One of the most iconic images to come out of the Second World War was the photograph taken of Major General Erwin Rommel standing with Major General Victor Fortune after the surrender of the 51st (Highland) Division in the town of St Valery-en-Caux.
The day of the surrender was well documented, particularly by Rommel himself, who was a keen amateur photographer.
In this first in an occasional series, we look at some of the images from that day, take a deeper look at them , and see what we can learn.

Very informative and well presented video. Well done. My Grandfather was within 202nd Battery on outskirts when captured.

I visited St Valerie this year in June 2023 after D day celebrations with a Group of Scottish Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders ex Servicemen and we were made welcome by the Mayor in a civic reception at the Town hall and a wreath laying and church service , the Scottish 51st Highland Division is remembered and respected in St Valerie to this day , Lest we forget

In 1944 Field Marshal Montgomery as they advanced along the coast gave the capture if St Valery to the men of the 51st. He also gave the capture of Dieppe to the Canadians.

My maternal grandfather served with the 7th Bn The Norfolk Regiment (Pioneers), with the 51st at St Valery and was taken POW. We still have photos of the POW camp he was held in. He eventually was released from captivity by a Red Cross prisoner exchange due to failing health weeks before the long march. This was a fascinating insight into not only the history of the 51st but also into Rommels personality and interests. This event is definitely worthy of a full documentary
