#78 Thank You for a fine video. Back in June of 1978, I wheeled the Badger as a passenger, from Ludington to Milwaukee's slip. Probably the only non crew member to do so! I knew the Captain very well as we worked together earlier on the Carferry, SS City of Green Bay, I was at the Helm on the 3 Mate's watch. I'm glad the SS Badger was saved for everyone to enjoy!!

I'm glad this, and other videos, are available for everyone to see. Captain Dean Hobbs was a seasoned Captain of many years, and just a really good guy, and I really enjoyed sailing with him. This short film was made not long before his passing, and he is missed among the passengers and crews he sailed with.

I've been on the Badger several times. It's always amazing to watch them turn that big ship around and back her right to that spot.

I rode the bager twice. Once in September 1981 they put my car on the aft deck & my wife & kids & I rode it across. The kids were 3 & 2 at the time, so we got a room & after eating lunch in the dinning room, we retired to out state room & took a nap. Slid the glass window up & pulled the metal shaded vent window down. Made the room dark but we could hear the bow wash through the slits in the metal shaded. Very peaceful, still can hear it whoose whoose!. They has R.R cars in the belly back then. The second time was in 1997. We square danced on the bow all the way across with square dancers from all over Wisconsin. They told us to remember that Michigan is on Eastern Time zone. One of the grandma's brought her grandsons along. They went down town to play at an arcade while we square danced on the the dock with the Michigan square dancers.they forgot about the time change & missed the boat. Grandma was so worried about the boys. The crew assured her that they would contact the city police, who would pick them up & keep them at the station until she returned. I heard later that she had to ride back across that same night & get them, then ride back to Manitowoc Wisconsin again. Three trips in one day because of those boys.

Usually a gyro compass makes a sound like that when the ship moves a quarter degree from the current heading. I worked for LMC/PM on there Tug/Barge (as well as with a few other Great Lakes Ships).

When the captain (white hat) arrives in the rear pilot house, who is the other captain looking person (whirt shirt, shoulder badges, black hat) that soon disappears? Would be neat to see the coordination for docking (I know an anchor is temporarily thrown to turn the ship 180 degrees but when are the engines thrown in reverse (and I assume there is a neutral coast period) When the captain is in the rear pilot house for docking, does he use the wheel or is steering strictly done by varying the engines? Heard the engine telegraph bells going off quite a bit.

why does the ss badger have 2 whistles. One very loud multi-chime horn, as well as a older sounding single chime horn? when is each used?
@railsrust
@railsrust 6 лет назад
It's up to the captain. One works on air and the other works on steam. I think it's largely redundancy. If one doesn't work, the other will. Funny enough, there's recordings of both playing together, and they sound heavenly like that.
@bluerazor7049
@bluerazor7049 5 лет назад
The steam whistle is a Leslie Tyfon-300-DVE wich the SS Alpena and the badher have but alpena has 2 Lelslie 300's while the badger has one along with the Airchime whistle.

what kind of horn is that at 5:48 it doesn't sound like a Khalenberg. 3:35, what's that horn? why do they have 2 different sounding(one single and one dual tone)horns?
@bluerazor7049
@bluerazor7049 4 года назад
At 3:35 is the original Leslie-300-DVE steam horn the Badger came with. Many steam powered freighters had these like the AAA-Class freighters (Anderson, Callaway, Clarke ect). Today only the SS Alpena, Edward. L. Ryerson and J.A.W Iglehart have the Leslie 300's. At 5:43 those are some kind of Airchime horns. Capt. Hobbs how had since passed away used to blow the steam and airchime horns together!
@wilfstor3078
@wilfstor3078 Месяц назад
As previously stated the first horn is a Leslie Typhon DVE-300 that uses steam from the boiler The other horn is an air horn manufactured by Kahlenberg, it's model is the T-4

What kind of horns are they using?
@michaelwinnemuller3308

Cool video... I have a couple of quick questions. What makes the clicking or clumping sound on the bridge as the ship is being turned just prior to backing into the dock? What does the center Chadburn do or is used for as Captian Hobbs is backing into the dock? I know the Badger has 2 screws...and I see the 2 telegraphs to control them?
@bt25
@bt25 5 лет назад
The center telegraph relays steering commands from the fore bridge to the docking bridge in the event the main wheel fails. The emergency wheel on the docking bridge can be set up and the ship steered from the docking bridge. Since the only windows face aft, a telegraph is necessary to convey what's ahead. The telegraph has 9 positions, from L to R: Hard Left, Left, Steady, All Clear, Amidship (center top), Not Clear, Steady, Right, Hard Right. The terms Port and Starboard are not used. The telegraph is left in All Clear until the Captain leaves the fore bridge to begin the docking procedure, at which point the helmsman signals Amidship.
@bnkwupt
@bnkwupt 8 лет назад
What's the significance of three long, two short on the horns? All I can think of is going astern to port, as that isn't a standard signal. Also, what is the Chadburn to the right of the wheel?
@stanpatterson5033
@stanpatterson5033 7 лет назад
I think that the Chadburn we can see on the main bridge to the right of the wheel corresponds to the Chadburn we can see behind the Captain when he is on the aft bridge guiding the stern into the dock. I believe that particular Chadburn is how the Captain communicates his wishes for rudder positioning between the aft bridge and main bridge. When he stands at the aft window, there are the 2 Chadburns beside him, one on either side of him, which tell the engine room what to do as far as port and starboard propeller control, and the single Chadburn which would be behind him, is to relay to the Helmsman (at the wheel) how to set the rudder.

3:36 why is he blowing the steam whistle that way, when I have never seen it done that way in person...
@jimmymerryman08
@jimmymerryman08 9 лет назад
That is the Master Salute. We blow this every time we hit port. More or less a Badger tradition!
@romainetomatoes2416
@romainetomatoes2416 9 лет назад
Jim Merryman I meant why is he PULLING A CABLE! why isn't he using the usual hand valve!
@jimmymerryman08
@jimmymerryman08 9 лет назад
Because the steam to the whistle valve comes straight from the engine room. The whistle itself is roughly 100 feet behind the pilot house.
@romainetomatoes2416
@romainetomatoes2416 9 лет назад
Jim Merryman When I rode the Badger last summer, the new captain used a different valve, not the cable... Yes. he also blew the steam whistle. Was that valve broken at the time of this video? (Check out my video on my channel).
@jimmymerryman08
@jimmymerryman08 9 лет назад
No, the Badger has two whistles. One being steam which is operated by the cable and the other being a compressed air whistle operated by the brass handle under the blue rag on the window sill. That actuates the valve for the compressed air. Each Captain has their own style and preference as to which whistle and salute he blows.
