Captain James Cook: The incredible true story of the World's Greatest Navigator and Cartographer

Captain James Cook, a British Navigator, Cartographer and explorer was one of the pre-eminent sailors and innovators of his age. Now a controversial figure for indigenous cultures who see him as the instigator and symbol of European colonial expansion and genocide; the real James Cook was actually quite a different man to what has been imagined. Coming from abject poverty in rural Yorkshire England; raised among the pacifist and hard working Quakers, he dreamed of sailing to far off lands in the pacific since he was a boy. Working as an apprentice aboard a grubby Whitby Cat collier, he soon proved himself a hard working and competent sailor. He was later to join the Royal Navy and sail to Canada, taking part in the siege of Louisburg and Quebec, while learning the cartography and surveying skills that were to revolutionise the Navy from that time on. James Cook circumnavigated the globe three times, charted approximately a third of the unknown coastlines of the globe; beginning with his first voyage aboard the Endeavour, with Naturalists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. He was the first man to sail below, and above the 70th parallel, and his regime of hygiene and fresh food revolutionised the management of scurvy while at sea. For this, he was admitted as a fellow to the Royal Society, as well as raised from the rank of Master, to Lieutenant and then Post Captain -something that would otherwise have caused a scandal among the high society gentry, if it were not for his incredible reputation. In all three of his major voyages, spanning twenty years, he never lost one crew member to the disease, which was an astonishing achievement when compared to a 40% plus death rate that was typical of long range voyages in the time preceding his. His untimely murder in Hawaii robbed the world of a humble, humane and dedicated leader, whose legacy now risks being tarnished by historical revisionists more focused on political activism than historical reality.

The fact that Cook came from a poor family, and excelled so high based purely on MERIT & good principles, despite the discrimination of him for not being a Gentleman, is absolutely astounding and shows what an individual can accomplish despite their position in life.

Back in the year 1999 I was in Newport Harbor S. California when a replica of the James Cook sailing ship on a world tour was docked at the Newport Marine Museum and I had a opportunity to board her. By today’s standards it was small and the living space between the deck area set up for the soldiers on board for protection was no more than five feet high. To imagine leaving port headed out on the open sea and not knowing what is over the horizon or how long before you reached land and if your food and supply’s would last etc. really made me realize how brave Captain Cook and his sailors were. Truly exceptional and talented men who we owe a gratitude of thanks for expanding our knowledge of the world.😂

@taneh-d4065 Funny how Tupaia didn't know about New Zealand. Funny how pottery skills were as far as Tonga and Samoa, but not New Zealand. Also, it'll be silly not to use a guide when there's one. One who's place of birth was "stolen" by other Polynesians. He was of great use in New Zealand (which Cook went to because of Tasman's discovery) as he could communicate. None of that in Australia though, nor did he know Australia existed. Cook was a great man and so was Tupaia.

@@PortugalZeroworldcup idk about the 4 other crew men but I do know that when he tried kidnapping the king of hawai'i island, (trying to make the islanders fearful) we surrounded the king innstead. to be disrespectful as was captain cook meant death. all would go through such a punishment, even another chief. and so, captain cook fell, and his throat slit. becaue he was a man of high status, tradition goes, as he was buried like that of a chief. your flesh melted from your bones, sometimes dismembered to do such, and hidden away in the caves of the chiefs. because he was foreign, not all of his body belonged on the island, so his behind and onne hand was given in respect.

In my opinion from going to Easter island, Peru, Mexico, Egypt, honestly believe we as modern humans are missing huge history before the great flood at the end of the ice age and way before. Too many amazing impossible engineering triumphs we cannot achieve even today with that much precision even with g.p.s.. history is written by the victors obviously, since the perceived losers, don’t get to publish and distribute lies to their subjects. A dog cud figure out that humans make up and lie to boast their theory or position for money, greed, power, safety even. Every story, human history story should be re-examined, so that we learn from the past to not repeat the mistakes by promoting lies from the start.

