After moving here to the Corbières in April, I needed to take the time to settle in the new place and get to know the garden and the wild garrigue landscape we have all around us.
Heavy rain showers in May went some way towards alleviating the two-year long drought in this part of France and the garrigue came alive with colourful flowers and buzzing insects. I started taking photographs of the plants I came across and enjoyed identifying all the species, noting down the Latin names as well as their common names in English and French.
Needing to ease myself gently back into art making, I came up with the idea of documenting my observations in a Moleskine concertina sketchbook I'd had since the Barcelona Urban Sketchers Symposium in 2013 and never found a use for!
The completed sketchbook is just a snapshot of the nature I've observed over a 3-month period from May to August.
