I wanted to delve into the gay question. This movie has a female hero who does not have a love interest but her closest friendship is with another woman. That's not a gay thing at all but it is really really unusual for an American movie.

Thats what I like. It's what I've argued with stuckey fans. A strong female/male bond for both characters is nice to see. I'm not mad just disappointed there is no queer relationship. My head canon is that Carol is asexual or lesbian though just that maria wasn't.

Something about the "acting" complaints is that for most of the movie, the character didn't know who she was. The Kree were trying to shape her personality in a more stoic direction, but the more she remembered, the more her personality shone through.
@bloodymares
@bloodymares Год назад
But that's the thing, her fake stoic personality feels more natural on screen in a bizarre way than her "real" humourous and snarky self. It should've been the opposite.

@@bloodymares I think it's the direction. Like the character I think the directors kept telling Larson to to be stoic but also be Tony stark snarky and didn't give her enough direction to balance. Her character is Tony stark snarky being gas lit into being Steve Rogers stoic and it's a hard balance to perform. Wt certain times it works

@@TheDCbiz And she ends up shining when doing neither and instead simply having human interactions with her best friend and the Skrulls (after waking up from brainwashing). She sells the compassionate and caring, almost motherly, character so well that the other two parts of her seem like fake layers that she puts up to deal with different situations: Stoic badass to fit in with Jude Law and snarky smartass to be confident around strangers (Fury, the bad guys, etc). Pick a side??? The character's sexuality was never alluded to in this movie, nor did it need to be. Just because a female lead lacks a romantic counterpart, does not make her gay. I don't think the character is (from the comics), but whether she is or isn't didn't matter for this story. As far as Larson's acting, I thought it was consistent with the character, a "warrior" with a foggy memory. Looking forward to your Endgame reaction.

In the comics, Carol is straight, at least in the ones I read. Her dating life is a source of frustration for her. But there have been multiple Captain Marvels, and at least one of them was bi (iirc). The movies may be combining aspects from other people who have worn that title into MCU Carol Danvers. Frankly, that's fine by me. I see it as homage to all who've had that title, and I want people to feel represented. Jen Walters is aggressively hetero, but more importantly her show "acknowledged" that the MCU has been a bit light in the romance department, particularly for non-hetero couples. I've spent a few years defending Brie's portrayal of Carol from people complaining about her "acting." Brie is a fine actor; Carol is difficult to play because of the attitude of the character. She's rather stoic, and when she DOES express emotion, it is often anger. Brie played Carol almost exactly how Carol is in the comics. There's a line from one of her writers that sums her up pretty well (paraphrased): "Steve Rogers gets knocked down, and he gets up because it's the right thing to do. Carol gets knocked down and gets back up because 'fuck you!,' that's why."

@@Aeronixable exactly..."for no reason" given to you by anything in this movie. What was it that made it romantic? - Was it the way they DIDN'T embrace each other longingly with soft caresses and tender touches? -or Was it the way the daughter called Carol "auntie" instead of "mom" like a significant other would be called? @Steele-Wool

In terms of Carol and Maria, they were not a romantic couple, they were best friends and I don't think it was supposed to be "bait" situation. They were roommates in the air force, but Carol didn't live with Maria and Monica at their house. She was a family friend or considered a part of the family for sure. Traditionally, Carol is straight in the comics. The original Captain Marvel aka Walter Lawson was a male kree who Carol was in a relationship with and who originally gave her her powers. Obviously for this movie the OG Captain Marvel was turned into a woman named Wendy Lawson and she took on a mentor role for Carol instead. In recent comics I believe they've explored her possibly being bisexual. Although I hear recently she's been in a relationship with Rhodey. Regardless, it's very possible and I kind of have a feeling they'll probably pair Carol up with a woman in the future in the MCU. With Maria, I for one am happy to see more female friendships that don't develop into a romantic relationship because it gets incredibly annoying to see that happen over and over again. I love a good romance, but I also want to see friendships celebrated as well.

