :)
Great review Gordon. I am thinking of buying one of these printers for the intent of making passport photos. I see in your video that the printer has a guide for the face size, is that changeable for different countries, like US passports, UK passports etc? Cheers!
Hmm, I didn't realise it was a different size for different countries, I thought all passport photos started the same size. Either way, they sell this in the US, so I'm sure they have a solution for it. You may want to check with Canon though.
I wonder if it will print directly from my Lumix camera via Bluetooth? Also, would it print directly from a Sony ZV-E10? if so, this could be a brilliant little printer for family events.
Thank you Gordon! Very useful video. I was just about to buy a CP1300 to start selling photos for ID, but I will however buy a CP1500, maybe the option to print in three types of finishes will give more opportunities to play :) Because I understand that CP1300 doesn't have three finishing modes -matte/gloss?
I'm not sure, I think it might as the print hardware is essentially the same. Maybe it's a software option for the new model only? I don't know, you'd need to ask Canon.
Hi Gordon, Quick question. There is a sale of cp1300 model and it's almost half of the price of CP1500 in my local store (110gbp vs 200). Do you think I shoud go with 1300? I know that print technology is the same but wondering about the android application features. My main use case will be printing photos directly from the phone.
@@cameralabs Just seen the cp1300 video, you are just showing simple print from android option there. Is it just it for 1300? I'm wondering as I can see only one application in android store for canon sephy. Are the features restricted on older model?
“SD card is easiest” not really IMHO. An AirPrint device sitting on the Wi-Fi network everyone in the family can print to natively would seem to be the easiest to me. The 1300 supposedly supported AirPrint. Does this device? Any chance you have reviewed that specific feature? Thanks for the content!
Apparently there are some aftermarket battery options, has anybody tested these? I'd love to have something like this on battery power for company afterworks or small scale music performances.
Thanks for the review ! I have a CP1300 and while the quality is good I ALWAYS have spots on the photos that look like dust specs :( I use my dust blower and clean the cartridge thoroughly but I always end up with some spots. Do you also have such issues ?
I have heard this from other people. I think you need to keep the surroundings very clean and ideally put the printer in a box with the paper tray removed when not in use.
PLEASE HELP, I can't find the information if the Selphy CP KP-108IN Color Ink/Paper Set is compatible with the new Canon Selphy CP1500 Printer. I bought the Printer and the Color Ink/Paper Set as a Christmas gift, and can't open the boxes to try it, seller said it SHOULD be compatible, and I can't find the information to be sure. It would mean a world to me if you helped me with this
I have three of them. I also bought a third party printer definition set from Robin Wong. The printer definition software makes it easier to make great black and white and better color prints with it. The software definition has worked on cp1200 and cp1300 thus far. Expect them to work on this model too.
I noticed you can put multiple pictures on one print and in your example, 8 or 20. Are there other options, such as 4 or 6? Thank you, Gordon. Well done. A subscriber now.
Thanks! Yep, the N-up mode allows 2, 4 or 8 in a print, but all at the same size. There's also a bookmark option. The shuffle option I demonstrated with random arranging and different sizes is 8 or 20 only.
I'm actually quite impressed at how small the printer is. As well as the quality of the prints. Much better than film or ZINK imho. Dye sublimation looks like it produces the best results of any instant photo technology to my eyes. I understand that film has its charm and a certain look.....but just from an objective, purely quality assessment.....it's dye sublimation in my books. I have to seriously consider buying one of these.
This has me thinking of grabbing a small printer for use with my Ricoh GR files that I edit on my phone in LR for mobile. What would you say produces the better prints Gordon? An instax or this Canon?
I did end up ordering this. I regret not using your link. I’ll try to in the future. The app was trash with my iPhone and it did chop off part of my brother’s head with his grand baby using the Apple air print but I still liked the photo 😂
Thank you for this video. I've been going back and forth between different instant printers and i've decided to go with this one. Gordon, have you also tested the printers that use ZINK paper? The Kodak printers I see bundled with the paper is often the same cost as just the CP1500 alone. I was wondering if the lower costs and what i've heard- lower printer quality is worth it?
Playing this on the family room TV, and everyone is like “woah!! Didn’t know Flea was in to YouTubing photo gear; this is amazing”. But it’s not Flea. Still cool tho.
Amazed how cheap the device and the media are compared to Fujifilm Instax! I realise it's more "pro" but I really wish you could connect via bluetooth from one's smartphone. That's a dealbreaker for me.
Doesn't really make much sense unless you're using it as a portable printer though, and the only ones who would realistically carry it around are photographers with SD cards. Most people using these are at home with all their devices on their home networks including their printers and their phones of which can be used to print.
Hello, do you have any suggestions for increasing the print quality? My photos don’t come out nearly as well as yours do and I considered returning it, but it clearly has the capability, I’m just not sure how to increase the quality. Thank you!
In all seriousness, are the image you're printing good quality, as this could be an issue. Try printing your very best shots, or some high quality ones downloaded from, say, flickr, and see if they print any better. If they do,. then the problem is the images you're sending. If your images are good though, I don't know what to suggest as I just used all the standard settings.
