House martins build their nests using mud, usually on buildings and this offers a good opportunity to photograph them. You just need a muddy puddle.
Every day for a week I topped up this puddle as we did not get much rain. The House martins were coming down to it, but not as often as I would have liked.
I used the Buteo single person hide for most of the pictures. The camera was the OM-1 Mk2 and the Lumix G9 Mk2 for the slow motion video and the lens the OM 150-400mm.
It was also a great opportunity to use the incredible Procapture feature.

Some great photographs of a very difficult subject to catch in flight. I used to have these birds building nests on the verandah of my last house and I can tell you they make a real mess. I would estimate that only half of the mud they collect stays on the nest whilst the rest falls to the ground. Not far away was a horse riding school. The nests were so numerous at one stage part of the facia on the stables collapsed under the weight of the combined mud nests.

This is great Mike. I was at a live Sports Broadcast technology event in Denver this week. Live sports will almost certainly not go 4K, the industry is moving to 1080P HDR, so I'd stay with that if I were you. Cheers. Love watching your videos.

you know it's quite funny this video was uploaded a day before i just let go of one of these cuties i had to rescue and it pains me i couldn't keep it but i had to help it get back on its wings, since it was only a fledgling which was growing attached to me and there was nowhere to go with it, so i took care of it for 3 days until it became more alive than i found it, i've only had to let go of it, and it hits different knowing you'd want it to live still and hoping life will be as merciful as i was to it, and that was that, i will miss it, back to my ordinary life, sometimes it only takes a little bird to realize how precious life is, as precious as this video (which i've totally didn't find it by chance or was it by chance what brought me here? i've only wanted to know more about martins, trying to comfort myself into thinking that i have done what i could do best, not knowing a thing about them, i only hope i did what was right, right for its life, right or wrong for me, because who wouldn't want to be selfish and keep all manner of wee creatures for their own desires?) and the dedication put into it which will make me remember what i had, thank you.

@@MikeLaneFRPS I have more chance of walking on water ! 😂 Its difficult enough getting them sharp as stills, let alone as video. If I had a Panasonic G9mkII I would have ago at 4K 120frps. With the OM1mkII not autofocusing in slow motion, its virtually impossible with manual focus. I did do some at 4k 60fps, but its too fast even slowed down by 50%.

Love your channel, Mike. I discovered pro capture when i bought my EM1 mk2 when it was released. My ambition was to nail the "dollars" on the dollar bird's wings which can only be seen during flight. Thanks to the light weight of the m43 camera and 300/4 lens plus tc i was able to hand hold the combo on half press for more than 15 minutes before the tardy thing took flight! I now use the OM1 and the same lens.

Great footage! And great procapture. 300p you can slow down to 24p getting 12,5x slow. If you film in PAL 25p then when using 120p S&Q you can get 4,8x instead of 4x slow. I wonder if we ever get 4K 240p from any brand.

Inspirational stuff as usual Mike. I remember as a kid hiding in a pile of pallets in a farm yard trying to get a similar shot with my Practica 35mm. Waited a week to get the prints back to admire the blurred efforts. Not sure Practica offered pro capture back then - image the rolls of film and developing costs needed if they did.

Both your patience, persistence and what modern cameras can to is really amazing. I was shooting a small bird eating flowers off neighbor's balcony yesterday. Just had time to grab my old Lumix g85 with a 500mm mirror lens. Perfect focal length, but not very sharp. Today, I will set up my g9 properly and have it ready for when he comes back. Still need to look up what kind of bird it is (10cm, red head, white band, black band brown back, black wings with a yellow strip. Looks like modern art. Thanks.

Mike, great stuff. Lovely shots. A couple of questions: how many species have you photographed in your lifetime? Do you get more ProCap keepers with the mk2 when birds fly directly at the camera? For me this would be a reason to upgrade. Thank you!
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS Месяц назад
I have no idea. I have been to over 60 countries photographing birds, many more than once and sometimes for months at a time. Many pictures were on slides though. Procapture does not effect the ability of the AF so you just need to know is the AF better on the Mk2 than the Mk1. It took me many weeks to convince myself that it is better, but it is only slightly. You will not notice a huge improvement. So the answer is yes it is better when coming towards the camera, but still not perfect. The bird going sideways is going to be more sucessful. Sometimes when I know the bird is coming towards me I maunally focus in front knowing that one or more frames will be in focus. I then dream of what the Mk3 will be able to do.

Great video Mike well I have sacrificed my 50 mp Sony A1 for the A9III with Pre Capture. Diving into the world of Pre capture . I am surprised at the number of images taken ! Also the number of unique shots I didn't see at the time. I see you use .5 of a Second . Do you use Photo mechanic or any other Software to cull your images ?
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS Месяц назад
At first I used to mess around with the numbers before and after pressing the button, but now leave it at about 25 fps before and 25 fps after. Don't feel the need to change it. I use Breezebrowser to cull. I have used it ever since changing to digital and it is easier to use what you know than learn something new. Others work just as well I am sure.
