Thanks for making this mummy-free video! A lovely collection of dead heads you have there. Not surprisingly, Della Magna strikes again. And look at upstarts Roman Szmal and Renesans bucking the trend with their semi-transparent versions!

Hahaha, that's hilarious! I need to keep this space wholesome and a mummy-filled video would be a "grave" misconduct. Kidding aside, I agree that Della Magna's Caput Mortuum is a top performer in this department. Thank you for watching and for being here!

Wild to think that there was a time that there were so many mummies people were trying to find creative ways to use them, including grinding them up to make paint!

Thank you for being here. Glad you enjoyed the video! You will love Roman Szmal's Caput Mortuum. That was how I discovered the brand actually! Nowadays, for Caput Mortuum, I have been reaching for Della Magna more frequently. I love its pigment performance and sophistication.

This is one of my favorite colors! In comparison, they are all so similar, yet so different. The Renesans was a real surprise, thanks for swatching that one, I would have been very annoyed if I had bought it expecting the usual caput mortum hue, though it is a beautiful convenience color (which is strangely growing on me). The Della Magna has lovely texture. I am getting an idea that most of these would make great skin color shadow for a portrait of a very old person. The granulation would be great for wrinkles.
@stiviwonders
@stiviwonders 11 месяцев назад
This is a constant pigment on my palette too! I love using it for landscape, botanical, and still life. The granulation will be useful for adding textures to rocks and boulders. So many possibilities! For portrait, the granulation will be excellent for the eye area or for highlighting the natural contour of the face. It's a true versatile pigment! Della Magna's pigment sophistication is clear on this one. So fascinating to work with! As for Renesans, to be fair, their half-pans are properly labeled. Another reason why pigment education is crucial to our growth as watercolorists. Lovely seeing you here! I will be publishing painting videos that use this pigment down the road. I started with pigment discovery videos so we'll have a library of pigments as reference when that time comes.

@@stiviwonders I can't wait to see your painting videos. They will be great if they are anything like your elegant swatching videos! In the meantime, I will play with mixing something close to the Renasans caput mortum simply because I am intrigued by the color, and it will be a good exercise. ❤

Defenitly the caput mortuum from Sennelier is the most beautifull!!! Renesens is a bit like Naphthamide Maroon from D Smith. Thanks for showing the differences.

Old Holland is one of the oldest brands, I believe. I am glad that you discovered them through this video. Their Caput Mortuum has excellent re-solubility and the paint consistency is lovely to work with. You didn't mention where you're from but I hope Old Holland is accessible in your area.

Interesting history at the start of the video! I like the granulation on the Della Magna paint. I liked the Renesans one...I think I can mix something with my PR101 and that PV23 which I think is Dioxazine Violet. Great video, as usual!

It is delightful to hear that you enjoyed this video! We are indeed fortunate to inherit all these pigments from the old days. Della Magna's pigment sophistication came through as usual. So easy to fall in love with it. If I may share, Caput Mortuum was how I discovered Roman Szmal Aquarius some years ago. It's lovely to work with. I love your idea of making your own "Renesans' Caput Mortuum" mix. This way, you could also vary the pigments depending on the direction you need for your painting. Thank you for being here! I am really enjoying your input.

Very nice luv. I have Sennelier's Caput and that's it from😢your list. It's wonderful. However, I think Winsor & Newton looks better than a sennelier tube. I am surprised how Della (I think it was Della) ads violet to theirs. Really, old Holland would be my ultimate favorite of the bunch. What do you think Stivi? Thanks again, James
@stiviwonders
@stiviwonders 11 месяцев назад
Hello, James! Happy to hear that you enjoyed the video! Della Magna's Caput Mortuum is mono-pigmented. Absolutely fascinating! The pigment performance is so sophisticated. It's Renesans Intense that adds PV23 to to their Caput Mortuum, which is surprising. Sennelier's take represents Caput Mortuum's heritage really well. It is elegant and richly-pigmented as well. Roman Szmal's, Winsor & Newton's and Old Holland's are in the same league. It all boils down to preference, I believe. I am glad Old Holland called to you! Thank you for being here!

Weirdly enough, my brown eyes looked like the color of caput mortuum, can anyone explain it to me what color it is? I tried searching everything and the closest is other than mahogany.

It's a deep earthy reddish-brown with hints of intense violet.
