Welcome to this week's travelling Australia episode. We begin our epic adventure of 'Cape York Peninsula'. We take our Retreat Fraser caravan onto the red dirt and camp off grid as we make our way up the PDR of Cape York Queensland. We prepare the van to reduce as much dust as possible and show you how it stood up to the first few days of what has been our roughest road conditions to date.

Can’t believe how much stuff these people are taking I’ve traveled this country in a tent and a swag with a 4x4 😂 must be from the city for sure

I can't believe the audacity people have commenting on other people's needs and wants... FYI - family of three, full time travelling indefinitely, 8 weeks minimum planned to travel to a remote part of Aus, smart with money so don't want to waste it on unnecessary expensive food, have a set up with space and weight to take what we want and when (or just take half the setup and rough it like the country folk we are when we want to). & btw we used every bit of it. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Thanks. It was for about 1minute as we really didn't want to do hundreds of KMs and not know what was going wrong 🤣and haven't done it again 🤣

To dust proof a caravan you also need to seal all the holes where the electrical wires and hoses come into the van as well as the wheel arches as most are spot welded. We've put piano hinges on all the doors and long screws in the fridge. Oh and drop your tyre pressure down to at least 28psi and drive at around 60-70k/he. We did Chambers Pillar towing our Avan semi off road at 22psi at 10km/hr

Thanks Debbie! We did silicone all the holes, wheel arches etc you mentioned. Most of the dirt was coming in the door and hot water so we taped plastic over the HWS and tried taping the door too. We had tyre pressures at 25/28/30 psi depending on which tyre and max speed was 60km, but mostly the 30/40 mark, it was just horrendous!!

Don't be scared to run at the symbolic Cape York tyre pressure - 26psi MAXIMUM. Even heavy vehicles driven up to 85-90kph are fine. It allows the tyres to absorb the corrugations and save the rig from being shaken apart.

Seriously Amanda, if you have an issue with dust stay on the east coast as the further west you go the more dust there is & its red dust (iron ore) and you just have to live with it.

Apparently the active dust reduction systems actually work, so we are considering this. I'd just prefer it not in my van if I can help it!

Hi Gareth, we tend to use the override on our caravan brakes down steep passes, the brakes on the caravan are much better than the trucks! That and engine braking is usually enough!

Good little episode. Good lot of info regarding the dust proofing. Did you have the scupper vent open or shut along the PDF ? Plus how fast was Daniel traveling when you were inside the van ?

Thank you! He was travelling about 50km/hour when I was in the van. We tried the scupper vent open another day later in the trip to compare. Will show this in another ep but not great and thinking we need a proper solution! :) Thanks for watching!
