As a Capetonian I can say there is no such thing as a white neighborhood so the narrator should get her facts straight. Yes there is a big disparity between the classes but anyone can travel anywhere with no restriction
Well, as a capetonion who also informs themselves on the census, (which is available publicly) I can confidently say you’re wrong. There are most certainly racial neighbourhoods which have been shown to have more socio-economic power than others. This really is all publicly available, if not in the census, in academic papers. And there might not be restriction in the legislative sense, but there most certainly is in the social sense. I mean I’m kind of shocked really, this information really is easy to find as long as you look for it. Please base your opinion on research rather than your personal perceptions.

The dubbing is awful and factually, numerous errors. The Atlantic and Indian Oceans do NOT meet at Cape Town. The language is NOT Xhosa, but Afrikaans. Words like “apartheid” are hopelessly mispronounced. Quite dated, and numerous violations of civil rights (unlawful arrests, warrant less entries, portray the Mtro Cops as vigilantes. Translations - amateurish. I would rate it D+ - and request a severe revision. Overall, bad portrayal of police at a time when police need positive ratings.

Only separation from there is ethnicity. Once the world accepts that truth, the faster things will change. I got mugged in Cape Town once, they caught the suspects. I had to go to the police station to identify them. I thought hidden mirror but no… I was taken into the police cell and all their fellow gang members saw me.
Just take note that the whole of Cape Town lies in the Atlantic Ocean. No part lies in the Indian Ocean. The Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet in Cape Agulhas about 200km southeast of Cape Town. Cape Agulhas is the southernmost part of Africa. The language being spoken is Afrikaans, not Xhosa.

I live in the Cape Flats & I can rightfully say that this is a good documentary. However, the subtitles claim it to be Xhosa, when it's actually Afrikaans or Afrikaans Slang apart from English being spoken.
@@professor5281 Afrikaans is a mix of Indonesian, Malaysian, Dutch, and khoisan language. Coloureds originated from the khoi-san that mixed with Asiatic people and Europeans.
Lol Afrikaans is functionally all Dutch. 95% Dutch. The remainder other germanic languages. A sprinkle of Asian & African loanwords, like English has the Japanese "Tsunami" as a loanword. Khoi-san is not a real organic term, nor what any native *ever* called themselves. Reference to pastoralists and hunter-gathererers, not to any living native house/culture, e.g Xhosa.
The attitude of the narrator says a lot about her. Everyone has a right to feel safe in light of the breakdown of civil society, and nobody has the right to steal, or molest other individuals. When justice is not provided by the state, then the individual has to do it.

Neighbourhood watches arent vigilante, they are volunteer patrollers who work HAND IN HAND with SAPS to bolster their numbers. They are organisations within the legislation of our country. I think before making any documentaries people should Google South Africa, apartheid died in 1994 there's no more such thing as White and Black we have 4 different ethnic groups in SA ,whites, blacks, coloureds and indians and no-one banish anyone to live on the outskirts of anywhere, those who can afford to live in a more luxurious area do so and it has nothing to do with the skin colour of that person, we all strive to live together happily and I think we should be commended for that, there's few things which you should edit in your documentary, this documentary is so bad that when they speak Afrikaans (one of our eleven languages) your subtitles would say it's Xhosa (another of our eleven languages), Please take care before airing videos of such importance with so many mistakes

There are 3 races in South Africa. Whites, Blacks and Coloureds. Grant is a Coloured and one can distinguish them as the predominantly speak Afrikaans hence the different English accent.
Who did this video many inaccuracies I live in Cape Town. Everytime the cops arw speaking it says Xhosa but its Afrikaans. You need to get a local to see the video and tell you when doing editing so you can correct any mistakes
Went to rehab in CT in 2005. Was there about 5 months. Volunteered in a kid's hospice in Bridgetown in the Cape Flats. Met some really amazing kids, some orphaned with no visitors or relatives. Many had HIV & kids passed away and their bed quickly filled by a long waiting list. Maybe not the best choice of volunteering experience for someone just off years of opiate dependence, I dreamed about that place for months, still chokes me up a little now. I took a 'taxi' from Mowbray down to Bridgetown & back, didn't realise taxi meant a minibus full of locals, bit sketchy some days but it was great to see and experience real life in CT, people definitely weren't used to seeing a skinny white kid in their 'taxi'. The fare collecter guys who sit by the van doors usually kept an eye on me, I'd heard stories from young gang members at the detox months before about 26s and number gangs etc. they said white kids don't go into the flats & that foreigners would definitely be robbed but I didn't get any trouble (kept myself to myself though).

Visited Cape Town as a tourist in October 2023 and the sights I saw in the central city were amazing! Unfortunately, on the outskirts there were very impoverished people. You can’t help feeling bad for people who have been pushed into the situation of crime because of poverty. Wish the best for the good people of South Africa. Stay safe and much love ❤