The character of Captain Marvel to me has such a fascinating origin. I may be missing some details but essentially it was a comic from the 30’s/40’s that rivaled Superman (the character was similar to Superman). Then through a lawsuit the company that published had to stop publishing and the original character was purchased by DC. In the 60’s Marvel got the rights to the name to create the character that eventually became the one from this movie. DC eventually changed the original Captain Marvel characters name to Shazam.

Women who have naturally curly or wavy hair don’t need curling irons because their hair naturally retains the curl due to the shape of each strand. Well, the whole point of Tony and Strange's movies was for them to stop being cocky and be more humble. It was presented as their flaw that nearly cost them their life. Carol on the other hand goes the other way around, from humble but misguided to aware but cocky. But IMO even that could've worked if the direction was better. You can be cocky and charismatic after all, It all depends on how the actor pulls it off and the lines they're delivering. And something about the movie made Carol look like she was pretending to be cocky and snarky to fit in with the boys instead of genuinely being that. You know, kinda like Justin Hammer wanted to copy Tony's style and mannerisms but being very awkward instead.
@Eidlones

@@bloodymares Also with Tony and Strange, they have the charisma to make you like them. Moreso Strange than Tony, which is why Strange doesn't work as well, imo. Tony's the cocky ass you enjoy watching. Carol was just a cocky ass. If Tony shot the jukebox to prove something, he would have made some flippant comment about it, or the fact he just destroyed someone elses property to make a point. Carol just stares at Fury like, "Yeah. I can do that." I think Carol suffers cause she's a personification of the theme, rather than a character in her own right. Women are stronger than the patriarchy wants you to believe. While yeah, that's a true statement, you don't need to be so ham fisted with it. It's also not incorporated the best, anyway. Like when she has the fight scene with No Doubt playing. On top of being way too on the nose, it doesn't even make sense, since one of the characters she's fighting is a girl. If they were all men it would have at least stayed on topic.

I just yesterday watched Justice League vs Fatal Five and the main character follows the same trope (character arc = theme) but I felt like it was done better, the character felt like a real relatable and likeable person (well, mostly). Carol on the other hand lacked scenes that showcased multiple sides to her personality other than "Smartass Terminator that always stands up and keeps fighting and cracks a smile once or twice". "Carol" may not be a typical superhero name, but in the comics, Carol was not originally the hero. The "Captain Marvel" of the 1968 series was a MALE Mar-Vell (alias Walter Lawson) who was on a Kree scouting mission and started questioning his orders to infiltrate the humans in case we go to war with them. Carol was the NASA security chief who asked too many questions (but was also a potential ally and a potential love interest). Yon-Rogg was Mar-Vell's commanding officer (and there was a love triangle aboard ship, with them both interested in the lady Medic, named "Una', coincidentally) and he was a one-dimensional bad guy. This Yon-Rogg is *such* an upgrade. Eventually, Carol was exposed to Kree radiation in an explosion that killed Yon-Rogg (who was trying to kill Mar-Vell) and years later manifested super powers. But they really had no idea what to do with Mar-Vell, so they just ran him out there once a year to keep the copyright active (wouldn't want DC to start publishing "Captain Marvel" comics…especially as DC had acquired the rights to the "Shazam" guy, who was also called "Captain Marvel" decades before. [It was his original publisher going out of business that gave Marvel the opportunity to grab the name]) and eventually they gave the series to the new kid who had just arrived from Detroit (Jim Starlin) and said, "see what you can do with this". And Jim was like, well, I do have an idea for this really cool villain named "Thanos"… And then Carol went through a bunch of superheroic identities, and even though Starlin retired Mar-Vell, the company still wanted to keep the name active. So they had various other "Captain Marvel" characters until somebody figured out they should put Carol in the suit, given she went back to the very begininng of the character. A lot of the hate for this one comes from a few factors: conservatives didn't like making a new character the big hero (it was assumed Carol would save the day, since Mar-Vell had been Thanos's greatest foe in the comics), particularly because it was a woman and particularly because Brie Larson is pretty outspoken politically. And, well…it's not just this film. There's a certain amount of suspicion that Brie prefers girls IRL. (The best story I ever heard was that when Brie won her Oscar, she showed up at the big after-party stoned on mushrooms and tried to get Taylor Swift [also heavily-suspected] to share her plate [and who knows what else…], but Taylor just wanted to hang with her model pals instead of the hippie chick.) So some of the guys out there just didn't like Brie, period. Other's weren't too thrilled with the "Nick Fury's big secret is a CAT??" deal or Nick naming the Avengers after Carol. But just looked at as a film, I think this is fine. And, of course, some fans were just sick of waiting for "Endgame". But you don't have that problem…

