I love this guy! He's willing to sit and analyse superheroes for almost fifteen minutes, but he also completely loves being a Catholic! There's a guy not afraid to truly live life to the fullest.
YAY!!! He's always been my favorite. I loved it in the Avengers movie where the Black Widow says, "These guys basically are gods" and he responds, "There's only one God, ma'am, and I'm pretty sure that He doesn't dress that way".
My two PASSIONS - Catholicism and Superheroes! I literally teared up when you got to Captain America. This is the best, deeply theological examination of our Faith using modern, everyday examples that I've ever heard and borders on what Jesus did with parables. I can't thank you enough for this amazing homily... Right when I needed it most... At the start of this Lent 2016. God bless!
Thanks Father Mike! "There's only one God, ma'am, and I'm pretty sure He doesn't dress like that." (I met you at Steubenville West. I was the kid backstage who used Chosen for Confirmation.)
TheSeptacle He was raised in New York City in 1920’s-30’s at that time the Catholic Church was the prominent church in the city and it was almost culturally unacceptable not to be Catholic. It would be very unlikely that he was raised in another denomination.
I’m so happy I found Father Mike...I was in sin and was separated from our Father. I feel that the merciful God pushed me to this channel to hear his word through Mike. He puts everything into such an easy way to consume and relates on such a level that I don’t feel like I’m being talked down to or he is rambling on. I also get emotional during some of his videos and I have no idea why. Thanks Mike, God bless, Glory be to God!
Father's face at 1:03 when he says he'd settle for Robin, hahaha. In another video from Ascension Presents (Caffeinated Conversations) he talks about how he almost got cast as Robin in a movie once.
Yes!!! Fr. Mike, you’re so right. Steve Rogers has always been my favorite Avenger... now I realize it’s because he reminded me most of Christ. He never thought about what he needed, but rather what he could do for the world just as himself. When he got his happy ending at the end of Endgame, I have to admit it was the scene that made me cry like a baby.
Night Crawler is actually my favorite super hero because he's a Catholic monk who's very open about his faith and is constantly preaching the gospel. Great video though. :)
I simply want to thank Fr. Mike for all these amazing videos. I don't know if I would still be alive if it weren't for your words of wisdom. You have helped me grow stronger in my faith. Thank you so much!
Are you kidding!! These videos ALWAYS ALWAYSSS help me in sooooo many ways!! I was just baptized Catholic this past Easter vigil and honestly I have so many questions constantly so every single night this is how I relax and get all my questions answered since I cant just bother everyone all the time lol YOU ARE THE BEST!! Thank you thank you thank you thank youuuuuuuu!!!!!
If you also like superheroes & philosophy, check out "Batman & Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the Soul". It takes many philosophical questions, frames them in the person of Batman & explains the concepts.
It's 3.30am here in Malaysia and I just watched the Avengers movie about 2 hours ago and have been sitting up with my CCC & Youcat trying to figure out, "God, what is Grace???". Well, I think God really wants me to go to bed cos he literally just made y'all upload this video and answer my questions. Thank you and God bless. :)
As Father Mike you are such a better hero, if you will, then if you were Robin. Am so glad your a Priest as apposed to a HollyWood Inspirational speaker. I'm a pretty new follower but an old man physically, at times, but I can tell you'll feel small when you stand beside the ocean for a long time to come. That can be a wonderful gift. You're truly a wonderful tool for the Lord. Keep the faith Fr. Mike. God's doing great things through you.
@zadose Catholicism is the right way? Despite the belief with saints and Mary which make Jesus seem less powerful and in need of a help from people who were in some part of their life fallen too?
@@Ana-rb6gj I could write a lengthy post about the communion of saints, but Fr. Mike already has a wonderful, beautiful video about it that is much better than anything I could ever write. Jesus does not need "help" and Mary and the other saints are not helping Jesus; they're helping us. And we do need all the help we can get! How are they helping us? I suggest you watch Fr. Mike's video ;^) Cheers!
Steve Rodgers also stood for what was right during “civil war” he knew Bucky was pure at ♡ and he stood against the government and Iron man! He is the purest! The most Christian superhero!
