It makes sense that Data would have the longest run as Captain of anyone. Unlike any Captain before him, Data cannot and will not age either physically or cognitively, his mind won't grow slower nor will his bones grow frail... He's a machine, and theoretically with a rotating crew he could be a starship captain indefinitely if he and starfleet desired to do so.
@@EisenbeisserDE yeah but since he's an android and they had B-4 on board, they could transfer his positronic pathways and memories into B-4 which would be equal to an resurrection (with a memory loss of around a day (or two) before his death)
Eisenbeisser DE It wasn’t intentional. B-4 was broken. They transferred Data’s pathways to B-4 in order to try to repair him. The ending implies that Data’s personality is starting to emerge in B-4 after the original Data’s death. Given that artificial beings routinely copy themselves (how many times has the Doctor copied or moved himself) and consider it their “true” self, there’s no reason to treat the resurrected Data any differently.
Yes, I feel sorry for poor Harriman as well. Imagine being stuck with "Tuesday" for the rest of your career. It would be interesting to know more about him. I'm thoroughly intruiged by Scott, as she was the first woman we saw as the commander of the Enterprise, and seemed a very impressive person. It would make for a rather sad series though, as we know the tragic end to her story. ("Yesterday's Enterprise" is one of my favourite TNG episodes.) I would love a new series set in the 25th century, as I feel the 23rd and 24th are already so crowded, it would be great to have a fresh slate.
There’s a Lost Era novel where he takes part in a Starfleet Intelligence operation that results in the Tomed Incident. He and a few other operatives hijack the Romulan flagship Tomed and send it on a suicide run at the Federation side of the Neutral Zone, overloading its singularity drive while at warp. The explosion destroys several Starfleet outposts, supposedly killing over 10,000 people. In reality, all the names on that list were already dead, and life sign generators were used to fake them. The only people to die were the Romulan Admiral Aventeer Vokar and his crew. Well, Harriman’s father died too, but that was an accident earlier in the book (they faked a new drive system by using transwarp with that stolen Romulan cloak). The final goal was to force the Klingons off their fence and stand on the side of the Federation in negotiations at Algeron (Azetbur was dragging her heels). Romulans chose to retreat to their territory but demanded that Federation not use cloak. They were fine with it. Honestly, given the underhanded nature of the operation, I’m surprised it was SI and not Section 31 doing it. SI is supposed to be the nicer one of the two. Bottom line: if you take this into consideration, then Harriman was a badass.
During the time wars Captain Archer was shown the Enterprise 1701 J. According to Captain Picard the "NX-01 is a Museum" its final Captain was T'Pol According to( a relative) Sarek
I would like to see what Spock would be like as a captain. Seeing space exploration and conflict from a Vulcan point of view is always interesting, and the few times we saw it with Spock, Tuvok, T'pol and others was great.
Although not canon, you can get a bit of that feel from the 1980s DC comics where Spock is given command of a small science vessel. It's kind of cool and would have made a fun spin-off series (animated perhaps?). Some weird but lovable characters among the crew.
How is Picard only 12 years? The D was 7.5 years. Then the E - Geordi says in First Contact that they’d been in space nearly a year so lets say 10 months. Then in Nemesis it’s been 15 years that the crew was together so... considering the 14 months between D & E, Picard commanded for approx 14 years plus anything post Nemesis.
Generations takes place around stardate 48632.4 (August 19th 2371), and First Contact around stardate 50893.5 (November 23, 2373), so it's about 27 months between the two. Geordi says in FC they've had about a year of shakedown time, which leaves about 14-15 months between the destruction of 1701-D and the launch of 1701-E.
petulant maybe not. We don’t know if Tasha was the last time he used his multiple techniques. Jenna from season 4 could have also been the last time, or maybe he had some experience not documented in TNG.
I'd love to see you do an episode or series on the various alternate versions of the _Enterprise_ Hell, you should expand it and cover the alternates versions of hero ships in general. Also, I'd love for a series set in what's currently called The Lost Era. So much potential there for story telling.
IINM, Unfortunately, Paramount owns part of the IP and CBS owns another part. No one can produce anything in the prime universe without copyright infringement!
I like your treatment of the Enterprise-C recounting, from an in-universe perspective; a nice contrast to Lore Reloaded's 'chronological' following of events. Great video!
I just watched both parts and I must say that this was Superior analysis that was easy to understand and not long-winded. I always forget about the other captains who had appeared on occasion in the show or were in other types of Star Trek lore so I'm glad I saw this.