I guess the hair thing in this movie is distracting, but it's just as bad where guys are the protagonists. Especially in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', where Cap takes his helmet off to fight Batroc and his hair is perfect. She kind of lacks the flaws of the other characters and she's too powerful to make up for that with the underdog thing characters like Hawkeye have.

Yup. Her movie sends a good message (emotions make you human), which ironically is more powerful for men than women, but aside from that message we don't really get to have a grasp of what defines Carol as a person and why we should be excited to see more of her.

19:43 I'm not mad that the relationship isn't queer since up to this film, marvel movies have very little strong female friend relationships. But I think the actors or writers had the characters as queer and either editing or directing chose not to. The character isn't originally queer so it might've been developed between the actors or writers taking liberties with the characters 🤷🏾‍♂️ it is also a good message that not only lesbian women join the military which could enforce a stereotype that lesbians are "manly" but yah it is odd

I honestly don't think they were going for a gay relationship between Carol and Maria. I didn't get that at all. They always appeared to me to just be best friends. Carol helps with Monica and they call her auntie. It would be cool if they were an item, but I don't think that's what they were going for. I think you guys are probably mistaken.

About the queer stuff i've seen more tension between Bucky and Steve during Captain America trilogy, i guess here the directors are playing with queerbait like always, but i don't see more interest in show us more of the Carol and Maria dynamic.

Love your MCU reactions as always. My feeling was similar -- I appreciated a lot of what the movie was going for thematically, but something was "off" about the humor. I love the idea of Captain Marvel but I feel like the directors and writers don't really know who she is as a character and it unfortunately shows. Lashana Lynch was incredible as Monica and did so much work as the emotional core of the movie. Also, low-key, I think this is one of the best MCU scores. The composer is Pinar Toprak, and she did a wonderful job marrying super synthy sounds with epic orchestral instruments. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BmUlamPi0Ko.html

I always enjoyed this movie and while I didn't get the same forced/humor vibe you did, I can understand it. But maybe she'll grow into the role in a way that will feel more natural. I had seen her before this in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and loved her in it. As always, love your reactions and seeing you vibe together to the insanity in these Marvel movies. RIP Stan Lee!! ❤ Oh, I totally understand when you say "as queer people, we just want to see it." I initially thought that she was in a relationship with Maria and at the time appreciated that they DIDN'T feel the need to spell it out, but I totally get the desire for "some sort of confirmation." I totally agree with that. Pick a side Marvel, indeed 🙂