Couldn't say it better! I always loved Steve Rogers, and when I learned that he believes in one true living God, I was so happy, because it makes so much sense that he has goodness of God.
Peter Parker/Spider-Man is a great example. He is changed from within & made a better version of himself by accepting an external force. With great power must come great responsibility. Peter still struggles to take the gift (grace) he was given & apply it best to help others. However, just because he has this gift doesn't mean Peter doesn't continue to struggle in his relationships with women, with work, with paying his bills or keeping Aunt May safe.
Father Mike...I love you man!! LoL..You are like the best friend I never had . God bless you and Thank you Father. I'm sharing this one with all of my friends. 😉✌️✝️
Using my favourite genre to explain Grace. Top-notch stuff Padre. Has to check out the RU-vid recording as I noticed it wasn't complete on various podcasting platforms
Just saw this and I really liked what he had to say. As a superhero fan all my life I've actually used these characters when teaching others about life lessons.
I teach in a Catholic school second grade and I have superhero figures in my room. It's a good segue when my students ask why I like heroes. I even came up with my own Christian/hero oath.
I have never been able to clearly explain why Cap is my favorite superhero, and here it is in words! Simply amazing, and thoughtfully presented ^_^ P. S. I have to #askfrmike though... What do you think about the most recent news (SPOILER)... ... ... ... that Cap was Hydra all along? @Ascension Presents
I’m not catholic I’m Protestant Seventh Day Adventist but bless u brother in Christ this video is amazing combining superheroes and Christ really cool. 😎
Fr. Mike - just FYI - i was heart broken as a kid when my mom revealed my dream of being a superhero when i grew up was not gonna happen....you weren't the only one who wanted to be Superman or Batman (or Robin ) when he grew up...
It's 2022, post-Infinity War Endgame, I wonder if Fr Mike's opinion has changed about Tony Stark lol. This is such a good video! Comic book heroes, our Catholic faith....you can't go wrong
When I was collecting comic books, Cap was one of my unspoken favorites - I admired his righteousness and never-say-die attitude. While many other Marvel characters eventually made a decision or acted in a manner that was morally wrong or ambiguous, I always saw Cap do the right thing. I was especially touched by his reflection on the value of life after Machinesmith revealed that he had duped Cap into helping him commit suicide in "Captain America" volume 1 issue 249. (Machinesmith survived Cap's attack and apparently gave up on committing suicide and resumed his criminal career.)
Steve Rogers aka Captain America is my fave Marvel Superhero..and I can relate to him in lots of ways..and can I add that Captain America's shield can be reflected as the cross, we Catholics use as a weapon and symbol of our faith. Thank you Father for your reflections and you remind me of one of also my fave priest here in my country who already passed away due to complications of Covid 19. He's been my spiritual guide and now I got a new one in you.
hi Father.. I just found your podcast and I LOVE THEM!! and this is a fantastic topic that I lovee.. Catholicism and Captain America. yay, thx a lot. lots of love and please pray for us in Indonesia. God Bless!!
This is awesome. You always have tge best way to explain things I have just recently started watching your videos and you have done so much for me. Many questions have been answered and explained. Thank you!
Father Mike, look into Marvel's Daredevil character. In the comic book he is actually Catholic and struggles constantly with having to protect the city but hurting those he is protecting against; there is an actual priest character which Daredevil consistently goes to for confession. His Actual sanctuary, hide out, is a Catholic church in Hell's kitchen, NY. Actually, i personally feel that the writers for the Daredevil Netflix series did a great job incorporating the church and the character's struggles with his Catholic faith. Season 2 actually amplifies the moral strufgle when he is confronted with his antagonist, the Punisher, who just wants to blow everyone away. Please check it out. It is truly a great, moral Character and awesome story
This is excellent. I think it will capture my 11yo son's attention to get him thinking deeper about his faith. I look forward to watching more of your videos with my family as we discover together what it means to be more than just a believer.
As a superhero fan, I am happy 😊to know that Fr. Mike loves superheroes. Thank you for using modern pop - culture to explain the meaning of being a catholic . Also I'm like Shazam most of the time. I will have to try a lot harder to give up my alter ego.
