Capsizing Tarka, our Westray 16 sailing dinghy

We put Tarka, our Westray 16 sailing dinghy, through a trial capsize at Stewartby Lake. We would like to see what might happen if we ever suffered an accidental capsize. The results are a bit surprising, but do we have serious problems?

That was great to see, many thanks for sharing. I have a 17ft trailer sailer with enclosed berths, unpractical to capsize like this, but this is thought provoking all the same. Hope we see your trip on the Broads, sailed there many times myself.

Thanks, glad you liked it! I don’t think everyone needs to capsize test their boat. It just seemed like the simplest way to answer a lot of questions in my case!

A good learning experience. I must put new hatches on my 11 foot dinghy. I was surprised to see you totally immersing your trailer and the back of your car !! I try never to do this as I don't want to be constantly changing wheel bearings. Lovely boat, hope you get much joy out of her.

Thanks very much! Fresh water lake so shouldn’t do much harm, although I have had to immerse the trailer in salt water too - no other way to float the boat - but I’d use a rope to keep the car out of the water if possible. I know the Westray was intended to have a combi trailer, but that’s a big investment. Cleaning the bearings is a cheaper option for the time being! 🙂

Hi I think I am now number 24 subscriber. Any way liking your video very much. On the last video you had trouble with your head sail coming back a little, I would have a look at the Peak ( the top of the sail) and make sure it’s free the run.

Thanks very much Captain Mark! I will check the head of the jib next time I put the mast up. I think the twisting was starting at the tack, but not 100% sure now!

I had Westray No. 3 until a few months ago. When we first bought her we did a capsize test, and found no more than a cup or two of water in the buoyancy tanks. We replaced the hatch gaskets, smeared them with a hint of silicone grease, took care when tightening them (not too tight!) and had no problems thereafter. The way the water gushed out of your hatches (or at least, the one we see in the video) suggests they're not sealing at all properly. I'd be tempted to replace the gaskets, make sure the hatches are seating properly, then try again - that might be all you need to do!

Tank you for this video. The next test would be to try to go back on board... when you are in deep water (when your feet don't touch the ground). It is quite different... but it is another subject...🙂

Thank you. Yes I agree, it could be worth checking. And most difficult when she’s floating high - i.e. if you’ve fallen overboard, rather than capsized. Maybe I’ll try that next summer!…

Not a good recovery in that you beached her in order to bail. Non watertight buoyancy tanks would probably keep her unsailable. However, you did find a potentially fatal flaw in your boat. Replace seals annually and vaseline around the seals on the bulkheads. Consider to install a sealable entry valve for an air pump. Use a pump with a gauge. Each tank to withstand 2 bar test air pressure for half an hour. Well done.

Thanks, sounds like good advice! She was afloat just off the beach for baling, not aground. With the seals fitted, I’m happy now that the tanks are watertight enough for our purposes, but if we were to go for something really adventurous I would probably consider buying buoyancy bags to put into the tanks and possibly under the benches in the stern, for 100% leak-free buoyancy 🙂

Very good video Whale gusher hand pump needed. Are the seams inside watertight?

Thanks very much! A hand pump is on my shopping list, I’ll make sure I look at the Whale gusher. I think I might know what was causing most of leakage into the buoyancy tanks, hoping to investigate further tomorrow and release another video soon after.