Hey, Meg and Caleb! There are two sacred cows in Marvel comics who have DIED and NEVER returned! One is Uncle Ben and the other is.....Mar-Vell! As a Caucasian-looking Kree, he was a second-class citizen among his own people where blue skin was considered superior. Sent to spy on humans, he took a shine to the people of Earth and betrayed his mission resulting in his exile here. He was the ORIGINAL Captain Marvel, went by the alias Walter Lawson and found a human ally in Carol Danvers whom Brie Larson plays. He was one of Marvel's great cosmic characters who was deeply respected by all the other heroes. Fighting a villain called Nitro, he's exposed to a chemical that causes him to develop a cancer so terrible that no science of Mr. Fantastic and no magic of Doctor Strange can cure. All the Marvel heroes stand vigil at his bedside helpless to prevent his passing. In a final show of respect to the character, the writer, Jim Starlin, had Mar-Vell's mortal enemy, Thanos, who happened to be dead himself at the time, greet the soul of his nemesis in spirit form and escort him into whatever lay beyond. It's a watershed moment in Marvel history and a landmark graphic novel called "The Death of Captain Marvel". Carol Danvers was originally an Air Force officer who discovered Mar-Vell's alien origin and allied with him. Accidental exposure to a Kree device called the Psyche-Magnitron hybridized her DNA giving her abilities and she became Ms. Marvel. She was devastated by Mar-Vell's loss and never felt worthy to assume his mantle as was expected. She joined the Avengers and, in a very controversial story, was abducted by an extradimensional being and made into a sex slave. No one came to her rescue because she was mind-controlled into behaving as if her abductor were someone she truly loved. When she was finally freed, she was so aggrieved that her teammates accepted her out-of-character behavior as normal that she quit the Avengers in disgust and moved to San Francisco to become a private detective. While there, Rogue, a mutant who can drain others' powers, attacked her but held on too long stripping Danvers of her Kree power and putting her into a coma while permanently absorbing her abilities. X-Men leader Charles Xavier took personal responsibility for Carol's care to make amends for a mutant's involvement. She slowly recovered but with a tragic consequence: her memories were restored without any of the attendant feelings. Her emotional ties to friends and family were severed. This is the sole trait retained by the character in the movie. During an X-Men adventure, her Kree DNA was amplified to the staggering levels seen in the film and she changed her name to Binary. When Rogue was inducted into the X-Men, she felt betrayed by her new family for choosing her assailant over her so she wandered space for years with the pirates known as the Starjammers. Upon returning to Earth, she drained her Binary powers aiding the cosmic hero Quasar to stabilize the Sun. She rejoined the Avengers under the name Warbird but found the transition difficult, struggled with alcoholism and was booted from the team. After years as a government liaison, she was inducted into a new iteration of the Avengers as Ms. Marvel again. Finally, after helping to topple Norman Osborn's Dark Reign, Captain America encouraged her to adopt her mentor's title: Captain Marvel. This movie's aim was to create a Marvel analog to Wonder Woman who is a magnificent heroine and a unique combination of Thor and Cap over at DC. Feige foolishly tried to shoehorn this character into that mold but it doesn't fit and robs the Carol Danvers character of her rich heritage. This movie was also made to advance a feminist agenda by gender-bending Marvel's sacred cow, Mar-Vell, and making Carol into an all-powerful Superman-type. All the Marvel heroes struggle with the burden, the responsibility, the ethics of power. Throughout the MCU, the characters are forced to find strength when reduced to their humblest state such as Spidey lifting himself out of the rubble after being scolded that he shouldn't be wearing the suit if he's nothing without it, Banner filled with dread and self-loathing of his raging alter-ego, Stephen Strange finding new purpose when robbed of his hands, Thor earning his hammer through humility and sacrifice, Cap being selected by Erskine for his spirit and heart despite his weak body, Natasha continually seeking redemption for her Red Room past, Scott continually striving to be his daughter's hero, Tony endlessly wracked by guilt and anxiety masked by snark, T'Challa chagrined by the folly of his personal vendetta and the short-sightedness of his forebears, Quill choosing mortality over omnipotence. Carol may not need to prove anything to Yon-Rogg but she NEVER PROVES TO US that she's a hero without resorting to her immense power. She feels its her birthright and she has been kept from achieving her potential by a succession of oppressive men. Moreover, she's contemptuous and suspicious of anyone who questions her superiority. These aren't the attributes of a HERO. These are the classic attributes of a VILLAIN. The last four sins committed by this awful movie: 1. It made the Skrulls into cuddly aliens when any comic reader knows they are a vile and warlike imperial race who loathe humanity. 2. It bungled a golden opportunity to show the true form of the Supreme Intelligence as a massive, tentacled protoplasmic blob similar to "Dune" navigators! 3. It gives us just a brief taste of the landmark KREE-SKRULL WAR squandering what could have been an EPIC SPACE OPERA! 4. It made spymaster extraordinaire, Col. Nick Fury, into a total buffoon. He's a career soldier and intelligence agent notorious for being the MOST PARANOID man on Earth discovering extraterrestrials exist! Yet, Jackson's all chummy, cooing at a kitty and singing doo-wop! The dark secret of his eye? A cat scratched it! It's a totally different character! Where's the scowling, foul-mouthed killer from the previous movies? Was it Jackson's choice or the directors' orders? Who knows? Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck co-directed a really great dramedy called "It's Kind of A Funny Story" but their roots are indie films and the pair seem out of step with the established MCU. Brie Larson is spectacularly miscast! Comic Carol is extraordinarily beautiful, statuesque and voluptuous. When you cast Superman, you expect Henry Cavill's granite jaw! Additionally, the nonsense she publicly spouted contributed to her negative reception. The supporting cast is as talented as ever but Annette Bening as Mar-Vell aka "Wendy" Lawson and Jude Law as Yon-Rogg are wasted. Lee Pace's Ronan the Accuser and Djimon Hounsou's Korath, who both have yet to become the radicalized zealots seen in "Guardians of the Galaxy", make their first chronological appearances in the saga. Gemma Chan does a nice villainous turn as Minn-Erva. The remainder of Carol's Starforce unit, Rune Temte of "The Last Kingdom" as Bron-Char and Algenis Perez Soto as Att-Lass, barely make more than a physical impression and her unconflicted willingness to thrash the stuffing out of them makes them even more inconsequential. Ben Mendelsohn is amusing both as Talos and Director Keller. Matthew Maher as 'science guy' Norex and Sharon Blynn as Talos' mate, Soren, round out the Skrulls. LASHANA LYNCH as Maria Rambeau is the one bright spot! There is DEFINITE UNSPOKEN ROMANTIC CHEMISTRY between Maria and Carol but I'm glad the filmmakers didn't go the lesbian route because Carol is straight in the comics and this movie butchered her origin enough as it is. Delightful Akira Akbar plays the precocious child version of Monica Rambeau. A digitally de-aged Clark Gregg makes his first chronological appearance as Agent Phil Coulson and the charming Mckenna Grace plays a young Carol. TRIVIA: 1. The bar called Pancho's where Fury and Danvers meet is a tribute to the Happy Bottom Riding Club, a ranch/hotel owned by female aviation pioneer Pancho Barnes and frequented by many Edwards Air Force Base test pilots since the 1940's such as Chuck Yeager and Buzz Aldrin. 2. The security guard Carol questions outside the Blockbuster is actual Marvel security chief Barry Curtis. 3. Brie Larson is allergic to cats so, whenever she had a scene with Goose, the cat was either a visual effect or a puppet. EASTER EGGS: 1. When Monica is cycling through color options for Carol's suit, the first selection is red and gold as a nod to Fawcett Comics' original Captain Marvel now known as DC's Shazam, the second selection is black and gold as a nod to Carol's Ms. Marvel costume and the fourth selection is green and gray as a nod to Mar-Vell's Kree uniform. 2. Maria Rambeau's call sign is 'Photon' which is a nod to Monica's moniker in the comics, when she acquires her powers, at first calling herself Captain Marvel but later going by Pulsar and Photon. Nowadays, she's called Spectrum. CAMEOS: 1. Stan Lee appears as a passenger on the train where the Skrull Carol is chasing has adopted the form of an elderly woman. He's reading the screenplay for Kevin Smith's "Mallrats" which is a movie in which he had a cameo as himself! All of Stan's cameos are shown as part of the opening Marvel logo as a tribute to the co-creator's passing. 2. Contemporary Captain Marvel scribe Kelly Sue DeConnick is the red-head passerby in the train station after Carol disembarks. END-CREDIT SCENES: 1. The one about the pager is meant to be seen after the prologue to "Avengers: Endgame" but before Tony's scenes in space. 2. The one relevant to this movie has Goose the flerken cough up the Tesseract like a hair ball onto Fury's desk! The next chronological stop in the MCU is Ang Lee's 2003 "Hulk" for the optional origin of the Hulk.