This was one of the most well presented documentaries I have seen in quite a while. I was born in New Zealand and came to Australia at the age of 5, in 1980. While we did learn about James Cook in school, I really had no knowledge about his early life and how he worked his way up through hard work, kindness to his fellow man, and determination. My favorite part, however, is the point that was made at the end. Being the best person you can be, and helping others. I wonder how many of those dim witted vandals would follow that path, or even understand it for that matter. Thankyou.

You should imitate him and learn that 205 years before him we Spaniards had already arrived in Australia, which is named after the Spanish Royal House of Austria at that time and that Luis Báez de Torres, between others, discovery of the continent and other islands long predates the English expeditions. and Dutch, who stole the military plans in the Taking of Manila. Now the natives would not be tearing down statues of Spaniards, since Spain recognized the status as humans beens and granted citizenship and property titles and even nobility to all its subjects, we did not have colonies or slave trade.

First Lieutenant James Cook has been much admired by me ever since I discovered his recognition of the value of the first ship’s chronometer to improve the safety of ships engaged on long ocean voyages. He helped in proving the reliability of John Harrison’s Chronometer H1 on board his ship. He had the capacity and intellectual skills to identify talented and gifted people with whom he came into contact. Your presentation of facts in this vlog is peerless. His mast broke while exploring the north so he returned to Hawaii for repairs where he was not welcomed anymore, got mad that they stole one of his ships so he attempted to kidnap their king in order to force them to give it back, killed one of his guardsmen and then fired first upon the locals who surrounded their king that were just trying to protect him. In an age when maps were wildly inaccurate Cook was a man apart. He did a five year survey of the coast of Newfoundland creating an unbelievable map that was used into the 20th century, You could lay a modern satellite map over top of Cook's map and they looked almost identical. Pure genius. Cook advanced to an exalted status in the Royal Navy in an era when people still got ahead based upon high birth. This was not unique to the Royal Navy. The genius of the Royal Navy is that they still made allowances for people of special abilities. Cook was one of those people.

It's funny actually because for a long time Hawaii was known as the "Sandwich Islands", and the British Empire respected Hawaiian sovereignty. Then the United States came and just took it by force. To this day, Hawaii has a Union Jack on their state flag, as a sign of deep respect and admiration of the British, because of Captain Cook. But I like to think that it's on there just as a big "F*** You" to the United States.

This was incredible. Reminded me why history and science were many favorite subjects in school. How remarkable, that remarkable people be forgotten in anger and lost in ignorance. The unfairness of past governments and their atrocities committed affects all of us in some way, Cook included. We can’t change the future by forgetting our past.

This was a wonderful and enlightening documentary. I live near Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island where a debate regarding Captain Cook's statue as a symbol of colonial repression has been ongoing. I don't think a single human being would not be moved by his virtue and achievements if they were aware of them. Thank you.

@@davem8836 Yes they did, it got thrown into the Inner Harbour on Canada Day during protests over the residential school grave discoveries. I guess the discussion is pretty much over. Pretty sad commentary considering. Cheers from Sooke. :)

Thanks for watching. You may find my video on Robert Fitzroy interesting too- he was a governor of New Zealand very concerned about Maori rights.

The voice of reason triumphs! When I first visited Austalia and New Zealand as a navigating apprentice in 1970 on a British cargo ship, I was entranced by the Aussie and Kiwi frankness and open friendship which, although I was only 16, was refreshingly different to the middle class privileged English upbringing I had enjoyed. The despoiling of Captain Cook's statues is a sad reflection of how attitudes have been warped over the recent decades, and how the alarming march of academic ignorance has struck a chord with those who will never aspire to achieve anything remarkable in their lives. I thank the author of this balanced and well constructed documentary and commend him for his summary comments. The differences between all tribes and nations of this wonderful planet ought to be the cause of celebration and marvel, not conflict and arrogance. No living person should feel responsible for the good works, or evil deeds, of those long dead. Instead, history should help us to stay on track and further the cause of good citizenship on a global scale.
