Unboxing and first ride on Spectral:ON CF8 2022 00:18 Unboxing 03:29 First ride: Nokia, Harjuniitty, Finland 06:24 (almost) First ride: Tahko MTB route, Nilsiä, Finland
[Ready To Play] That's what comes to my mind after my maiden ride on this bike (Reference to KTM [Ready to Race] slogan). I received and tested it today (CF8 also), it's easy to fine tune, funny as hell to ride on, and I was back at home with 50% battery left, riding like a pig, most of the time in Trail or Boost mode during 36km (30% eco, 70% Trail or Boost). For a compulsive buy, it was a VERY GOOD one. 99% satisfied, only the cranks should be 1cm shorter to get a bit more ground clearance while keeping muscle power (I'll reduce rear SAG a bit to compensate, but this will have a price in DH). All settings as to be done, nothing is good out of the box, but all is simple and efficiente. Steering weight surprising : - At low speed, handle bar tend to go either left or right instead of staying in line, giving maneuverability in technical areas but disturbed me cause it was so different from my old Zesty 26". - It has a very funny, neutral and natural behavior at 20/25km/h. - At high speed it's very stabe and reassuring. First I was a bit disturbed, but after 1h of ride, I found it was a perfect balance. Gear shifting is perfect. Regarding suspensions, I'm not a pro of settings, so this combo is adapted to me, no complicated settings, only pressure + rebound speed, and the ability to block (or semi block) front and rear suspension. I need nothing more, as long as the range setting is large enough, and it's the case for the fork and the rear shock absorber. You can hear disturbing noises when branches or stones hit the carbon frame at high speed, there is a thin protection on the lower tube, is it enough ? Surprisingly, in this carbon sounding board, the motor is very quiet. I've not enough experience to talk about it's behavior vs competitors, but I like it a lot !! I can't talk about the brakes because they are new. They did the job today, so they should do it even better after few more kms (no noise, enough power). The saddle if very comfy, as the handle bar and the grips. The tires are average, they don't like smooth wet stones, like most of the tires. The app is easy to install and clear, but nothing surprising. Last but not least, as a motorbike rider, I'd like to invert the brakes sides, but with those breaks you can't without unplugin the brake hose :/ This would be nice to have it as a choice when ordering, so many people are both riding motorbikes and bikes.
Nice observations! I noticed the frame noices from small stones in the beginning but got used to them, not an issue I think. Playfulness is the key element with this bike. It turn so well and is easy to jump even from small shapes on the trail. Still, even it's very agile, it takes rowdier sections and downhill like a champ. I recently remedied the constant pedal strikes by switching the crank arms to 160mm version. Even though it's only 5mm less, the difference is huge! Made riding much more fun since now it's possible to pedal in a much more consistent way without worrying about the pedal strikes that much. Rear shock pressure (sag) also plays its role, so adding a little pressure helps.
Thanks for watching. The motor noice is something I got used to quite fast. The "whining" noice sounds like wind on the video, I think. What took more time to accept was the rattling noice the Shimano motors make, but once learning it's a feature and not a defect, I stopped paying any attention to it either.
@@kurtsillamtb I haven’t ridden it yet. I’ve just changed the tyres to Schwalbe (magic mary front and big betty back) and have gone tubeless. First ride will be next weekend. I was a little concerned how the chain is touching the chain guard when on the smallest sprocket… emailed canyon and they said that’s normal… great video and thanks for the reply
@@jerryofthebikes hi. I absolutely love the bike and no issue with chain rubbing. Unfortunately I came off it following a jump I had done many times and broke my shoulder. The bike is fine though with no scratches or damage. The power delivery is superb from the EP8 and a very quiet motor when compared to the specialized turbo Levo alloy 2022. I can’t wait to get back out on it.
@@VinceNysse ouch, hope you can get on your bike sooner than expect! Thank you for your answer, that clears my doubts about this bike ;) The other doubt are cable routing that goes through headset bearings but I hope it will be some standard bearings that are easy to find as a replacement. Service them will be pain in the ass but its sth for sth..
Minulla Shimanon moottori toimi hyvin.
@@kurtsillamtb Okei, kiitos tiedosta.
