This is completely wrong geometry. Not only of the cantiliver arms but the yoke. Arms should be parallel against rim at contact and yoke should be at a 90 degree angle at contact. It should make a perfect house shape. Ironically these brakes were set up much closer to proper before he "fixed" them.
@kitmichas6985

sometimes we get stuck on what things "should be" instead of what they can be. Doing things the same way never leaves room for innovation or improvement.

This tutorial is just bad. Check the ones from Parktool if you want it done properly. By the way: 13:13 - brake pad set with toe-out... 13:18 - stradle housing not in contact with brake arm... 13:26 - all other things being equal if the brake lever feels less spongy it means you've actually REDUCED the mechanical advantage and the power of the brake. I hate when someone shows just bad practice, justifies that with faulty logic and makes a "tutorial" out of it.

Polishing the axe's is perhaps a good solution at Short terms but to be durable the lubricant need to seat in the little porosties of the metal to act as a chimical bearing. If you polish your metal is to slick and the lubricant will go away faster and the results will be metal on metal 😱 I'm interested on your experience with it if you can make a feed back a bit later? Your adjustment and working process are very very good 👌👍 Thank you

There's only so much about these kind of brakes you can show on a short video. There's a lot of good here but some things left out too. Like he really waxed over the hardest part of aligning the pads with the side of the rim. Especially with older cantis- you have to sometimes spend a lot of time going back and forth with the hardware to get the geometry right so: there is enough power, and that the braking surface is mated to stop pad squealing. Often the old metal has indented metal markings that make the washer stack have "memory" and will drift out of alignment while you work.

You need to set the toe-in, so that the front of the pad contacts the rim first. What I do, is I pinch a dime between the rear of the pad and the rim when I'm setting up the pad positioning.
@lihtan

Usually if you want better braking power, swapping over to V-brakes is the way to go. I've even done fork swaps in order to get disk brakes on a bike. I did have an old MTB that I was trying to keep the retro charm of it's original cantis. What I did was install a set of Kool Stop salmon all weather brake pads, then I swapped out the brake levers for a nice set of Deore XT levers that had ServoWave on them. I found it had substantially better power and modulation when I was done.
@021mr5

You need a longer straddle cable. Angles are way off in that straddle cable, use a Letter B or C if you're going to adjust the brake pad that far out. No mechanical advantage, also there's no toe in on the pads.

@Ralph Reilly do an experiment. Take two steel pipes. Polish one to a mirror finish and leave the other one raw. The raw one will slide through your hand very easily. The polished one will actually feel sticky. Metal is porous, when you polish it you close those pores. See the response before yours. This is also why a polished pipe won't rust anywhere near as fast or why metal starts rusting with little specks.
@trickystitch

V-Brakes were more powerful than cantis because of two design reasons. The first was that the cable was straight pull from the lever. This is were most of the power gain was from. Increasing the angle of your canti bridge mathematically reduces your pulling power. Clearance was the main benefit of this setup. Never liked running them that way personally.

My Trek 970 has canti and they work well in dry condition that they lock wheels almost like V brakes. However even the slightest drizzle make them very ineffective and also get noisy. The rims get black from worn rim/pads mixed with road salt and dirt. What are the best canti pads in the often rainy climate and keep the rims from excessive wear? For just for commuting and occasional dirt rides?

I love cantilever brakes for being much more stable than V-brakes. When the mechanism of V-brakes gets dirty, they tend to pull to one side, rubbing against your rim. Canti's are 3-point suspended, so they stay centered under whatever circumstances! A couple of tips though: * Use a cable cutter instead of a side cutter, so you don't damage the strands of the wire. * Use some thread locker on the bolts (most new bolts are equipped with a bit of thread locker at the top) * Put a piece of carton under the back end of the brake pad when adjusting. It helps against noise, and the pads will flex in smoothly on the rim when braking. That's my 50 cents... Have a safe ride!

Cantilever brakes work best if they are dumped in the trash bin and be replaced by V-brakes. Even the cheapest V-brakes are way better than high-end Cantis. Just in case, there are Xtreme travel adapters available for pull-ratio conversions.

There is a quick release, where the end of the straddle cable (cable between both brake arms) is hinged, not screwed). You can pull the round end of the cable out, the whole brake setup loosens, and you can take off the inflated wheel. With the removal of the wheel, you mention actually an important point. I set up my cantilever brakes with the function of the hinged side of the straddle cable in mind. If the straddle cable is too tight to unhinge, you have to use a tool (in my case a 5mm hex key) to open it to remove your wheel, you need a tool to close the screw. If you use a tool to loosen the straddle cable, you might also have to adjust the cantilever brake - again!
@DilbertMuc
@DilbertMuc Год назад
The dremel part of polishing the "pivot" is utter nonsense. It is a break holder and not a pivot at all and please check the functioning setup of cantilever and V-brakes. There is an inner metal ring in the brake that simply slides on the the brake holder. The brake holder can be rotten and rusty and the brake would still perform perfectly well. You need to clean and lube the inner metal parts of the brake. 🧐🖕
