🤓 I think I found it in the Dictionary 📚, a 'timber launder' is ' a trough for holding or conveying water, especially ( in mining ) one used for washing ore '
@MagentaOtterTravels
@MagentaOtterTravels 3 года назад
So were they washing trees or ore? And why? I clearly did not read all the signs and properly research the history of this place! 🤨🧐
@wencireone
@wencireone 3 года назад
@@MagentaOtterTravels so reading between the lines, the falls are the leftovers from the original leat made for mining ore ( metals ) and is completely man-made. When the mining 'dried up' the water was left to fall over the rocks. Everyday a school day 🙂👍
@cogidubnus1953
@cogidubnus1953 3 года назад
@@MagentaOtterTravels Leats are channels, often running parallel to a natural watercourse which divert water mainly for use in industry or trade...for example to run through a watermill, or in medieval times to a monastic fishpond, or in mining country, an ore-washing plant...generally the leat continues at the other end, back to the same or a similar watercourse. I think a launder was a raised trough conveying a similar stream of water, (but impregnated with ore in powder or sandy form) above ground...similar to the ones seen in some pictures of gold-panning but in the UK usually to a stamping mill or extraction plant ... I knew I read all those Poldark books for a reason...actually next time you're in the West Country, I seem to recall seeing some of these many years ago at a place called Morwelham Cove or Morwelham Quay, near Tavistock - which from my recollection of long ago was a great and very full day out!

When up north there are several waterfalls worthy of exploration. The Ingleton Waterfalls Walk (fee required unfortunately), Hardraw Force (doesn’t hurt that you have to go through the Green Dragon pub to get to it) both in Yorkshire and in the Lake District, Lodore Falls and Aira Force. There’s one I’ve visited in Wales where you can walk behind the Falls - blowed if I can recall the name, perhaps, somebody can enlighten me? Back in Yorkshire, I’m always impressed by the waterfall coming through the rock window at the awesome Gordale Scar. A couple to add to the list!

Hi Ian. I think you are referring to Henrhyd Falls in Brecon Beacons. I must have visited it as a child since I used to spend my summers in that area of Wales (on a farm near Ammanford) but I don't remember it. My mum would take me to every castle and attraction we could fit in. All these falls are great suggestions and we'll add them to the bucket list. Even though I've been to the UK at least 30 times on holiday there are so many places I still haven't visited but would like to. I'm really looking forward to seeing the North of England again. I really want to visit Cragside in early June when the rhododendron are in bloom, see some of the things I've missed in the Yorkshire Dales like Malham Cove, and hike in the Lake District (only been there twice - not enough).
@ianpark1805
@ianpark1805 3 года назад
@@ians3586 The Brecon Beacons would be right. I’m pretty sure we ended up there when we met up for a hillwalking weekend but were stymied by the great Foot and Mouth Lockdown! (So it’s been a while, though we did go back and climb the hills!). Cragside is fantastic as are the ‘carriage drives’ nearby. Malham is effectively my backyard, so to speak (I live about forty minutes drive away) and a favourite place to walk. The Lakes is my favourite place to walk and I’ve been there countless times - you are right twice really isn’t enough! I hope to be back in the Lakes before too long and in the Dales, but walking is currently a problem - rather fear I need a new left hip! But assuming I can get it fixed the hiking boots will be on and I’ll be back out there with a vengeance - have missed it more than I could possibly imagine this year! Let me know if you want advice on routes in the North! If mobile, will guide for the price of a pint!
@ians3586
@ians3586 3 года назад
@@ianpark1805 so sorry to hear about your hip. I empathize with your limited mobility. I've had plantar fasciitis since 2014 and it's been hugely restricting. During our 2019 trip we took our friends, one of whom hadn't been to the UK, to the Lake District. During that trip we hiked to the second cairn of Low Fell between Loweswater and Crummock Water. I found it was possibly the most scenic view I've ever taken in. It is a favourite of Andrew Locking who lives in the Lake District and has documented hundreds of walks in the Lake District with incredible photography. Check it out at www.andrewswalks.co.uk/. Nearby was the Kirkstile Inn which was the perfect place for us to hang out for a couple of hours while we waited for the weather to clear.
