Captive Breeding Hermit Crabs isn't easy, today we walk you through the challenges we had on Spawn Day and how we try to overcome them!
Yes, Hermit Crabs can breed in captivity! It is a common misconception among Hermit Crab keepers, that they can't breed. With the proper environment, Hermit Crabs will mate and produce eggs in captivity. The difficult, and near impossible part is getting the baby hermit crabs to land. Wish us luck!

It's great that people are doing this now,breeding animals in captivity is the best way to turn wild animals such as hermit crabs into actual pets. Though sadly I don't expect captive bred hermits to become even a considerable fraction of the amount sold annually for many,many years.

Came here from Snake Discovery, they went enting at a Costa Rica beach and found lots of native hermit crabs there! They didn't take any home, of course. But they said that Hermit Crabs were super hard to breed in captivity, so I went looking to see what all went into it. I found you and Mary Akers! Thank you for documenting your attempts, I'm learning a lot!

Happy to see another round of babies! One thing I've been giving considerable thought to is your documented problem of the Zoea congregating at the bottom. It seems like once that starts occurring en-masse it's the beginning of the end. I'm not a hydrodynamic expert or anything, but I have to believe there's some passive method of creating a circular current in your krisels to sweep 'em off the bottom. Is it possible to over-agitate the water? What if the air stone were only on one side of the krisel? I'm imagining a system similar in principle to aquarium under-gravel filters, where the rising airstone bubbles serve to force water around.
@CrabCentralStation
@CrabCentralStation 3 года назад
Yes! The krisiels are designed to create just that, a circular motion, mimicking the tide of the ocean. We used just one airstone at first... but the babies really congregated at the bottom so we added the second. You are definitely on the right track and we SO APPRECIATE your input. Thank you so very much for sharing 😊❤☺

Try turning the air stone off and filling the jar to just below the rim. Let it sit for just a few minutes to settle. Then slowly lower the jar into your larger tank as not to stir up sediment. The babies can swim out into the larger container but the sediment will stay in the jar.

you could probably make a specialized pooter with a large reservoir and suck them in with aquarium tubing. a pooter uses your breath to suck in small critters, generally a terrestrial insect collection method. that way you could vacuum them all up quickly then just empty the reservoir into the zoea tank

@@CrabCentralStation wouldnt the sand/food particles be more like normal ocean water than the crystal clean water?

Yes, but the ocean is vast and includes a ecosystem the works to keep the water quality in balance. In a closed system, water quality is a huge challenge. The krisiels are not filtered, because the filter would just such up the babies. So, we have to be very diligent in monitoring and keeping good water quality.
