In the 1800's Charles Goodnight revived the population of bison in the panhandle. Their descendants now captured live in Caprock Canyon State Park.

Been to Caprock Canyon several times for hiking. Fantastic place, free of the commercialization that's taken over Palo Duro Canyon. The bison are a big plus.

We visited Caprock Canyons State Park in spring of 2020. It is a very lovely park. Beautiful canyon areas. One grassy spot had thousands of tiny yellow flowers. There was also a prairie dog town and the little prairie dogs were running around. We saw at least two bison who came very close to our vehicle but weren't bothered by us at all. There is also a small lake there and spaces to camp. It is a truly beautiful park and ideal for visiting.

My next trip is going to this beautiful place. Living in North Texas for so many years and not going.... Shame on me. They are such incredible creatures. I have been up close to them in Yellowstone back in the late 1970s and again in 83. Awesome 👍 thanks TCR. Love your show.

Last of the "Wild" bison all are branded and tagged. I guess in this century that's about as close to "wild" as you will find in the U.S. for most species.

“ When Mrs. Goodnight realized the inevitable wiping out of the buffalo she urged her husband to endeavor to preserve them. He set aside at her request 600 acres from his great ranch of 60,000 acres for buffalo park. In a letter telling of his start as a buffalo raiser, Mr. Goodnight said: “In the spring of 1879- to be exact, May 15th- at my wife’s request, started out to look for some young buffalo. At last I found a few younger ones in Palo Duro canyon, and ‘roped’ them from horseback. The month following W.W. Dyer, my wife’s brother, caught two young females. From this start we have now a herd of forty-five purebred buffaloes. In 1884 I began to cross them with Polled Angus and Galloway cattle, and have a herd of sixty of these cross-breeds. This year we have been fortunate in getting fifteen buffalo calves.”

Those bison need their own home undisturbed. It was a shame that they were ruthlessly slaughted in the first place.

Well that’s the only way you can maintain record of a species that there’s so few of unfortunately. If one gets out or is poached it’s a good way to track where it came from. It’s more of a shame we have to keep them contained within a fence. I think we as the human race have come way too far advanced for our own good and it may benefit us to slow it down or even step it back a few notches

Utah has two herds since 1893. I saw one herd at Antelope Island from a distance. It's good that people 100 years ago knew it was wrong to kill off the species.

The hunts of the 1870s and 1880s were not truly "hunting". It was industrialized slaughter on an a massive scale - with hunters sometimes shooting from railroad cars. The hides were taken, and the meat left to spoil. Bleached bones littered the plains for many years. Please don't say it was sport - or "hunting". 🐃 🤷‍♂️
@jeep146
@jeep146 4 года назад
Texas at the time had Indians that would not stay on reservations. It was decided to destroy the herds, this was the primary reason for there destruction. William Tecumseh Sherman beginning in the late 1860s, he organized the killing of some 5 million bison in an effort to drive the creatures to the brink of extinction.
@Freekniggers

@Hillary Clintubnear extinction IS a waste..after all that prosperity that the buzzards and coyotes experienced it all slammed down on them on the rebound no telling how many starved and were diseased the more starved they became.
