*A few remarks and clarifications:* 1) The video contains ads due to the fact that I'm a student and am compelled to use every source that can help me secure a modest means of subsistence. The ad revenue is in no way an object of luxury for me, nor does it even remotely mirror the insane amount of work and effort I put into each and every video. So if you're willing to support my endeavours, you can do so with a small monthly contribution on Patreon.com/BalkanOdyssey. 2) I am in no way, shape or form an expert on Marxism-Leninism nor do I claim to offer a definitive analysis, explaination or solution of Marxist concepts which I apply to my video-essays. There are plenty of more educated, more-well read and smarter comrades in the comment section and I'm sure they can spot mistakes and inadequacies in my thought. If you're one of them, I urge you to correct me and offer constructive criticism in the comments. It's in all our best interest to collectively come to correct conclusions. The goal is to think pragmatically, not to obey dogmatically. Read theory and think for yourself. 3) I cannot guarantee that every statistic and information I've used in this video is accurate, nor do I claim that my own calculations and estimates are in any way definitive and unalterable. The estimates are shallow and purely for orientation, yet in the grand scheme of things, they probably don't even reflect the true magnitude of suffering throughout the past three centuries. In case myestimates are completely wrong, I'll offer an alternative conclusion in written form in the comments - I stand to be corrected. Thank you for taking your time to watch the video. Awareness and education are always the first step.

One of the best examples was a gentleman named Smedley Butler, who wrote 'War is a Racket'. He served thirty years in the US Marine Corps, up to the rank of Major General. In three decades as a Marine, Butler wrote, “I spent most of my time being a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the bankers. In short, I was a [gangster] racketeer for capitalism". Check out this Two-time Medal of Honor Recipient and former Commandant of the United States Marine Corps. The notion that Hitler was a “leftist” or a “socialist” has always made me chuckle. The Nazis only included the word “socialist” in their party name because socialism was popular in Europe at the time, and Hitler wanted to garner as much widespread support as possible. Insofar as their economic policies are concerned, the Nazis were pioneers in privatization and free market, unregulated capitalism. In fact, a large reason as to how they were able to grow their military strength so rapidly is because of labor exploitation and being financed by white nationalists on Wall Street. Hell, the tycoons in New York were such big fans of the Nazis that they invited them over to spread their political agenda at a convention at Madison Square Garden before WWII.
@roquebrune4509
@roquebrune4509 Год назад
Free markets? With government fixed prices? But yes, Hitler tricked capitalists into funding his war economy (American funding as you wrote, mefo bills, etc) and used the state apparatus to make sure everyone worked enough. Hitler wasn't a "socialist" - because he didn't believed in a worker class - but he was a "national socialist" - or racial socialist - as he believed in an "aryan race" having to defend itself against a "jewish conspiracy". Hence the state, which represents the people or the Volk, massively intervened in the economy to turn it into a war economy, to end the "Jewish conspiracy". The state don't need to "own" the means of production, only to control them. Still socialist.
@theriverthatflows98
@theriverthatflows98 Год назад
"because socialism was popular in Europe at the time" That is blatantly false. The only theoretically socialist country in Europe, at the time, was USSR. Although there were some movements of socialists in Europe, all of them were irrelevant enough and dismisses this claim. "Hitler wanted to garner as much widespread support as possible" And he did, without the "socialist" branding, democracy did it's job. Socialist branding did nothing to improve his popularity, due to the before mentioned fact that socialism had not much popularity in Europe. "the Nazis were pioneers in privatization and free market" Once again, blatantly false. Hitler's February 28, 1933 decree nulified the Article 153 of the Weimar constitution, which guaranteed private property, with expropriation only to occur within the due process of the law, thus efectivelly ending private property which was safeguarded by law, as we have today. The fact that they did not collectivize the lands is not enough of an argument to say that they were free market enterpreneur lovers or privatization geniuses, lol. They did indeed reorganize all industry into corporations run by members of the Nazi Party (IG Farben and the Junkers airplane factory are good examples), yet the same happened in the USSR, where there were companies (let's say Irkutsk's steel mill number 5 or Stalingrad's meat processing factory number 2), which had de facto CEOs/directors, which were controlled by the party and usually were members of the communist party (more precisely - the branch of the occupied country's communist party branch). "a large reason as to how they were able to grow their military strength so rapidly is because of labor exploitation and being financed by white nationalists on Wall Street" Blatantly false, again. Do you really think that massive industrial strenght, needed to produce war materials, tanks, planes, weapons and etc. could be funded by a few Wall Street rich guys? Come on, that is beyond naive. German industrial strenght had all needed elements to produce the equipment and weaponry, the financial "aid" by the few americans was very miniscule as compared to the massive scale of the industrial output Germany managed to create, even before 1933, so the Wall Street "bad guys" are completely out of the equation. "Hell, the tycoons in New York were such big fans of the Nazis that they invited them over to spread their political agenda at a convention at Madison Square Garden before WWII" You're probably talking about the German-American Bund, aren't you? I wouldn't call that movement "New York tycoons" exactly. A lot of that movement had people with german roots and it's pretty obvious that people, who see their fatherland prosper, want to unite and invite the people who are behind Germany's success, don't you think? (I'm talking strictly about the economic aspects, not cultural or other darker aspects). All in all, your typical socialist mentality of blaming everything on everyone else and the "did not do anything wrong" doctrine is really flawed. National socialists indeed had a lot of socialist policies - massive spending on infrastructure, social benefits, healthcare, heavy industries, social programmes for both children and adults, paid vacations to parts of Germany or occupied territories for good workers and so on. All of my mentioned things were present in the USSR, alongside the genocidal programmes, although the germans targeted ethnicity (jews) and the soviets targeted both class and nationalities (though ethnicity based deportations did happen under Stalin).

