- Cape To Kunene Ep 10 4K We Finally make it! Hoarusib Khumib Kunene
After Languishing in the relative luxury of the Puros community camp for two days, it was time to push north again.
Our plan? …another attempt to explore the Hoarusib upstream.
The ephemeral Hoarusib River, carves it way through a spectacular mountainous terrain.
This wilderness is an oasis of life and attracts the elusive desert elephants, which are drawn by the promise of water and sustenance.
Explorers and adventurers are lured by the mystique of this wilderness, where the desert’s secrets are guarded by this river.
Yet, the very wildness that makes it alluring also demands respect and caution.
We asses the river and decide the risk of getting stuck in the mud was not worth it and take the detour up the Khumib river instead.
We enter the Marienfluss and it is the last stretch to the Kunene. We have made good time. As we drive through this unique landscape we are struck by the beauty of the kaokoland.
The mere act of getting here is an expedition. Out here our modern world does not exist. The community of semi nomadic pastoral Himba that eek out an existence call this home. There are mountains that are sacred and the land equals your survival. There are no modern world conveniences anywhere and this is why we come here to experience something from another world.
As we venture into the Marienfluss, the final leg of our journey towards the Kunene River, we’re making excellent progress. Driving through this distinctive landscape, the raw beauty of Kaokoland unfolds before us.
It’s a place where a semi-nomadic pastoral community of Himba people have carved out their existence, and they call this harsh land home. Sacred mountains rise, and survival hinges on your connection with the land. In this wilderness, the trappings of the modern world are absent, and it’s precisely this absence that draws us here, seeking an experience from a world beyond our own.” This is the moment! We are elated! This is an exciting moment for us. We have been trailblazing for days to get here. The Kunene is now finally with reach.
As the afternoon sun dips toward the horizon and the shadows grow longer. Our spirits are dusty and fatigued, but our determination remains unwavering as we press northward, now engulfed by a vast sea of sand.
On the distant horizon, the mighty Angolan mountains rise,
This is the moment we’ve eagerly awaited!
The Kunene River is tantalizingly close now, within our grasp, It’s an exhilarating juncture in our journey, a culmination of days spent trailblazing north.
…And we finally arrive on the banks of the Kunene River.
Mushroom Risotto Recipe
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups Arborio rice
4 cups vegetable or mushroom broth
2 cups fresh oyster mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
1 cup dry white wine
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons butter (or vegan butter for a vegan option)
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper to taste
Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Oregano
Parmesan
Instructions:
Heat the vegetable or mushroom broth in a saucepan and keep it warm over low heat.
In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 2-3 minutes until it becomes translucent.
Stir in the minced garlic and sliced oyster mushrooms. Sauté for another 5-7 minutes until the mushrooms are tender and lightly browned. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
Add the Arborio rice to the skillet and stir it in with the mushrooms and onions. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the rice becomes translucent around the edges.
Pour in the white wine and stir continuously until most of the liquid is absorbed by the rice.
Begin adding the warm vegetable or mushroom broth, one ladle at a time, stirring constantly. Wait until the liquid is mostly absorbed before adding more broth. Continue this process until the rice is creamy and cooked to your desired level of doneness (usually about 18-20 minutes).
Stir in the remaining tablespoon of butter and the grated Parmesan cheese (or nutritional yeast for a vegan option). Mix until everything is well combined, and the risotto is creamy.
Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
Serve the oyster mushroom risotto hot, garnished with freshly chopped parsley. You can also top it with additional grated Parmesan cheese or a drizzle of olive oil, if desired.
Enjoy your delicious homemade oyster mushroom risotto!

