I grew up with my parents using a percolator. Later, we talked my mom into getting a "modern" MrCoffee drip. She never liked the drip maker coffee as well as the percolator coffee. Said it wasn't as "smooth". I recently found a used percolator at a church yard sale and picked it up for 3 dollars. So glad I did. It was almost like new and I love the coffee it makes. My mom was right.Very smooth coffee. I gave my drip maker away.

The problem with Drip coffee makers is that the paper filter removed the coffee oils and takes away that "creamy" texture percolated coffee has.

I grew up in a Colombian home (my grandfather actually had coffee growing on his plantation in Antioquia). We were a hardcore coffee drinking family. Even the aging miniature Pinscher dog got coffee milk in her bowl to get her going in the morning. My mom and the rest of us, transplanted to New Orleans drank exclusively Cafe Du Monde coffee & chicory brewed in her mid-century modern electric percolator! In her opinion that was real coffee. How times have changed.

When I was growing up, we had an all glass Pyrex percolator where you could watch the entire percolating process. I personally don't care for this brewing method but it filled the entire house with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. You knew it was morning! :)

I absolutely love perked coffee. Funny thing is o never owned one as a kid. I mostly switched to one because I'm trying to avoid plastics. Hot water should never be touching plastic. You're just filling yourself up with harmful chemicals. Since perks are pretty much just stainless steel and glass, they avoid all those issues. Most don't have fancy things like timers, but thats easy enough to fix with a timer or a smart switch.
@Angel-gb9gi
@Angel-gb9gi 2 года назад
Its nice to know im not the only one afraid of the plastic residue in my coffee. My mr. Coffee pot made horrible horibble tasting coffee, i washed it out a fozen times to finally realize it was the plastic i was tasting that maxe it so horribly tasting. Im scared to buy another coffee maker. I went back to instant coffee sad when instant coffee taste is way bettter than mr. Coffee.
@apAvocado
@apAvocado 2 года назад
@@Angel-gb9gi they still sell stainless steel percolators. You should buy one. Use a basket filter in the metal basket to capture the “oils” that can raise your cholesterol. Plus, the paper basket filter (8-12 cup size) keeps the coffee grounds out of your coffee. Poke a tiny hole with a paring knife to get the paper filter into the basket over the metal tube.
@Angel-gb9gi

@@apAvocado my husband bought a 4 cup aluminum travel percolator at a pawn shop and I didn't care for it. It took longer than I wanted to wait and it was a pain to clean and the coffe was not near as good as my folgers instant coffee. I have given up on all coffee makers and just use instant. Easy clean up, no appliance on my counter, it takes 2 minutes to drink and I prefer the taste. Glad my husband bought that cheap percolator so I didn't waste money on something I would not of liked.
@apAvocado
@apAvocado 2 года назад
@@Angel-gb9gi brewing coffee in anything aluminum will definitely taste terrible!
@Angel-gb9gi
@Angel-gb9gi 2 года назад
@@apAvocado yeah I am not for sure it was aluminum but it looked like it to me. I used it just to see if a percolator would be for me and I realized I don't like to wait for coffee in the morning and I don't like the clean up or having to store it. I guess instant works for me. My son really liked having a coffee maker but the coffee maker made horrible plastic smelling coffee but he still liked it as I went back to instant but when the coffee pot broke he wanted another one but it was so scared to get another plastic smelling and horrible coffee maker that I decided on the stainless steal percolator but later realized me and my son would be fine with instant until we run into a good coffee maker at someones house that makes great coffee without the plastic smell or bad taste.

Well done. Two times I had to throw out filtered water and coffee because the stem not centered. Short cord was a plus to prevent all the kids getting severe burns by being able to touch the cord. It happened often with longer cords. Great video.

I have a different model, though the same principle. I noticed that the lid on the basket was very loose, which allowed a lot of grounds getting into my coffee. I alleviated the problem by buying some small rubber O-rings at the hardware store, a bit smaller than the basket shaft. Keeps the basket lid nice and tight, and almost no grounds. Great video, by the way. Thanks...

Sometimes you just gotta go a little bonkers. And these days, with the pandemic, things are naturally bonkers everywhere you go. Better living when you can survive the virus apocalypse, with a hot cup of coffee, while watching the neighbors act strangely on their front lawn in the morning. Oh wait, is she walking her coffee pot down the sidewalk? HAHA :D

Do the markers for the ground coffee correspond to 2 tablespoons per cup of coffee? What if I weigh my coffee? Will the basket accommodate this amount of coffee? Do the markers also correspond to ground coffee by weight?

@helpfulnatural 7 лет назад
I wasn't really sure what the purpose of that ritual was. Did it change/improve the coffee flavor at all? I save egg shells to grind up for a calcium supplement for both my pets and in my garden. They smell kind of bad. :( Can't imagine what that would taste like in coffee.
@helpfulnatural
@helpfulnatural 7 лет назад
I suppose it might defeat the purpose of percolator coffee but you could try using a paper filter inside the basket to keep the grounds contained, maybe?
@nab-rk4ob
@nab-rk4ob 7 лет назад
Some say it is to take the bitter or strong flavor from the coffee. Others say it helps with keeping the grounds from getting in your pour, which is why I tried it. It didn't help.

For years I used Farberware Electric Percolators. For the last 10 years, had an 8 cup Farberware, a 4 cup Farberware, an 8 cup Hamilton Beach ---- they all only lasted a few months. Huge cracks at the base where the black plastic starts. So frustrated. I love electric percolators --- but people give most of them BAD reviews.

Well, you know what they say, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. I like a hot cup of coffee, cause once I put in the liquid creamer, it will cool it down. If the coffee is only warm coming out, it will be cold after creaming it up. Well, I am not one to walk my percolator, but all things we love must be kept on a short leash. Love your humor, and yes, I remember the good ole days.

I need an electric perculator with a timer or strength changer basically. I bought a perculator, I think it was the Presto one and it doesnt brew long enough to make good coffee. It just gets to boil and stops brewing. It wont be good unless it brews it for a few minutes or so. I dont know whats wrong with all these perculators but Ive literally only seen like 1 decent one on the market, that has a timer, so I bought that one and love it. WTF though? GOd all these other ones suck, or I dont know what Im doing wrong then.

Take a large unscented kleenex, poke a center hole in it, fill it, in the basket, with your ground coffee. Then wrap the kleenex over the top, piercing enough holes in each corner to hold it on the center post. Then perk. Then all you have to do is remove the kleenex. And not pay $.50 per filter if you buy filters for the same purpose.

That's a common saw, but if you think about how coffee brewing works, you should be able to figure out why that's a silly knock on the percolator method. All methods strengthen the infusion through the course of brewing by doing essentially just that, one way or another.