Imagine thinking national socialism is capitalism 😂 Hitler creating the largest and unified nationalized worker union and improved living conditions for the average low wage worker. Commies only complain that he banned all other non nationalized labor unions but communists countries nationalized unions too. Communists try to hold double standards about this because they accept their conclusions before evaluating evidence. Industrialists complained about how they weren’t even in charge of their own companies because the state had so much control. It’s called state corporatism. China runs this economic model too and is highly successful. And, some private industry isn’t bad. People aren’t bugmen. They need a little individual incentive too.

Yes, partially. But, many of the diseases, if not the most of them, are not preventable by medicine, but by proper sanitation and proper nutrion. If you look at the data available for England and US at least since the end of 19th century the rapid drop of death rate, including from infectious diseases, happened in the first half of the 20th century. With social movements in the end of 19th century, sanitation and living standards significantly improved. While vax for most diseases, except one or two, is not the end of 19th century, but the 60s of the 20th. It is very misleading when people say that back then people lived 30-40 years, because of lack of medicine. Some, yes. But many rich people lived into their 70s and 80s no problems, and definitely did not look old at their 40s, even women. Proper nutrion, wich includes things like meat and butter are very important, or your body does not have building blocks to rebuild your cells, and you are old at 40, and even 30. Funny, how now our "rich saviours" are very concerned with how much meat we, the plebs, eat. 🤔 Just saying.

As a Left Communist, that it’s absolutely imperialism and this guy and many others are Marxist-Leninist. They’re revisionist and don’t even want to build a communist society, as seen in the Soviet Union, they believe the State can solve all our problems and enforce equality. I think channels like this downplay these sorts of issues because they complicate their arguments, which are limited in depth because of the format as a RU-vid video. I'm a marxist/communist, but I think this sort of wilful ignorance of history does nothing to advance these ideals. I'd say the reason the entire eastern bloc immediately abandoned socialism once they had the chance was because it was forced on their populations undemocratically by a foreign power, the USSR, just as capitalism was forced on much of the world through colonialism. No ideology, no matter how well intentioned or economically superior, will be accepted or embraced by people when it's forced upon them externally, and when they're deprived democratic rights. This is an essential lesson all those on the left should take from the 20th century.

I love pointing out capitalism puts profit over human life, something which we say is priceless, has a price and value put on it for mere survival. Capitalism ensures that only those with money can survive, and those that have no currency cannot live long or happily, nor do they get the chance to obtain money needed to survive. You must look and smell good and have a place of residence to be employed or maintain employment, meaning those with nothing at all literally cannot pull themselves up “by the bootstraps” the only way to earn more money to survive is to start off with it, most often by having a bank account set up by our parents before we get our first job.