You have beautiful trails to ride ! I am old and ride very slow now, do you think an eMtb would benefit a slow rider like myself or are these really designed for a fast technical rider like yourself , thanks
I'm convinced they fit all kind of riding. Although most of my rides on eMTB still tend to get too fast and intensive, my original reason for purchasing an eMTB was to be able to mix really relaxed and low intensity riding to my regular acoustic program. Now as the initial and sharpest enthusiasm has worn off, I'm starting to succeed going by that plan. Slow and relaxed rides on an eMTB are lovely too!
Will the different size wheels (mullet) also fit on flat tracks. I'm thinking about this model, but I'm interested in forest trails, not steep descents or climbs
I think they fit very well on flat tracks and trails. The bike is very nimble and easy to steer, much due to mullet setup, that should help everywhere you ride. If you ride more on easier terrain, I think also there would be less strikes, which are one of the down sides of the mullet design and very low BB. Personally mitigated that with shorter crank arms, easy swap and inexpensive as an investment.
Looks very good and if can handle those trails it must be up to it.. Display controller looks to be in a fragile location to get any damage from a fall...
I think the display controller is pretty well protected, but of course with bad luck it could be damaged from a fall. Have been able to avoid those situations so far :)
hi, any problems with bike/frame so far? how is your chainstay protector? There are some complaints about rubbing when riding on smaller cogs. Headset bearings are ok?
After 1300km of rough-ish riding no big issues yet. Some creaks from most likely coming from seat post attachment area, nothing that cleaning and friction paste would not fix. The chain does rub the chainstay protector, but that's by design based on the thick protector rubber. Will go a long way before needs to be replaced. Checked the headset bearings once, maybe after 900km. They were not in perfect condition but good enough to continue with the originals. The biggest issue for me was the low bb and constant pedal strikes. It's funny how big of a difference switching to 5mm shorter crank arms made - now the bike is much better and allows more consistent pedalling over technical sections. This is an upgrade I warmly recommend.
It's a 900Wh battery, so the range is pretty good. I have not tried an extended "average load ride" to see what it the absolute maximum range (~100km?), but have done some intense medium length rides (+60km) with still plenty of battery left. One example: 60km ride on Tahko MTB route (biggest XC marathon in Finland), varying from gravel transitions to rough singletrack, ascend 1200m. Rode that on highest level of assist and race pace all the time, 25% battery left in the end. I think 100km normal trail riding could be easily doable.
Hi! I got size L. I'm right between sizes (L/XL) as my height is 190cm/~6'2, but went for the L since that way it can be used by my wife too (it's a bit too big for her, but for occasional rides ok). The weight for the bike with pedals and 900Wh battery is 24,6kg. It's a fun bike to ride, but I would probably choose something else based on ~800km of riding. The biggest disadvantage for me is the low BB. Even though mullet setup makes the bike very playful and agile, the low BB means a LOT of pedal strikes on rocks and roots, much more than with any other bike that I've previously owned (7 MTB's, this is my first eMTB). I like to ride rather rough and technical trails, so it's more like heavy enduro use. For that kind of use the bike is not optimal, even though it can take also that kind of riding. But for smoother, fast trails it's a brilliant bike and also the suspension seems to work perfectly - suspension feels really smooth but without pedal bobbing, yet still has that playful pop to jump from almost everywhere. My advice: consider where you ride and if you are afraid of getting too much pedal strikes. The need to adopt your pedalling to being constantly cautious of pedal strikes will slow you down since you cannot have the "drive on" all the time. Also I would opt for larger size if you are close to being between sizes.
A bit late reply, but anyway...the magnet in the rear rotor is similar to this: www.bike-discount.de/en/bosch-magnet-for-6-hole-disc-rotor It's held in place by two of the six rotor bolts.
do you have creaking in your headset? mine creaks when handlebars are moved side to side. regreased the headset, still makes noise. anyone else with this issue with their Specteal On?
This is not $8.5K USD if that is what you are referring to. That is the top spec CFR model. The brand new model 900 kWh battery Spectral:On CF8 with 160mm fox fork is $5.5K. The older model featured in this video can still be had and is $5.2K.
