A question: which videos of your gameplay do you personally like the most with the exception of satisfactory, factorio, captain of industry and DSP? I want to watch some more series of yours and dont know yet which route to go down. What is your recommendation?
@asureaskie

Personally, I see Unity as the willingness of your population to pull massive amounts of OT or other inconvenience to get your orders done. Being away from home on an oil rig, pulling overlapping 12 hour triple shifts in a factory, or a colony-wide barn raising to get that new factory built ASAP. It may be slightly magical in its degree of effectiveness, but it's not a blatantly-magical resource.

I watch quite a few review type videos when looking at a potential game purchase. So many times they aren't done well, aren't detailed about what makes the game good or bad, are an attempt to get you to watch their let's play, or are shallow with an obvious attempt to give nothing of real value to the viewer while amassing as many clicks as possible. This video was spot on, very well done, well presented, and exactly what a game review should be. Nicely done.

This is my first factory game, and I love the challenge of balancing the production of resources and waste products. There are a few things that your factory won't care if they back up (oooh no, I'm producing too much steel), and other things that will absolutely screw you if they back up (naptha backed up so now your distillers aren't producing diesel and your trucks run out and you deathspiral). I've spent hundreds of hours messing with refinery layouts at this point, setting up different loops to ensure that everything gets rendered out in the way I want and any overflow is taken care of so that the system doesn't jam no matter how much crap I shove into it. Absolutely stellar game. Not for everyone, but definitely work giving a shot if you like factory games or the management game genre in general.

COI is so overwhelming for a new player. So many choices. Yet those choices are a great part of the game. i can choose to min max the production needed. i can choose to try a green energy route. i can choose to trade with other colonies. I can gather from the resources on the map, costing me people and unity. on many production chains, i have choices, which way to produce, or purchase what I need.... That is why I spend hours playing the game. Some sessions are just about solving one production problem. or preparing for the next step, and needing to get new production chains up and running, and it is not just increase the base items. The entire chain is interconnected. Not enough people, trouble, not enough unity to keep the off shore industries working trouble, not enough coal, trouble....This is a good game to get lost in.

I 100% agree! To be honest, after I played this game most other Factory games became just boring to me! See this as a fair warning ⚠⚠⚠ Why? - Its far more realistic - Waste, side products & environment damage, like in the real word, brings a lot of challanges and interesting Gamplay. - Settlement&supply mechanic. - How tech tree and progress work. You never just build a "part Factory", finished with ita and just copy & paste it later, like in other games. Every new tech makes a thing just a little bit better, optimizes it, makes it a bit more eco friendly. This always forces you to rethink, rebuild, find new ways to improve your existing. But you really want these new tech asap and you feeling like a child in the candy store who cant decide, which candy it should you choose next. Because nearly everthing (aside from the late game) is important and you want it now. But be carful and smart here or you can fail. - Terraforming plays a huge part in this game and "planning ahead" with it. - You always NEED to planning ahead in this game, but you need to to do thing in the right order. (which changes from island to island/ World Map) - But on the other hand the gameplay is more relaxing like in Factorio/Satisfactory for me. - In Satisfactory . they tell you stay effective and do not waste. In CoI, this is not just a slogan, its an f..cing Imperativ or you will fail. (especially on higher difficulty) - Logistics are on a complete other level in this game because of Ai trucks and that belts & warehouse use energy. - Backup systems. Yes you should build&use backup systems or you can die quick, if you make a mistake. Simple as a backup diesel generator, if your Steampowerplant stops. Which often can only startup again with energy (like in the real world) or a flare in your petrochemical plant. (Which should be only working if something is wrong in your plant and lets prevent a factory hold) - Synergy / combing Factories can bring great benefits. Its not like in other games where you just say, i produce this here and this over there. No, you can&must combine some factories. e.g. a steam powerplant and a petroplant are great together. For startup the petroplant with powertplant (and backup for restaart) and for using unused products of the petroplant to generate steam for powerplant. For me, CoI easily became the king of all factory games. Especially on higher difficulties. The only thing this game dire needs is a coop multiplayer. Where you play with a friend toghter like in anno as the same fraction on the island. (Edited to remove spelling errors)

It's funny that Factorio is still often used to compare these. Like "Doom Clone" in the early days of first person shooters. It's 3D Factorio. It's Factorio with boats. You covered all the things that need covering. So I'll just say, it's amazing to see a game like this come out in such a vast, complete, and well thought out state. And then within the first year, get some serious and meaningful updates. It's not an easy game, and I have yet to really even get into mid game. But I'm motivated to do it simply because I know I'll feel rewarded for conquering it, just like any Souls like game.

