Captain's License Renewal | Timing and Cost 

Great job! Quick clarification on continuity. The one year grace period allows a mariner to renew their MMC without meeting the original testing requirements (which would be a pain!) If you do not intend on using your credential but do not want to meet the original testing requirements in the future, you can place the MMC into "CONTINUITY" status. This basically preserves your license in a dormant state until you need it again. Deeper explanation: If you do not have the 360 days of sea service to renew your credential AND you do not want to take a renewal course or renewal exams, you can place your credential into continuity. This essentially freezes your license and you do not have to return every 5 years to apply again. You simply put in an application that says "PLACE MMC INTO CONTINUITY" and the NMC will send you a document of continuity with NO EXPIRATION DATE. To break your license out of continuity, you simply have to meet the renewal requirements when you are ready (drug test, renewal course or exams, physical, pay.gov etc) and you are good to go! How about if you are doing a masters upgrade to an unexpired OUPV. Would you get a new expiration date? Can you renew and upgrade at the same time?