Great overview and very entertaining! However, you forgot to mention the Enterprise J, which is part of canon as it was visited by Captain Archer in "Enterprise."
Unfortunately, aside from, possibly, a single mission in star trek online there is no mention of who commands the enterprise J, or for how long they were in command. There was speculation that it was a Captain Dax [not Ezri of course] but who ever the symbiont was joined to at the time.
Excellent! Thanks for this. Always wondered about the "unknown" eras of off-screen Trek. Had no idea Harriman was that deep of a character. An ENT-B series would be awesome.
It’s beta content I know, but the novel Ship is the Line has Morgan Bateson (AKA Frasier) becoming the first captain of E-E, before handing command over to Picard. The ship was also built in the Typhon Expanse. Scotty was its designer and first chief engineer.
I always wanted to see a show with the Enterprise-B. Because, like you, the Excelsior is one of my favourite ships and the uniforms of that period are pure class. There's even room for a slight redesign of the uniform, maybe with a less turtleneck-y collar, before they transition to the collarless and beltless uniform seen in episodes of TNG.
I agree with you sir on having a series focus on the Enterprise-B, after its near disastrous maiden voyage... 1) Love the Excelsior ship and the refit of it for the NCC-1701-B 2) Loved the movie uniforms as well 3) Loved the flawed (inexperienced) CO of the "flagship", because that gives great potential to have a show with a main character who has potential for a great deal of growth--as Kirk put it, but re-stated "risk is part of the responsibility if he wants to sit in that chair" Harriman relied on his name to get him to the top but then sort of choked when time called for him to be CO. The series could show his growth into a mature, memorable captain in the legacy of commanding Enterprise ships. 4) I think that time period provides a good transition time in Federation history between the Cold War era during the movies with the Klingons, to what caused the Romulans to go into isolation at the beginning of the 24th century. I feel like the E-B played a good role in reminding the Federation that they were out their for exploration and new discovers not to fly the flag and show the muscle that the refit Enterprise and Enterprise-A had to do because of the uneasiness with the Klingons. Plus there could be a proper introduction for the Cardassians, Breen, Nausicans, etc. (species we all saw show-up in TNG but not get a introduction) Finally, I could see a tip of the hat to the past when in the finale or finale season, a seasoned John Harriman could have an encounter with a young Jean-Luc Picard, maybe a chance encounter that would influence the future Enterprise captain's decision to join Starfleet.
The Excelsior wasnt refitted and became the Enterprise B. It was a brand new ship. Funny how most of the maiden voyages of the Enterprise never went smoothly. Always something went completely wrong!
WOW Best one yet, absolutely amazing and great to watch, even got the loss of the B in that's hard to find anything about. Deffo becoming a subscriber to you. Cheers dude :) live long and prosper :)
@@kevinmoore2929 I don't think anyone could portray Data as the versatile Brent Spiner. Inevitably it would be the Kobiashi Maru of acting roles. I was a kid when Star Trek premiered on TV. I just can't get into the reboot. Almost thankfully it has died due to $ and egos.
Unfortunately CBS has decided that Data is dead, and B4 was never able to hold his engrams or anything like that. B4 was shut down, disassembled, and literally put inside some drawer. If the body had been placed into another piece of furniture, you could say he was shelved both literally and figuratively. But since Soong was the only one who could create such magnificent androids as Lore and Data, we are terribly unlikely to see their like again. No matter how hard Maddox tries.
I really really really enjoy your stuff. I would love to see more with the Enterprise J. The ship was so huge! I would love to see some love given to that massive lad in the future.
@@faiththurmond1624I see it as being more experimental. Too much experimentation, probably, but I'd not call them completely "un-trek like." And wasn't the same argument of butchering Gene's vision leveled at DS9, which is now considered some of the best the series has to offer now? Something tells me hindsight will soften the edges of these shows over time. Especially if DIS season 2 is anything to go by.
Eh, infinite universe theory is canon from that episode that had worf jumping timelines. Picard the show is one timeline, captain data a different one.
Kirk was also briefly captain of the Enterprise B (about 10 seconds in the chair). However, as a uniformed officer Kirk still ranked in seniority over Harriman and could plausibly take over if necessary at any time, which he essentially did as an assistant to Harriman.
As far as I can see Decker never really captained the enterprise, as all he did was oversee the refit and before decker could assume active command kirk took the captain's chair to commence the ships active roll upon leaving dry dock.
I would like to see a series set around data in command. It might be a mini series... Or longer... But Data has been one of my favorite characters and I'd be genuinely curious to see him faced with more leadership dilemmas.
