Not so much a video as pictures through the Fruita entrance of the park. We planned on an hour drive through the park and spend 6 hours. It was a pleasant surprise. 70 million years of history in the rocks and petroglyphs young and old. Okay so the new stuff would be considered graffiti today, but the Pioneer Registry as pretty cool.
We started with Hickman Bridge, but the parking lot was already full so we headed back to the canyon drive. There were petroglyphs in two locations. One was right off the side of the road. The rock fall damaged the portion of this section, but it was still worth the stop.
We drove to the “end of the road” and then drove out the unpaved Capital Gorge Road. This was the second site with petroglyphs, although small, and the Pioneer Registry. These are names caved into the wall from “pioneers” passing through on there way west. Beyond this were the “Tanks”. These are just large holes that store water through the dry spells. I liked the hike up but the tanks were unimpressive.
We drove back on the trail to The Grand Wash and headed out on that unpaved road. This had some amazing wall features. The reds whites and brown layers and the round “holes” along the walls from the flash floods over millions of years were excellent. The zebra striped colors vertically on the walls were stunning. The Dinosaur scratches in the rocks was awesome. Okay I made that up, but that would be cool. The morning light really hurts the photos but come back in the afternoon on the way out the colors really stood out. Definitely take a day and drive the park. We only did the Fruita entrance and did not plan on much time there are hikes and there are several other entrances.
Our next time in the area I will be better prepared and spend more time.