I'm from Cape Town and be careful with that line of thought. The idea that poverty creates crime is false. Also, many of those people on the outskirts are either illegally in South Africa or are essentially economic refugees from the Eastern Cape. Many of those people have bricks-and-mortar homes but forsake them to live in back yard dwelling despite it being illegal to just erect structures to rent out. Many people form abroad (especially Europe) have no real. understanding of the actual dynamics and they just see the surface level of what's going on.
@@paullombard00 poverty is extremely responsible for crime, not just in South Africa and Cape Town but the world as a whole. Not ALL people in poverty turn to crime, but studies will show that those desperate for a better life will do desperate things like steal and commit offences.
I live in CT and I am white. This is a great documentary and I enjoyed it. However, there are a number of factual mistakes. One of several is that all whites own guns and have "barricaded" themselves away. Absolutely false. First, I do not know of any white person who owns a gun (although some surely do). Further, most whites do not live in affluent areas like Constantia and Bishop's Court, where white millionairess are really barricaded away by walls surrounding gardens the size of rugby fields and private security at their gates. I've lived next to black, white, and colored neighbors in the southern suburbs and none of us are "barricaded" away, unless the hedge surrounding my house and our flimsy front gate are a "barricade". People of all races walk their pets on the streets in these safer areas and take their children to the parks. Further, Table Mountain does not "separate" the affluent from the poor "ghettos". It is not anywhere close to the gang areas. On both sides of the mountain are affluent areas (the touristy Camp's Bay, Clifton, etc. on one side, and the suburban Newlands, Rondebosch, etc. on the other). The townships where gang violence happens are far away from Table Mountain and are separated by several suburbs between it and them. I'd say roughly after the Athlone area onward you begin entering these dodgy crime areas. They can also be seen from the freeway leading to the airport and Epping Industrial, also far from Table Mountain. Also, it is said that if you don't have security you "will be skinned every five minutes." Really? Cape Town is not an active war zone, despite the crimes in various township areas. This statement coming from a private security worker is nonsensical and alarmist because they do not even go into those areas to patrol. They patrol in the safer suburbs where citizens are not getting "skinned every five minutes" and where most crime is petty crime. Crime is always present but much less severe in the mid to higher income areas. Touch wood I haven't had any armed break ins. The worst was years ago when my bicycle vanishes from the yard during the night. You need to do your basic research otherwise it tarnishes the entire documentary and is offensive to the people you are referring to in it. That said, thank you for bringing attention to this underbelly of Cape Town, which really requires much more attention than it gets.

When I was a kid in SA When my dad decided to rent a house , the agent Told him that the small Unit at the end of the garden housed the black familly that took care of The house and domestic chores . My Dad said he did not want to pay more and he did not need them as we do our own . The agent told him that if they were not required they would be moved out , but had no where to go and no money . So my dad said OK and he paid them but did not use their labor . We were in S.A. for another year and left .
Although very informative as to what does happen in Cape Town, there are several inaccuracies in this documentary, which paint a very negative view on what is actually happening within the city. For one, it is Afrikaans that is spoken and not isiXhosa(Xhosa). Another huge inaccuracy is depicting various wealthy areas as "white" areas. In fact, many areas used to be only for white's across the whole of South Africa until the changes started in 1994 - that was apartheid - no getting away from that. Now, people from Europe, and other countries, who make money, are as much intermingled into all of the areas including the "privileged" areas (including many non whites). The concept of a white's only area no longer applies to many suburbs across the whole of South Africa. What is strange, and I might be wrong, is that the documentary focuses on the divide between white and black. Most of the footage is filmed in mixed race areas, including what is termed "coloured" areas - Hanover Park is an example. The gun range (firearms training facility) footage makes it out that it is only white males who arm themselves, but they had a lady in the footage, and I know of several black and coloured men and women who frequent that range to keep their skills current. Yes, security companies are being asked to escort people out of areas, when suspicious activities are noticed. What you don't realise is that many criminal elements walk around all of the neighbourhoods of Cape Town to scope out or identify which houses are soft targets (like owners who live in Europe, or houses which have no security at all) ... and then plan armed and sometimes very violent home invasions where they steal and beat up the occupants of the homes (irrespective of ethnicity or even age). Criminals who are ex-military and come from outside of South Africa target Cape Town on a regular basis. Your documentary is old - produced in 2013 - its over 10 years old - and things have changed since then. Some things have gotten worse and others better. But the only way for this to change is that corruption in all areas, from police to the legal system, to even the citizens who turn a blind eye to it - corruption must be dealt with. Citizens who patrol their neighbourhoods are not vigilantes - they are fed up with the inability of the police and the legal system to hold those who break the laws to account, and then they themselves get targeted ... I applaud those brave women who stood up to the gangsters and told them enough is enough. The people and citizens of South Africa need to stand up and take action, in various ways, to make things better for the future to come! Well done to the teams that allowed the camera team to follow them - your jobs as police officers are not easy. Thank you for your dedication and hard work to make a dent in the crime within South Africa!
This was too painful to watch, a story that needs to be told, but they did such a poor job of it, with so many things that are not true, and the bot speaking was just awful it hurt my ears. I do hope a better film maker decides to tell this story correctly.

This is the issue with international people wanting to do documentaries in SA they don't investigate properly, we have 11 languages here...... Xhosa vs Afrikaans (language spoken in this documentary) are worlds apart.... other than that it was an interesting watch just next time you do a documentary just do a little more homework.

I totally agree but ended up watching the whole thing just to see how much propaganda is packed into this. The film continually demonizes whites. It even goes so far as to demonize the neighborhoods in the white areas that have taken up arms and patrol their neighborhoods in an attempt to stop criminals. It then promotes the black neighborhood that confronts the gangs in an attempt to stop the violence. Racism on either side is wrong and should be condemned. This film does nothing but further racism and it's got to stop! But then again, that's what they want. They WANT the divide between blacks and whites as it keeps people preoccupied and more easily controlled by government. A house divided cannot stand.