So glad you ended with " To be continued" was worried that the fact that you'd "finally made it" meant that that was the end of the journey - but Yay - looking forward to your adventures onward and homeward bound! Oh your comment made us laugh, Christoph was on my case to get the recipe up and ready for today….me.. I want off to Betty’s Bay to spend a girls night with 2 friends. So when I got home just now the first thing that was mentioned was your ‘thanks for the recipe’ thought he was being a bit heavy handed with sarcasm 🤣only to discover Mr Uber efficient had in fact done the recipe himself. So, thank you and it was a pleasure 😂👍🏼

One of these days I’ll make it all the way to Camp Syncro. I always end up with car problems when I try😢😢

@@markyeadon7271 Yes Camp Syncro is one of those hard to reach destinations that require a lot of planing. I have been foiled before with not enough fuel to reach this magical place. This is our third attempt. This is the adventure we all look for and when you finally get there it will be a sweet moment.Hope to see you out there.

Oh my! Another beautiful episode! I especially enjoyed the still photographs taken at sunset during the wild camp in the Khumib river as well as the drone footage taken upon entering the Marienfluss. The late afternoon footage at the upper end of the Marienfluss is also special. You mentioned in the video that you were aiming for Csmp Syncro. In the end you camped at the community camp. Is there a reason for that? Does Camp Syncro still operate, since Rysn and Sarah went back to Switzerland?

We are glad you enjoyed this episode and thanks for your comment. As we have not been to either camps before and had no idea what to expect we thought to check out the community camp first. We were the only campers there and could cherry pick the best site with shade all day long. The location is also a good one with lovely views of the Kunene. They had all the amenities plus electric power points at each site(not the case at camp syncro). We did go and check out Camp Syncro on the way out and it is also a nice well run camp site that is still very much in operation. The sites were a lot closer together but it was very lush with a lot of shade. They are both nice camps hard to pick a winner. The sites were a little more spaced out in the community camp. On this trip we got used to wild camping and we were had that the community camp site seemed a little less developed and curated. Helping the community seemed like a plus as well. Next time you go take some seeds for locals to cultivate vegetables for food and a soccer ball for the kids. they truly have nothing. We gave them all the seeds we had in our pantry. Happy travel.

@@SoulTonicLife Thanks for the comprehensive reply! I'm glad to hear that Camp Syncro is still operating. Regarding the locals - we always take writing books and pens and tennis balls. We do this as opposed to giving sweets. It worries me that the 4X4 community is introducing the locals to that. Your idea of seeds and perhaps a soccer ball is great!! 🙂

I loved the series so much. Last year we drove from Cape Town to Puros and then further on to Etosha and back to Cape Town . Next year we are going back. From Cape Town again. First Kalahari Transfrontier Park and then via Mariental, Damaraland to the Kunene, Opuwo, Caprivi, Kasane, Vic Falls, Nata, Kubu island, Kama Rhino, Serolo Camp and back via Johannesburg (we are from Belgium). What was the time of the year when you travelled in Kaokoland?
@SoulTonicLife
@SoulTonicLife 9 месяцев назад
Thank you for your lovely message. Your trip sounds like it is going to be great! In the Kalahari transfrontier consider a detour to Mabuasehube on the Botswana side if you have the time and are ready to wildcamp. We traveled in the Kaokoland early May. A big bonus was that there were very few mosquitoes and the nights were windstill. Further South the nights were cooler and down sleeping bags were needed. Happy travels.

@@SoulTonicLife we will be there also in the beginning of may just like in 22. It was very hot then in Puros (40*). Hopefully a bit lesser next year!

Hi Christoph, how many fuel do you carry with you and what distance does that allow based on your experienced fuel consumption?
@SoulTonicLife
@SoulTonicLife 9 месяцев назад
Yes this is always a good question. In my opinion the more fuel you can carry the better the adventure. Traveling to these far and distant destinations and then having to turn around prematurely to refuel can be disappointing. The main reason I bought this truck was because it had an aftermarket 180 liter tank. This gives me a range of about 1300km mixed use, and about 1000 kms off road only.
@gmf756
@gmf756 9 месяцев назад
@@SoulTonicLife Thanks Christoph for your prompt response! 😃 Totally agree. The range of about 1000 km of off-roading makes totally sense. Luckily the Koakoveld trip is not pure travel on thick sand. But the slow going on rocky terrain is also quite fuel heavy.