Superman isn’t Superman because he has powers. He’s Superman because he was raised by good people in Kansas. Captain America isn’t Captain America because of the serum. He’s Captain America because he as good immovable values (that come from God ;) )
Fr. Schmitz! Love your RU-vid videos AND your podcasts! You do a great job explaining things so that anyone could understand them. Even my non-Christian nerdy fiancé liked this. 😀.
Thank you Fr. Mike I see what you are saying about Captain America and he actually is one of my favorites in the Marvel Universe. But I find that each hero has elements of Christ rather than one being the best representation of Christ. In Avengers 1, I thought that at the end it was Iron Man that exemplified Christ on the Cross when he was flying into the portal to launch the rocket into outter space. For me that reminded me of Christ giving his last breath on the cross....giving his all. I think Steve Rogers has valor and loyalty, but I don't know if he is the necessary the best Christian. I'm thinking that he is probably the best model of what an American Soldier should be (give me liberty or give me death). My argument; furthermore, to this would be the fact that Steve Rogers likes to fight physically. And in many cases, Captain Rogers says "we fight (literally not just spiritually)." If Steve Rogers was a good Christian he would literally lay down his shield and turn the other cheek. In this sense, I think Superman has the best model of "If you live by the sword, you shall die by the sword"; if you notice in most Superman comics, he doesn't throw the first punch or kick or laser beams. Superman stands there and acts as a barrier rather than an attacker. He subdues the opponent rather than pummeling the opponent. And he literally takes hits from that of Darkseid and Doomsday. I think Green Lantern exercises the Thomastic virtue of the "will" where Hal Jordan strength is based on his will power to keep focus or in a sense to "to keep the faith" or "to hold on." What I do find very Christian for the Justice League is that there is an underlying rule: "we do not kill" These are my thoughts. Your video Fr. Mike got me super excited as I am a fan of the Marvel and DC comics.
This is the first time I have watched this video, it's awesome. It made me emotional towards the end. Thank you father, God bless you and your family abundantly always! God bless the team and their families abundantly always! 🙂🙏🏼❤️
👍 for Captain America. After being told that Thor is a basically a god- Cap responds- "There's only one God ma'am, and I'm pretty sure he doesnt dress like that..." 👍
Captain america is protestant but he is a great example of a good Christian. He go to the church, he respect his chastity and never sleep with any woman. He develop his virtues to the best. My favourite hero is Daredevil, he is catholic. He has a lot of wounds and he heal all his wounds. Devoted Catholic that go to reconciliation because we are not perfect. Everyone knows that Daredevil is Matt Murdock and he does not have secrets. He is the new batman. Catholicism shows how we you go down, continue, recovery and being with God. By the way, the alter-ego of Clark Ken is Superman.
Hey FrMike, love your videos. Definitely making me think a lot more and aspire to be a better catholic. Just watching this video and the initial part inspired me to ask this question. What are the views about the dinosaurs in terms of catholic belief? Kind Regards
I'm limited in my knowledge of him to the Netflix show, but in that show he doesn't really live his faith very well. He seeks council with his priest, yes, but ultimately the only way it affects his conduct is he chooses not to kill anyone because of "thou shalt not kill", but it doesn't seem to guide his actions otherwise.
Tharein Potuhera No, that’s exactly and only what you’re supposed to judge people on. You can’t judge their heart and soul because you can’t see into their minds and know what they’re thinking. But you are absolutely supposed to judge their actions.
Toddler : Mom is this bat man ? His mom :No he is our father Mike and that is his chasuble Father Mike : No am the superman and I can be the bat man too Toddler : wooooha...
A very interesting video! Though doesn't Cap's inability to lose his powers sorta imply "once saved always saved"? Or would " salvation" in this analogy be the mantle of "Captain America" rather than his super-fitness itself?
I would argue that, when Batman's written well, he's not as heretical. Batman is a broken but virtuous man. He has rules he follows, but it's not just Batman's own will that he pulled himself up by. First of all, it's the gifts he was born with (his money, his intelligence, and the people who care about him), as well as other people whom he guides. In a way, Batman's a lot like Peter, because he denies the good in a lot of ways, but in the end he's one of the greatest heroes.