Thank you for your video series. I have watched every episode in the COI series. I agree with most of what you say in this video. Update 1 Edition is certainly a vast improvement (hundreds of bug fixes plus Quality of Life improvements) but I cannot get past the treatment of the End Game which detracts from the games enjoyment for me. I played it using the same settings you applied and with the same game seed... I got passed running out of oil, running out of underground water, inadequate quantity of Unity but ultimately the constant demands for more housing (and the resultant knock on effects) killed me. I am thinking should try it again at the lowest game difficulty settings or maybe wait until the Early Access game evolves some more. (I have over 1100 hours in Satisfactory and 5800 hours Factorio, which might actually not be an advantage when it comes to playing Captain of Industry, given those games shape ones thinking a bit) Nilaus, thanks again for your great work.

Thanks for the video the game is great I bought it last December and spend more than 500 hours on it I enjoyed it so much but I'm not a pro or even a mid-tier player it may seams wired but the biggest obstacle in the game for me was terraforming and how to make the island flat to build or expand more than half of my playing time was spent on how can I achieve that simple goal and unfortunately, I didn't accomplish it yet so I stopped playing for more than 4 months now after update 1 I want to try the game again but I'm afraid that terraforming will be my problem again so can you please make a video on terraforming and how can you flat your island to access resources and how you can climb up the mountain or flatten a hell to extend your buildable area Thanks

I agree Nilaus completely based on few playthroughs. If you like hard factory game in which you can fail you should certainly try Captain of Industry. COI has also replay value for several playthroughs because you can choose different islands and it is still under development. Harder islands needs little different strategy (I like the one you have to dig huge ramp to large upper plane with very limited area, but do not recommend it for first try). However, COI may not be your choise in casual playing. It punishes ruthlessly at least in captain difficulty (default) if you do not concentrate in details. There are easy mode too but I have not tested it on do not know how much it forgives.

Been playing Captain of Industry for a few days now. In my opinion, this feels like a marriage of a factorio with an anno. Upgrading your housing. And providing more foods and services kinda feels like the anno series, where you upgrade your people, and they demand more goods and services with each level, but tasso pay you more taxes. 4:29 4:31 4:32

I concur. I'm a veteran Factorio player, journeyman DSP player, and I found CoI rewarding, and challenging. It's 'Early Access' but is a very full, complex, and well thought out game. Full disclosure, I still have not launched a rocket in CoI. It's a long game and will require you to learn new ways of automating a factory sim. (EDIT 6 months later: I have to temper my previous enthusiastic response for the game. It was written before the Death Spiral ruined the game for me. Some people apparently like the Death Spiral, but I am not one. If you like that kind of pressure, play on. If you like a relaxing factory game this is not it.)

Why don't the shipwrecked just invent radio and call for help? How is electricity being transmitted? Are the people all ghosts? Why do they eat just potatoes for a few years without ever bothering hunting or trapping in the woods? All very mysterious.

Graphite looks like magic to me, compared to the real thing. Very much in the vein of Ian Crossland from the Tim Pool podcast. That guy is a goofball. He thinks we need to use exhaust for graphite material, because we need graphite and that's his idea of cost effectivnes. I'm pretty sure the carbon capture into graphite feature is inspired by him, that the devs implemented as a joke.

Only problem with COI for me is that it gets too complicated too quickly. I'm trying my best to play and learn, I pirated it because I have no source of income to buy anything I want (No one is hiring in my city. It's out of my hands) But I want to be able to used belt and conveyors more often than trucks, and the only way to get those is to get to Construction 2. But the game is built on using the trucks so much, that you have to rely on them so much, even after you get belts. It's more math than I'm used to, but my brain just isn't made for these kinds of games, despite my enjoyment of them. I've never gotten past 4 colors of science packs in Factorio. I gave up entirely on Satisfactory because I don't like not being able to see anything.