@@sneland Your characterization of foreign investment in Asia and Africa is tiresome and fallacious Left wing dogma. Any time a Western corporation opens, say, a factory in Asia or Africa, this is nothing but a good thing. Governments openly welcome this investment. It creates jobs, that didn't otherwise exist. Factory jobs anywhere in the world pay more than most kinds of employment. Numerous governments demand partnerships with their own citizens as a prerequisite. Last time I checked nobody in Africa or Asia was being rounded up in pickup trucks at the point of a gun and being forced to work in these factories like you seem to imply. Impoverished people, mostly those who live in rural areas migrate to the cities willfully seeking these opportunities to better their lives by acquiring these jobs. They make more money than they thought possible. You're (no doubt willfully) ignoring the "economies of scale" The average price of a house in Toronto is a million dollars. Not so in Africa. This is why a factory worker in North America is paid vastly more. Africans who lived in squaller can now afford a small apartment, maybe own a TV for the first time in their lives. Your claim that companies throw out products is so absurd I'm at a loss for words. Free market economics ensures supply meets demand. Market pricing ensures everything gets sold. If too many products are produced, this is reflected in the price. It's a natural mechanism within capitalism that doesn't exist within socialism, and a major reason why socialism always fails. When there are few products and high demand, prices rise. When there are too many products and low demand prices fall. This is high school economics.

I'm a Syndicalist, but learning more and more about the history of socialism I begin to become more lucid. I don't think that we should do it exactly as back then in the marxist leninist way, but the soviet union was a great experiment. we should be proud of all socialists who fought for keeping it alive as long as it was and take inspiration from them. I started warming up to soviet history, whilst researching the GDR (I am german, but grew up in the south over a decade after the fall of the berlin wall). Initially I thought the gdr was kind of almost as bad as the third reich, but after learning about it in school we only learned about the Stasi (which was pretty shit tbh) but that was basically it. That was the only real negative thing we learned about the GDR, and also more or less the only thing we learned about them. Not so much negative stuff you can teach kids in school, so they didn't teach us a lot about the gdr. So I thought wow, there is not so much bad stuff that happened over there besides the stasi stuff and people who got killed while trying to flee. When I learned about the facts that they hardly had any homelessness and joblessness over there, plus gay rights from the very beginning (while in the west homosexuals were still put into mental asylums or prisons till 1969), strong worker democracy (but not that much political democracy, but hey, other opinions than socialism would be reactionary so I kinda understand) etc. Seems like a pretty good country. Actually it was the most advanced eastern bloc country. And they literally rose from ruins - they mention it in their absolutely amazing national anthem. Also they did actual denazification, while the west had fucking ex nazis in their fucking government. I think even one chancellor (ludwig erhard) was ex-nsdap which is absolutely wild. And on top of that, most gdr citizens didn't even want to abolish the gdr - they wanted to reform it. But when they had free elections reactionary conservatives rose to power and immediately abolished the gdr. After that they completely trashed the east and tried to abolish every good thing about the gdr to make it seem like a desolate poor region (which it has become now). Fucking disgusting.

There was nothing leftist about the soviet union. Lenin was a class traitor in the end. The USSR was an imperialist state capitalist power that used exploitation generated famines and slavery to become a world hegemon. The ones who fought to keep the USSR alive where not socialists. The closest you get to real world socialism was the Catalonian communes. They where destroyed by stalinists and fascists. Core principle of socialism is democracy. Without democratic values you have no socialism. It is like you guys completely lose all standard for what is good when it comes to the eastern block. We fight for better than liberal democracy. We are not fighting for "but it wasn't completely shit". The only thing I can give the GDR was that they had a banger of a national anthem. Should be the national anthem of Germany instead of that fascist/imperialist garbage that is currently used.