What’s powerful of the Enterprise E and it’s crew is that it was one of the first Star Fleet vessels designed for war. This represented a significant shift in thinking for its design, the crew, it’s mission, the Captain’s leadership style and policies & procedures. This is more significant than is eluded to.
I thought most Starfleet vessels were designed for war, with the Galaxy-class being the main outlier. I know _STO_ isn't cannon, but it describes Connies as cruisers and Mirandas as frigates. And I'm pretty sure Kirk didn't have families on his ship. _USS Defiant_ and _USS Voyager_ , which were launched before _USS Sovereign_ , which was renamed _Enterprise-E_ , was ready, almost certainly did not have room for crew families, and they were certainly designed for war against the Borg.
While Data/Lore being Captain is definately in contention as established in Picard, we do know that Picard attempts to clean up and push towards what is otherwise in Star Trek Online. The IDW prequel comics for Picard (also called Countdown; though not related to 2009 countdown) do definately tie Picard to STO. Specifically, we see an Odyssey class ship in test flight.
A neat compilation of the history of the Enterprise and it's captains/crews. Over the years as I'd watched the movies and all the TV shows I always felt they should have created a character who started out in the 1st Star Trek movie then somehow made his way on to the Next generation and then to the reboot movies. Because, why not? Anything could happen.
Yeah, first Non Human to take command of the Enterprise, actually Data is the first Non Human to take command of the Enterprise. Captain Shon would be the first Organic Non Human instead.
If you are familiar with Star Trek Online, you might know, that after the Enterprise-E another ship of the Odyssey-Class, called Enterprise-E was commitioned in 2409. It is captained by the andorian Va'Kel Shon and appears throughout the events often to assist in various missions. And you forgot to mention Cpt. Morgan Bateson (formerly USS Bozeman) who oversaw the construction of the USS Enterprise-E and was supposed to take over that ship until the Enterprise-D was lost, and ultimately the command of the Enterprise-E was given to Jean-Luc Picard. Also, Cpt. Montgomery Scott worked on the construction of the Enterprise-E as well refitting severall components of the Enterprise-D.
I'm fascinated by Captain Harriman. I want them to do some radio shows with that character. I'll bet after such a tragic first command that he was changed forever and became an excellent captain.
Hmm, it's worth noting here that in the books, B4 does not assume the mantle of a one-for-one replacement Data and Picard continues to captain the Enterprise, while Riker does his admiral thing with the Titan. Worf becomes the Enterprise' first officer, while La Forge remains chief Engineer.
Indeed, the only time travel suspected to have occurred was based around the fact that Tasha Yar from an alternate timeline was among the survivors of the battle who was taken back to Romulus and eventually gave birth to a half-romulan daughter, Sela.
Since you're bringing up Memory Beta content there are several novels that show the Enterprise E taking an active part in the Dominion war. Besides, being the ship that she is i highly doubt that Starfleet would keep her away from the frontlines
Taking just novels into account which are considered canon until something on-screen contradicts them Picard was in command of D/E from 2375-2385 20 years in total, if you subtract time relieved from D and time between D & E it could be 19. However E was originally called Monarch and they rechristened it after the fact as an emergency replacement for the fleets flagship, something no Enterprise prior to D had ever officially been full-time. If you take the new Picard series he steps down from E sometime in or shortly after 2387 with the destruction of Romulus, bringing JLPs official time to 22 years.
NCC 1701-C with the original Rachel Garret. I think a series could have been built around her as portrayed by Tricia O'Neil. I also think this actress would have been my choice to command Voyager.
Considering Generations reused a few things from Star Trek VI, I wonder if part of the reason for the Enterprise-B being Excelsior class was so that they didn't have to design a new ship.
5:13 - would Troi count with Riker and Jellico as temporarily commanding the Enterprise? She was basically in command for the whole episode in "Disaster". Same with Dr. Crusher in "Descent, Pt. 2" and Data in "Gambit, Pt. 2"
I loved this, and yes, I would also love to see an "Alternate Enterprise" list. As far as a series based around a non-Kirk/non-Picard Enterprise, I'd like one for Capt. Demora Sulu; I'm very curious how her personality and command style resembled or differed from her father as well as other Enterprise captains.
How about Captain Morgan of the USS. Bozeman? Introduced in STNG episode “Cause & Effect”. For Enterprise-E. He was given command. Technically being being a captain with the most seniority. (Due to his time loop episode). It was in one of the books taking place before movie 1st contact.
