LYRICS:
Répands sur nous le feu de ta grâce puissante;
Que tout l’enfer fuie au son de ta voix;
Pour te bénir maintenant rassemblé;
Reçois les chants qu’il offre à ta gloire immortelle;
(from Hymnes traduites du bréviaire romain)
(Word of God, one with the Most High, in whom
alone we have our hope,
Everlasting light of heaven and earth,
We break the silence of the peaceful night;
Saviour divine, cast thine eyes upon us!
Pour on us the fire of thy mighty grace,
That all hell may flee at the sound of thy voice:
Banish the slumber of a weary soul,
That brings forgetfulness of thy laws!
O Christ, look with favour upon thy faithful people
Now gathered here to praise thee;
Receive their hymns offered to thy endless glory;
May they go forth filled with thy gifts.)
Fauré Requiem and other sacred music
John Rutter’s Gramophone Award-winning 1984 recording of Fauré’s Requiem, re-released in 2010 at mid-price. The first-ever performance on disc of the work in its intimate original version - famously re-discovered by Rutter in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris after a century of neglect - it remains one of the timeless jewels in the crown of the Collegium catalogue.
John Rutter, English composer and conductor, is associated with choral music throughout the world. His recordings with the Cambridge Singers (the professional chamber choir he set up in 1983) have reached a wide global audience, many of them featuring his own music in definitive versions. Among John’s best-known choral works are Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, and Visions, together with many church anthems, choral songs and Christmas carols.

Our Cathedral choir sang this at my mother’s memorial mass in 2017. We sang it in English and it was so moving. The tears were streaming.

Harmonieuse inspirational. Je l’adore.

As our pastors say from time to time, you didn't have to sing it - you got to sing it. And what a comfort this piece is.

It's incredible to think that Faure wrote this when he was just nineteen years old. Just right for unwinding after a hectic day. I never, ever tire of singing it. John Rutter and his Cambridge Singers have managed to make it sound even more beautiful, if that's possible!

The Cantique... is NOT from the Faure Requiem. 🙄😖 It was written more than 20 years prior to the Requiem. 🙄😖