First and foremost, economics is a field of study. Which has been observed economic systems for the past 200 years. I've spend 3 years of my life going to university in a post communist nation where we've analyzed the economic system of both the western nations, Yugoslavia and it's republics, alongside with the USSR. Most of the books written about economics weren't written on pure speculation like the Communist Manifesto, and have numerous studies backing up what they say. The professors that have thought me, and others have also conducted numerous studies in the field and written several academic papers. With all that in mind, I am well more versed in the subject and the system than most people who do not have a background in the subject, and most likely you as well. Especially considering that my thesis was on the banking system of China, a "communist" nation. You dismissing that is comparable to an anti-vax mom dismissing a doctor saying vaccination is safe and good for their child, simply cause they read some articles written by god knows who on the internet contradicting that, and her choosing to believe there is some deep state conspiracy. Secondly, I get where you're coming from. You're pissed how the west fucked over Serbia and Yugoslavia in general, so you went down the rabbit hole of communist simply cause it goes against the values of those who have harmed our country. But this is not the way. You have noble intentions but you are being sucked down the rabbit hole of extremism and reading misleading stuff on the internet without any studies or statistic to back them up, and you're eating them up because it goes against the system that has wronged you. Thirdly, if you already want to go down this path, at least read other works of literature except the ones written by Karl Marx (which you even yourself admitted you didn't read), before you start spewing this completely one sided rhetoric. Consider checking out: Adam Smith, John Keynes, Friedrich Hayek, and Milton Friedman. And I know this is a meme and all, but seriously pick up an introductory book to economics and at least read that so you are familiar with the concepts of economics. >inb4 propaganda by the status quo, indoctrination. If you want to talk about this more, my DMs are open and I'll gladly answer any questions you have. Toliko od mene. I što bi naši rekli, "Mani se ćorava posla".

But you dont get to call that democracy just because there there were 1 election at some point. Democracy requires that people actually have voice, and so it requires new elections in some regular interval. When communists pretend that they care about democracy just to seize dictatorial power right after election, its not real democracy, even if they actually won that election. Your videos are excellent and your analyses are very clearly presented. But I disagree strongly on your analysis of the Holodomor. Ethnic Russian people did carryout a man-made famine against ethnic Ukrainians. That is an undeniable fact. Records of grain transfers and confiscations, then the subsequent relocation of hundreds of thousands of ethnic Russians to depopulated areas cannot be denied. The Soviet Union accomplished many great things. But we cannot point an accusing finger at capitalist imperialism and whitewash over the socialist imperialism perpetrated by the Russian Soviets.

Ghandhi said that poverty is the worst sort of violence. Capitalism's origins can be found in the mercantile system, in which new sailing technology allowed western europeans to explore the southern hemisphere, and with the blessing of the catholic church, to pillage, loot, rape, steal, kidnap the peoples and resources. the blessing was that if they didn't convert, they must be savage animals, not entitled to human status. this mindset has continued to the present day, but at more extreme rates and with government and corporate collusion (fascism) to prevent the southern peoples to exercise sovereignty over their lives and property. this is papered over with "free trade ideology" giving the veneer or appearance of the rule of law, but which is skewed towards the corporate goals of maximum expropriation of goods and resources and minimum wages, leading to almost free profits. this means that we are all complicit in this monstrous system. how do we get out?

That's just a small part of food waste though. Many farmers told me that around half of their produce won't be bought by supermarkets because it's slightly blemished or has imperfect shapes, and is left to rot in the fields because the cost of picking it would eat away at their already slim margins (because big chains also pay a pittance to farmers while cranking up prices for the consumers). I'm sure this is a widespread phenomenon.

36:20 "Ignoring the fact that the peculiar islands of socialism would not be able to withstand these imperialist pressures without a strong central state." In other words, not socialism. That's statism. A strong central state above the people, no matter how benign or benevolent, is not socialism or socialistic. It is statist. Socialism requires "democracy from below," which does not mean "vote for who will rule from above" or even "anyone can participate in government, but government still remains autonomous and above the people it governs." It means that the working people themselves are the government through common democracy. A strong central state rejects that principle of democracy by putting the actual decision-making power in the hands of the state, which is not nor should it ever be conflated with the public. Conflating "better" or "more democratic" or other things with socialism/communism is a mistake that socialists make all too often just to declare SOME progress or success for the movement. Don't make that mistake. Stalin did that. Mao did that. We should be critical of those claims, not follow in their footsteps like lemmings. Making the claims of "that's a socialist country" or "that's a socialist economy" only lends credibility to anti-socialist arguments about what socialism really is, and why it has nothing to do any of the arguments made by Marx, Lenin etc. Socialism is supposed to be the phase of communism (the lowest phase) where society transitions from top-down control to bottom-up control, but it can't do that by consolidating control within a strong central state, whatever the justification (like external imperialist pressures). It is fine to talk about "better" or "more democratic" or "socialist movements" and other things of that nature (so long as they're accurate, and not mislabeled for expedience), but leave claims of "socialism" and "socialist economy" out of it so that the job of socialists advocating for socialism is not hindered by expedience feeding the need to feel vindicated. Calling it "real existing socialism" hurts the socialist movement even more than right wingers slinging mud because it comes from people who claim to want socialism, who point to people like Marx and Lenin as the basis for their arguments, and who subsequently REJECT the arguments of Marx and Lenin etc by supporting their examples of "real existing socialism" as socialism. Otherwise this is a really good video that highlights some important things that capitalists WILL NOT allow themselves to think about.

