A long time ago I worked for the company that mixed the original Pugwash sound tracks. In a cupboard in the dubbing theatre we had a few pieces of wood loosely tied and screwed together which could be manipulated to produce the creaking sounds of rigging and masts flexing, especially in high seas, and added to the background sound effects track.

I remember when this first hit our screens, I was young and missed ever innuendo. My dad on the other hand, who never watched children's TV would make an exception and loved every episode.

I play "Naval Action", an online multiplayer roleplaying naval game, and my name there is "Seaman Staines", and everyone comments that it's very clever, and I tell them it is truly a character in an old kid's cartoon show, and they don't believe me. Oh, and "Roger the cabin boy" is not his name, it is the crew's favorite shipboard activity.

Absolutely wonderful! I loved this show as a wee laddie, heard all the Seaman Stains rumours in High School, was disappointed to then learn there was no truth to those rumours. Now I'm immensely grateful to you for bringing them to life in such a satisfying and funny way. Thank you!

The name seaman stains is dodgy enough to get onto a kids program but if the other two master bates and roger the cabin boy are there original names then there is no way it is not intentional, they lied saying there is no truth in those rumours. The BBC are not squeaky clean they did knew jimmy savile was a pervert right at the top of the command chain. Loved captain pugwash anyways.

There never *were* any innuendos. No Seaman Stains, Big Willy, Master Bates or Roger. That stuff was invented by two comedians, and printed in two British newspapers. John Ryan, Pugwash's creator, successfully sued the papers.

The BBC used to be how should I put it? Innocent and naive. The Goon Show in the fifties had characters like Hugh Jampton and Singiz Things. Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan both spoke urdu and put rude words in urdu into the show knowing that the BBC wouldn't understand the meanings. They weren't so gullible in the seventies.

Great cartoon The theme music is my mobile ring tone. The over dub with the dirty names is very well done, you know they didn’t exist in the original.
