Canon Vixia HF G70 or G50 for Filming Everyday Life in 2024

I recently rented from Lensrentals.com both the Canon Vixia HF G70 and G50 in my search for a camcorder to document everyday life. Did a vlog on the G50 last time - and now it's the G70's turn. Both are amazing video cameras for capturing cinematic footage of everyday life. They could be twins because they look so similar, but the G70 does have some pretty cool upgrades. Can you tell the difference between the two sets of footage (between the G70 and G50).

This may or may not help in your decision making, but the G50 has the Canon advanced mini-shoe just in front of the EVF so that you can attach a Canon DM-100 shotgun mic to it. The G70 does not appear to have this feature but does feature that cold shoe near the front as well as the G50.

How do you color grade the g50 footage? Would you mind sharing your work flow?

I purchased the G70 in December of 2022. The camera has a lot going for it such as the bright and sharp viewing screen and sharp zoom even wide open. I like the exposure compensation adjustment knob just below the lens, very handy. The build quality is great and image stabilization set to dynamic is good. Outside in bright daylight the image is bright and sharp with saturated colors and great skin tones. My first outing was at a horse parade and the video looked fantastic. Things seemed promising. So what are the downfalls in my opinion? The low light capability is abysmal. Push the gain over 4 and the image starts to fall apart. At a gain of 10 it's mush and falls short of my 6 year old Canon 80d @1080p. In my RU-vid studio I have to push my Godox 60W in a softbox to full power. At 4 feet the exposure with fill is F 1.8 at a gain of 4. It looks good here but any less and the quality takes a serious dive. Outdoors it's a win but indoors you better have great lighting and some skill. I hope that helps.

That's what that dial does? I'm not sold on the G70, I've had it a week, and did some college sports with it and I just don't know.. I'm comparing it to my Nikon D850 and Nikon D500.

Grainy and blurry for most of the video. Obviously, a tiny 1/2.3" sensor needs more than ambient light to look good in 2023. For a mid-90s look, fantastic, as was the music!

This footage looks nice. Nowadays, with mirrorless cameras, footage doesn't look natural; it's oversharpened.

Is it me? When I take a good and critical look at the first 2 shots: The hat (first shot) and the art (second shot) you can see how the pixels keep searching for the right color. It's tiny, small, little, micro.......but it simply doesn't give a 4K quality look and feel. Besides that, my experience so far is that 4K camera's against older and cheaper HDMI camera's don't give a nice and bright color. There always seems to be some gray glow over everything. I tried it on lemon green and it just isn't bright enough in 4K in my opinion.

The G50 is definitely not a cinematic camera so if the quality of the footage is something that's important to you, this may not be the right camera for you. I like how easy it is to use this camera for everyday filming and I'm not too concerned about the cinematic quality for that purpose.

Thanks for confirming EXACTLY what I was looking for: Noise/Grain. The low-light recorded footage from the G70 looks VERY grainy/noisy. 😪 Therefore, I will prefer to go with the SONY AX700 cause it has a better CMOS sensor for ultra-low light! I do mind paying few hundred dollars extra, because noise/grain in low light is an insane turn off for me!! 😔. When it comes to ultra-high Quality video making SONY is a no-beat anyways.

Gosh, this was a long time ago ... I can't recall. But I rarely have to change memory card. I usually 128. :)

I filmed it mostly on auto and color graded it in post in Premiere Pro. I hope I answered your question since I'm not quite understanding the entire question. Thanks very much for the test footage, or short film even with the music and how this was cut together, really nice! As for the cameras the colours were great, but too much grain for my taste, I wish Canon had used a 1" sensor. I'm missing my Canon XA11 which I sold a few years ago so I'm tentatively window shopping for a replacement. Although would probably need an IR model for some of the very low light filming I do.

Aww thank you. I do really really love the nicer, clearer resolution of the display screen and the viewfinder on the G70. But a used G50 is currently so affordable! It's a tough decision!

hi @sarahle, nice video, what do you think of the sony zv1 for daily video documentation? portability and image quality as main characteristics to take into consideration and compared with these models of canon camcoders? One more thing... I would like if you can at some point also try the XA70 canon, since you adore the XA50, see what you think too, if the improvements made are worth it, and how you feel it in your hands, your experience. I love your videos, your way of visually narrating and your contributions with the thoughts and sensations of the models or tools you test. Thanks for sharing and keep creating beautiful content!

Hi and thank you for this great video. I have had g30 for 8 yrs and its about the time to upgrade and g70 is quite nice option…Batteries and filters fits, but is there still too little differences beetween them 🧐🤔

Please dont. Not enough upgrade. Now the GX10 is the direction you should go. Cheapest option for 4k 60 fps. Everything else is 30 fps

I can't remember exactly but most likely, I used the highest ISO possible that still preserves the integrity of the footage, and a constant speed that goes with the frame rate, and adjust aperture for a good exposure. :)

I just got the 70. Are you using manual focus to achieve some of your shots? I'm still getting to know if bc it's brand spanking new... But I'm finding it difficult to achieve a cinematic look bc I'm not sure how to manipulate my settings on this camcorder. For ex: depth of field and racking focus from the background to the foreground is a bit tricky for me w this. Do you have any tips?!

Camcorder cameras are more of a documentary type camera, and not a cinema camera. I use them mostly to document everyday life, etc. If cinematic shots are more important to you, you may want to check out the cinema cameras? I change focus manually and it's a bit slow to do so. I don't expect too much out of the G50 other than to use it as a convenient documentary camera. I'm also using it mostly with auto settings for convenience.

It looks SO grainy, like you're filming thru a screen door... Oh well, to each their own. And honestly, who has a portrait of Kikkoman soy sauce? Look, I'm not trying to be mean here, but seriously this is not good. Am I wrong? Were you trying to go for the 90's Vivitar low digital look? If so, then YES, you succeeded... All I can figure is something was seriously wrong with your ISO settings. =( Anyone else care to explain?

I'm glad it's not just me. My takeaway was that it looked like a cheap camera phone I'm afraid. I'm hoping it was to try and give a vintage look and they used massive amounts of ND to achieve it.