Love these video essays. A little criticism that is easily remedied is your use of terms such as 'insanely effective' and overuse of the term 'literally' when you mean 'actually', 'ironically', 'specifically', etc. These terms are colloquial and a bit sloppy in otherwise solidly written narrative. Ditch them going forward and the essays will be more precise and authoritative. You also use the old fashioned 'he' and 'men' when describing citizens or humans. The old academics lived in a more sexist time. We don't these days. I urge you to reflect this. ('they' or alternating with 'he' and 'she' is surely more inclusive, representative and egalitarian). This is entirely false. _Maybe_ some full-on right-libertarians/anarcho-capitalists believe this in a theoretical sense, but they're irrelevant anyway because their ideal system contradicts itself at every turn, being anti-statist but requiring a state to preserve private property, and thus can never exist. But besides that, the people that have the real power and control 90% of the wealth are not as ideologically free-market as they would have you believe, and that's the point made in the video. The fact is, at every turn, through systemically explainable turns of events, private property gives rise to inequality, and those benefiting from this inequality utilise it to maintain their positions in the system. States literally rose out of this need in the first place. This cycle will always repeat itself as long as there is private property. The propertied will always buy power and policy from the government, and if no government exists, they will make one.

Great video. I don't think anyone disagreeing has actually watched it. You can disagree with one or two assertions but the general point is amply made and isn't so easily refuted. As an example, I think it's a bit crude to compare death tolls, and I think it's crude either to compare all of capitalism's deaths to the alleged death count of only 70 years of socialism, or to pick 70 years of capitalism to compare. But it's none the less very clear capitalism is the deadlier system. One system seeks to prioritise human life whilst the other wants to play 8D chess and tell you if we're greedy enough and let 1% of the world control 90% of its resources, then somehow it will all work out better for everyone than if we just went with a system that is designed to benefit people.

Millions of Americans have to work two full time jobs to afford a studio apartment AND go to college full time simultaneously. This leaves them with about 2 hours of sleep every single night, for 4 to 6 years until they can finish their degree and (hopefully) find a single job working for some corporation that will afford them a (very basic) living. It's no wonder why depression, anxiety, pill dependency, and suicidality is so prevalent in America. Completely insane.......

@@Greenlantern957 Sure thing buddy, I definitely believe your lies, now how about you go ask a native american exactly what capitalism is about (rich benefactors stealing and crushing anyone who stands in their way) go and ask them - if you could find one, because you see... CERTAIN PEOPLE, made finding them a task that is just a tiny little bit difficult... oh, and also 150M Indians, hundreds of millions of African slaves and 20 million third world victims MURDERED every single year by extracting their precious resources and distributing none of them back because dollar signs matter to your exploitation built system more than human lives. I'm sure all those Vietnamese students were like "thank you for bombing our civilians sir, you sure did free us real good!" man, I wonder why MLK (definitely not a pro-reperations socialist) opposed that war if it was so justified, truly a mystery...

This is why I had this argumentative debate of discussion to my mother about how socialist revolutions have failed because they had to fail so they can uplift the brutal regime and free market and mixed marketing of Capitalism. It is through indoctrination, propaganda to propagate that ideology of Socialist Revolutions throughout the globe have failed but they did not fail because they were counterproductive. They failed because of the Capitalist Elites not wanting these revolutions to succeed. They either wanted them to fail and decline itself. It was just forced imperial core and corruption of corporate control of these countries and the population who advocate for equity not equality. You all get the “fair” share of the game of the wealth.

I wish the left was less sectarian, I'm an autonomist(basically just libertarian socialism but uses Marxist material analysis) and the division in the dozens of sects on the left is a large reason why capitalism still reigns supreme today. Although we may disagree ideologically, we all share one common objective; the abolition of class society and private ownership. Leftist unity is an unrealistic goal at this point, but we're probably going to need it. Thank you for the very informative piece youve made, I was sorta beginning to lose faith in this whole thing but after this my resolve has only bolstered.