When talking about how characters, origins and storylines differ from the comics, you're forgetting one important fact. The MCU is a different reality to the 616 comic universe, just like the Ultimate comic universe is a different reality to the 616 comic universe. It exists as it's own thing, so it follows that stuff would happen differently. In fact, when comparing the movies and comics, it should be the Ultimate stuff that you compare to the movies since the MCU started as an adaptation of Millar and Hitch's Ultimates and is based way more on the Ultimate universe than it is the 616 universe.
@oxhine
@oxhine Год назад
@@carlgibson285 You are correct about the influence of the Ultimate universe and you are correct that all the movies are loose interpretations of the source material. What contributed greatly to the MCU's success was getting the essence of these characters right. Nooblers know nothing except what they are shown but the core fans can separate wheat from chaff. When the core fans are shown respect for their passion, they lend undying support. When they are disrespected by being sold a false bill of goods, they revolt. This character has a rich heritage and was done so grave a disservice as to be unrecognizable. This infuriated the people who know the difference. To rub salt into the wound, the warped and corrupted interpretation of the character was done simply to advance a political agenda beyond the scope of the narrative while leveling claims of misogyny against fans who took no issue with Natasha, Wasp, Wanda, Peggy or DC's Wonder Woman! The film doesn't work. The character doesn't work. This was the harbinger of the Phase 4 fiasco.

