FILM DESCRIPTION:
Two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks teams with Oscar-nominated director Paul Greengrass and screenwriter Billy Ray to tell the true story of Richard Phillips, a U.S. cargo-ship captain who surrendered himself to Somali pirates so that his crew would be freed. Captain Richard Phillips (Hanks) and his crew are carrying freight around the Horn of Africa when four Somali pirates forcefully take over their ship, the MV Maersk Alabama. While Phillips' team follow his orders to hide until they hear him give the safe word, the captain and a few essential crew members remain on the bridge as the heavily armed pirates make their way up to seize control of the ship. But the interlopers soon discover something that sends them into a furious rage: After effectively shutting down the ship, Phillips explains that the Maersk had malfunctioned when the crew pushed it too hard in an attempt to evade the attackers. In order to appease their leader, the ruthless Muse (Barkhad Abdi), Phillips offers them the $30,000 that's been locked in the ship safe. But that isn't enough, and Muse demands that Phillips help him search every corner of the ship to root out the terrified crew. When that plan fails, the pirates agree to take the cash from the safe and flee in the Maersk's lifeboat. At the last minute, however, they kidnap Phillips in the hope of supplementing their take with a sizable ransom -- a decision that leads to a tense standoff with the U.S. Navy, who would sooner see the lifeboat sunk with Phillips inside than allow it to reach Somalia.

Emperor Nero I doubt it. The pirates would go back to their mothership and get another one and try to capture the ship again unless Phillips steers clear of the Somali coast.

Jeremiah Saquing I've seen so many people say the same thing the ships big by the time someone got down to were the Pirates are climbing up they already be on board and that crew member would probably be shot and killed. The captain was thinking of his crew first then trying to risk someones life. Let's remember these guys are not military there just your average crew members on a cargo ship. You put yourself in that situation with second to think of a plan and see what you come up with I'm sure you panic as well and by time you think of grabbing that ladder they already be on board your ship.

Thats what happened 7 years ago. I forgot the ships name but the AB went down starboard side and threw their ladder and they had no where else to get to the ship.

i disagree. Look at the angle between the boat and the main deck. It is quite the height. If the crew member stayed low, or was lying on his stomach, they wouldn't have been able to get a good angle or shot on him.

Merchant vessels are very rarely allowed guns because under international law they’re no longer classified as merchant ships if they’re armed, which causes issues with docking at foreign ports because each country has different rules about how they deal with trading with non merchant vessels. Also, merchant vessels are protected under international law from harm from other countries or from piracy. As soon as you put guns on board you lose many of those protections. The fact is today piracy has been so heavily suppressed that it’s rarely an issue

Merchant ships now go armed with security teams they pick up when they enter a high piracy area and drop off when they leave. These guys are ex soldiers and are no joke, they whack pirates for fun

Most do, after serving in the Australian 2nd Commando Reg. I worked aboard multiple cargo ships as a private security contractor. Never had an encounter with any pirates though, great money but extremely boring.

Why they didn't unhook the ladder: True someone could have been waiting there to throw it off - BUT - once the Pirates see it thrown off, they would know someone was there and open fire in that area - risking the crew member's life. Furthermore, in the heat of the moment, I doubt many people would think ahead enough to keep a crew member in the vicinity for that purpose.

the ships crew were trained the basics of any military exercises, ofc pirates will use ladders but it is still possible to keep track on the pirates spot and when their ladder reaches the "deck", two person will remove the ladder while lying down the floor. i bet the angle of attack from the pirates is impossible to shoot those crews

There are armed guards guarding the ships. But it is the decision of owner of ships. For example many ships have vessel protection detachment personnel who protect ships in case of piracy. They are militarized personnel appointed by Flag state and their explicit approval. You need to make an application for Flag State to extend such protection. There are other methods as well.

They do now. This incident was the straw that broke the camel's back essentially - there had been other pirate hijackings previously but none as high profile as this. Now all ships that pass through this area have weapons on board.

Yeah the armed security is more cost effective. Besides, US Patrol Craft would be more cost effective than a destroyer, but I doubt the U.S has enough ships in the fleet to escort all merchant vessels anyway. Long story short, can't escort them, but private security works just as well.

Fyi it's not possible to remove the ladder. The ship is hundreds of meters long and by the time the pirates hooked the ladder on they jumped on it almost immediately. Unless someone from the crew has the superhuman abilities to run to the other end of the ship in a fraction of a second and unhook a ladder carrying the weight of two adult men then it's not possible.

Possible solutions to the problem 1. Try to Knock the pirates off the ladder or hit them in the head one by one with a suitable object before they reach the top. 2. Detach or Push the ladder off of the ship. 3. Pee off the side of the ship, and aim it at their faces as they climb the ladder. 4. Tell them that you & your crew are also pirates, and have just taken over the ship.

Pirates have Captain Phillips. the crew escapes to the safe room under the ship. during the standoff the crew manages to sink the Pirate's boat so they have no choice but to kidnap Phillips and escape in his private lifeboat.

I always wondered while watching the movie, why didn't they have a couple of guys on the deck who could push the ladder off. I get that it's protocol and all that, but those tactics worked throughout the entirety of medieval era with ladders against castle walls. Why would they not use the same tactics here? Sure if they were on it, it may be too heavy - but there was plenty of opportunity in this scene alone before that happened. You would also still be able to lift it with a crowbar or a similar tool - which they obviously would have had on board.

How many Pirates are there really left in your country? All i ever see about Somalia in the media is the rare occasional video of a U.S. Destroyer blowing some pirates out of the water. How many are really left?

If every crew member on the container ship had a machine gun and knew how to use it, they could make short work of the pirates. The good guys would suffer some casualties, but they are also likely to suffer some casualties if they do nothing.

Don't even need that. A pistol is actually ideal in the close confines of a ship when boarded. Submachine Guns are a bit tricky but also ok. Rifles and carbines are a bit much for these pirates but ideal for more professional forces. Up to me, all my merchant fleets would have a warship escort be it a corvette, frigate, fighters from a carrier,(they fly at least 3-4 air patrol sorties a day.), or a submarine (a perfect reason to bring back the diesel-electrics with deck guns. Continue to let the nuclear navy to do the big jobs and the smaller diesel/gas turbine fleet and small carriers protect the merchant ships, handle distress and rescue missions.)