Wasn't he in command for about one mission then was like, "nah, new ships are too weird. Peace out."? I didn't included him here as he only has one thing referring to him in command that I could find where as Data had two sources, giving it a bit more likelihood of becoming canon.
@@CertifiablyIngame Comm Officer: "Hailing frequencies open, Captain." Morgan, "Thank you, Roz. Hello, this is Captain Morgan ... and I'm listening." LOL
Rick, Could you do a show on all the captains that came out the respected crews of all of the 5 star trek shows. The adventures of Captain Sulu and others. Thank you.
If Star Trek Online canon is going to be included, I must point out that the game has the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-F, Odyssey class and launched in the same year as its Sovereign class predecessor was decommissioned. The 3800 story arc has the player attending an anti-Borg conference at Deep Space Nine when one last wave of Dominion war ships from the war that dominated the writing for the last two seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In the second to last mission in the story arc, Captain Vokel Shon sacrificed his ship, the Defiant class U.S.S. Belfast, to cover the player as they escape an escalating battle with an embarked VIP. Then, in the next mission, the player is tasked with infiltrating a Dominion occupied DS9 to assassinate the Jem'hadar commander. That Jem'hadar escapes to a ship and the mission transitions to a space battle. That space battle starts with the player's ship's shield drained to half because it had to fight its way in close enough to beam the player out and the battle goes downhill from there. Just then, a new ship bearing the name Enterprise, and commanded by Capt. Shon, warps in and completely reverses the course of the battle, just like the Enterprise did in First Contact against the Borg. Now, in my head canon, I picture that the Dominion decides to attend the now restarted conference, while the female changeling that was serving as general fleet commander of all Dominion forces in the alpha quadrant, and just so happens to be the VIP that was extracted from the battle where the Belfast was destroyed, is sent to experience life amongst the monks of P'jem, and Captain Vokel Shon is offered a long term command posting as Commanding Officer of the newly proven Odyssey class U.S.S. Enterprise. Captain Shon's most common assignments were hunting down Tal Shiar, who have been relegated to a fascist terrorist group trying to enforce the rule of the now almost totally collapsed Romulan Star Empire, and diplomatic relations with the newly formed Romulan Star Republic, the player faction if you decide to be a Romulan.
I think my favorite "offical" Enterprise is the E, "unofficial" and "official" is definitely the Enterprise F, I just love the Odyssey class. I'd actually love to find out more about Data as the captain though, to see his growth in the series play out. Also isn't the Enterprise J an official ship, thought it appeared in an episode somewhere with the future Federation or something.
Yes, J appears in ENT with a jump to the future, but we don't know much or anything about it (online there are lots of fan takes on the look and design, which are fun to watch), let alone anything about the captain(s) of that ship. I'd like to learn more about Enterprise J
Harriman always interested me. Wished they did something with him in a show. It would be interesting to see the guy who succeeded Kirk and how he dealt with that legacy
I agree, Enterprise B era would be the most interesting because there's a lot of room for storytelling there. I know they are doing a Picard show but I'd love to see flashback episodes with a young Picard on the Stargazer in kind of a parallel storyline like Westworld or Lost.
Enterprise D received a minor refit immediately after the initial Borg incursion and rescue of Picard as spoken by Riker at the end of Best Of Both Worlds pt. 2
Hey, Could I ask how did you make the timeline ? I mean the actual program you made it in not the info in it :) I want to make one myself but for historical events comparison, yet I can't seem to find any program to make it in :)
I want to see more on Captain Pike Obviously we are getting to see him in the new “Strange New Worlds” show coming soon but I’m hopeful that with that we may learn not only more on him but also more about Robert April and more on Captain Kirk’s rise to command
I'd love it if you did more videos on or including "beta" content regardless of what corner of the Multiverse it takes place in i still believe beta content counts as Star Trek and can be just as interesting as "Canon" if not more so with how some Works connect elements from across the franchise together which I imagine might be a gold mine for video topics.
According to "Ship of the Line" by Diane Duane, the first captain of the Enterprise 1701-E was Captain Morgan Bateson, from the Soyuz class USS Bozeman (STTNG Cause and Effect). The book is about Picard's first mission on the Enterprise E when he takes command of the ship from Bateson.
@@mikearcher9390 That is as much 'canon' as some items presented about B and C. "Appeared to be a temporal incident" concerning C when canon is very clear that there was.