@@oxhine I get why some comic fans would hate how much they change things for the movies and how much they changed Carol in particular, and as a comic fan of over 40 years I do kinda agree with you, but I do think comic fans overestimate just how important their opinions are to the MCU. The average Danvers comic appearance over the years was read by what, maybe 30,000 people? Literally millions of people watch the movies, so us comic fans make up less than 1% of the audience. Our opinions, frankly, are irrelevant. Sometimes a character's history is so complicated and convoluted that they have no choice but to basically create the character for the screen from scratch. Again, I'm not disagreeing with your points, I'm just pointing out why Disney don't care what comic readers think about their adaptations (although I must admit I've actually enjoyed Phase 4 for the most part, and some of the stuff I've enjoyed the most strayed even further from the comics than Captain Marvel did).

I’ve only seen this once when it came out and never again, it’s not one of my favorite MCU movies by any means it definitely has its flaws but I found this to be more entertaining then Thor The Dark World for example but that’s mostly cause I loved the twist on the Skrulls and young Nick Fury, I found captain marvel to be the least interesting part of the movie which probably isn’t a good thing when you’re the lead. I know a lot of people around the time when this was announced and coming out felt Brie Larson was miscast for the role and she didn’t exactly help her case labeling all criticism constructive or not as sexist and misogynistic, it made a lot of marvel fans turn against her forsure but I’m curious to see what you’ll think of Carol in Endgame and future projects, if you check out any of her comics I’d recommend some around her time as Ms. Marvel and right around when she first is renamed captain marvel the original 1977 run of Ms Marvel is nostalgic and the 2006 run best of the best is a pretty good one in my opinion

The character isn't queer in the comics so I feel some creative liberties got pressed out. With Steve and Bucky it feels more fan fiction type but just doesn't go to full route. Either way I'm fine with marvel encouraging strong female and male relationships with non queer characters and hope queer characters brought to film are more explicit and well done