Enterprise B ran into the jem'hadar when it went through the Wormhole before they found it in Deep Space Nine. They did release a plug on board and the ship was love to drift and the gamma quadrant. I read that in one of the Star Trek books about Enterprise B
Should Jellico not be the shortest Enterprise Captain at only a few weeks as Captain of the Enterprise. I know it was only a temporary assignment but he did have absolute command during that time and I recall the crew being worried because the ceremony of command transfer was normally only done during long term mission's.
That's right he should because if it were like that they never even used the regulation code I think it's regulation 12 section c that in an imminent threat a captain is to take command of any ship and that wasn't the case when he took the Enterprise
I find it interesting so many people are assuming the "Picard series" will: 1) be Picard-centric, 2) Take place post-Nemesis, 3) feature Patrick Stewart in the role of JLP. The only thing he said when he made his announcement was that Picard was coming back. It could be an animated series set on the Stargazer. It could be a live action show with Picard in Starfleet Academy. It could be a Mirror-Universe series about Mirror-Picard as a new Terran Emperor, reclaiming the Empire's former glory after the sad state we learn of in the DS9 Mirror episodes. It could literally be anything featuring the character of Jean-Luc Picard, with or without Patrick Stewart.
I think it’s pretty obviously that Patrick Stewart is going to be involved in the way he has been central in announcing it. Now, I do concede that there is a small chance that his involvement is one of a narrator talking about his youth, but i think this is unlikely to have gotten him as excited as he seems.
I'm not accusing him of misleading. He's not the one speculating. Again, all he's said is that the character is returning. I just think people are being really quick to read in to the announcement.
The 'captain Picard' show, as you call it, is actually called "The Captain Picard Show". And it's a sketch comedy talk show (blunt talk / SNL). A hilarious running gag is that no one believes the stories the Voyager crew tells. Harry Kim leads the house band and gets teased constantly because he's still an ensign.
I could never understand why Harry wasn't promoted to lieutenant during the seven seasons in Voyager. The only thing I can imagine was that Janeway always thought of him as the new officer just graduated from the Academy. Harry did a lot of great stuff that merited a promotion.
Y'know, thinking about it, it would be nice to see a storyline for the first ever five year mission of the Constitution Class Enterprise, with Captain Robert April - at-least in comic form. :)
i think the enterprise series is my favorit because it is not too too futureistic with the fact of slower speeds and the ship is smaller and less advance with limited communitcation. also its before the creation of the federation. it feels more like exploering a new frontier of technology
What if we count as interruptions every time they are off command inbetween? Situations like when Jellico commands the ENT-D. Would make it hard for Picard as he is out of the captains chair for multiple situations.
So will you update this video after the Picard series ends? I know I would seeing as b4 is written as having Datas personality but Data wont assert himself allowing b4 to grow and be himself. Of course that to is a rumor. I wonder if they will bring Lore into it or at least mention him like "You knew the prototype Lore Jean Luc? What happen to him?" Picard responds " He was found and rebuilt..activated.. Which was the worse thing we could have done. After a few run ins between him and his brother Data he was defeated deactivated and dismantled. Last i head they had used his parts for the waste disposal unit on the u.s.s. Titan..Riker has a a lot of friends at Starfleet."
Only the tv shows and movies count as canon. STO is approved by CBS but I have a feeling they are going to throw it out when they start with new shows. Somehow i don't think fans will accept the enterprise e being destroyed by species 8472, or the idea of it being "lost".
We don't talk about the J. Mostly because the only thing we know about it is its design, courtesy of a wall chart in some random hallway. I could watch series centered around the adventures of the B and C, separately of course, and only if it was done like classic _Trek_ . The focus is the characters, not the ships. And I do mean characters, plural. I don't want to be able to count the number of characters I know more than one sentence about on a single hand, which is, unfortunately, the state of _STD_ . I'd also like to know more about the _USS Crazy Horse_ and her crew, if only because that's one awesome name for a starship.
I really hope that we get to see the Enterprise-E in the new Picard series. It will be an old ship by then, at least 30 years old since the show is said to be taking place 20 years after the end of Nemesis. I'd like to believe that the ship lasted longer than the Enterprise-D since the galaxy class was designed for diplomatic exploration while the sovereign class was designed for war since the Federation finally woke up after getting their butt kicked at Wolf-359.
And how about the 24th or 25th century (not sure of the exact century) Enterprise (?) that appears in The Enterprise series that sends that time traveler to observe and assist Captain Archer against the Xyndi?
I honestly would like to see Picard stumble upon the Enterprise - B and give us the story and logs of what happened to her to create her disappearance. Possibly taking command of her and having her recommissioned as the StarGazer.
