Study this tutorial and get the most out of your car audio investment by understanding your electrical system. It takes power to make power and if you don't have it, you will not get rated power from your amp and you decrease reliability.
Back to Basics -- Car Audio 101
By Mike Stiers
So you've decided to upgrade your car stereo system? A great deal of research and planning should go into this purchase since there is a lot to consider. Do you desire a nice upgrade of your factory speakers, are you looking for a Sound Quality overall of speakers, subwoofers and amplifiers, or are you designing a vision-blurring SPL machine? It is important to make a list of exactly what you are looking to replace or add to your audio system so that you can prepare your electrical system for the investment to come.
Many people do not realize that their vehicles' factory electrical system was not designed for aftermarket audio equipment. In fact, most factory electrical systems can only handle an audio system of 600 to 1200 watts. The lower end of the scale being the smaller vehicles and most foreign rides, and the upper end being large trucks and sport utility vehicles. As you increase demand, you need to look at upgrading your battery, alternator and most importantly your "Big 3."
BATTERY
The battery provides reserve to the engine during starting, discharges current to accessories, acts as a buffer between the alternator and all accessories and after market audio equipment, as well as powers everything active in your vehicle when the vehicle is off but in the Accessory (ACC) position on the ignition. Your battery or batteries are extremely important in determining what aftermarket audio equipment can be added and survive in your application. As the demand becomes too great for the alternator and the voltage begins to drop, the battery is relied on for its' reserve power until the demand is reduced and the alternator can recover. This is why batteries are commonly rated in several ways. The most common rating is Amp Hour (AH) rating. This is a unit of measurement for battery capacity, obtained by multiplying a current flow in amperes by the time in hours of discharge. (Example: A battery which delivers 5 amperes for 20 hours delivers 5 amperes times 20 hours, or 100 ampere-hours. So, this 100AH battery can supply 5 amps per hour for 20 hours before dropping to 10.5volts. At 10.5volts, the battery is fully discharged.) Since manufacturers use different discharge periods to establish their own AH rating, Reserve Capacity is relied on heavily in the industry to
simplify battery selection. Reserve Capacity is the number of minutes a battery can maintain a useful voltage under a 25 ampere discharge. The higher the minute rating, the greater the battery's ability to run all of your electronics for a longer period before recharging is necessary. Deep Cycle batteries are different than starting batteries because they have been specially designed for multiple complete discharges without losing reserve capacity, but Cranking batteries will lose reserve capacity quickly with repeated hard discharges. This is why Deep Cycle batteries are ideal for the high demand of aftermarket car audio amplifiers. Once you have determined the audio equipment you are interested in for your purchase, you should contact a reputable battery manufacturer for their recommended battery based on total wattage in the aftermarket audio system. This could mean a simple replacement of your factory battery or adding additional batteries depending on what you have planned for your amplifiers.

Jake, this tutorial is designed for the average to above average audio enthusiast. Though Peukert's Law has been verified, it takes an above average level tutorial which is easy to follow and makes it much more difficult. The more intense the equations, the less interested and willing most people are to take notice. This tutorial is valid and will indeed get you the results required for after market audio systems. Anyone wanting to expand their knowledge should reference Peukert's Law for sure.

The sure sign that you need to replace your alternator is when you are in a situation that you know you have enough battery reserve for the amps in your application, but your voltage at the batteries with the ams off is below 14V. Your amp(s) connect to your battery(s) and your alternator charges your battery(s). Please check out the Alternator video.

@boyrocker03 Any charge difference between the two batteries would be due to the size of the power and ground wire as well as the distance. This is resistance and why it is so important to use the biggest size wire possible with or without having a secondary battery. Having a secondary battery is better than not having one because without a secondary battery, your amplifiers are seeing that voltage drop through resistance even worse! The second battery offers storage and reserve. ;-)

So this is why 15 volt systems work so well. So I have some math to do. My system coming up will be 2 alts 4 or 5 batteries and multible amps. There are some batteries out there that are ment for deep cycle and starting. Batteries im looking at are this way and are very large. Almost 200 AH per battery. We'll see. Great video Mike. You have no idea how much it helps.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc

@MrBobby3342 As you add multiple batteries to a stock alternator you put more strain on that alternator and the overall voltage your system rests as with the vehicle running and no accessories drawing will be lower. A stock alt and stock batt should charge around 14.4V. When you add another battery you generally see your voltage drop a few tenths but you have increased reserve. That is why I always like to see the alt upgraded but I do understand budget constraints.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc

@master9716 I have seen cars get shut down under high demand. But, in most cases when the voltage drops below 12.5V your amp will begin clipping and go into Protection mode. Once in Protection, the amp draws nothing and your voltage will climb back up like normal. In worst case scenarios, you drop below 12.0V and components in the amplifier become damaged.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 13 лет назад
@puddle331 If you wire two batteries in series, you will increase the voltage but have the same amperage as one battery. If you wire in parallel you will keep the same voltage, but increase the amperage. So, wiring a pair of 6V batts in series will result in 12V, but your amp hr rating will still be 12 since that is the rating of one.
@mushrooms301
@mushrooms301 14 лет назад
I have a question about deep cycle battery ratings. When I look at the AmpereHours do I look at the CCA (cold cranking amps) or CA (cranking amps?) And also what does RC siginify? # CA: 810 AH # CCA: 650 AH # RC: 98
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 14 лет назад
@choppedbydjdc No. Kinetik rates their batteries by the watts they can support. You can't get a 1400watt battery to run your car and support a 1600watt amplifier. You could leave your primary battery installed and add the HC1400 in the back with the amplifier.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 13 лет назад
@eppi1064 I would not recommend adding a cap as your electrical system will not benefit from that addition. I would recommend upgrading your primary battery, or adding a small Kinetik power cell in the back by the amplifier. This should provide sufficient reserve for the electrical system.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 14 лет назад
@JVoisel The reserve of the batteries are always suggested since they will reduce the strain on your alt when under heavy demand.
@tom58c
@tom58c 15 лет назад
Much better current flow between the 2 batteries. With this ive seen the 2 batteries work better together to keep each other sustained. If you have the wire for it you can run wire strait from the alt to the battery, pos and neg. Like Steve Meade does. But this is really more for High end systems that need huge power.

i just put a yellow top optima battery in my trunk. im pushing 2 type r 12's with a hfi2000.1 amp. theres is little dimming, but nothing compared to what it was. awesome battery, and it comes with a 3 year in store replacement. can't go wrong with that
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 15 лет назад
Capacitor on storage devices that quickly discharge under heavy demand. They are helpful if you already have the proper electrical system for your after market audio equipment. If you don't have the alternator/battery combo to meet the demands of your amps then adding a cap is bad. The cap will actually create more of a draw on the electrical system and starve your amp to recharge.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 14 лет назад
@TheGeorges123 My suggestion is to run the power wire from the primary battery + to the secondary battery +. Fuse at the output of battery 1 and on the input of battery 2. This will protect you incase the power wire becomes severed from front to back. Ground the secondary battery in the back of the vehicle. Then connect the amplifiers' positive and negative to the secondary battery.

tuning the amps gain you'll need a oscope, but you can do it partially with a dmm. play a 50-60hz testone on repeat and check the speaker output for the correct volt/@1ohm. should be about 37v. make sure everything is set @0. depend on your sub/box for tuning wit lpf,subsonic and bass. 12'clock is safe 4 everything pretty much. but set lpf @80, subsonic@ 25-30. lower means lower notes gonna play. cut it off to your sub. some can play low in the right box. just be safe with it. pros can shim in.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 14 лет назад
@flint1810 Every vehicle and application is different. If your alt can't charge the multiple batts then your voltage will be below 13.8V without load from the amp.

@greenesthaze You have a difficult system on your hands. Your factory electrical components will not handle 16-18V constant. You will need to keep your factory alt and batt to run your vehicle. Then you will need a secondary alt with voltage regulator and a bank of 16V batteries to obtain the 16-18V that you desire. Optima batteries are 12V in nature and will be damaged if you charge then too far above 14.4V.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 14 лет назад
@rallotubbs1 You will only know for certain if the alt is needed after you install the secondary battery in the back and monitor charge voltage without the stereo on and then voltage drop with the stereo turned up. In both cases the car must be running. If you are reading voltage lower than 14.0V at the amp with it off but car running then you should look into the upgraded alternator.

@titleistD2 All battery manufacturers will provide the AH rating if requested. From cruising through the big lead acid battery manufacturers websites I see they not listing AH rating. The dry cell and deep cycle battery manufacturers are still providing it though. CCA is important to lead acid manufacturers because their batteries are used to start vehicles.

@LostTheGameXD Your best bet would be to contact Kicker directly as they claim abnormally high levels of efficiency in that particular amplifier. I know that a few years ago at CES, a REP told me that they require a certain amount of batteries and multiple alternators to run it.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 15 лет назад
Yes, you should look into adding an additional battery. 3200watts is not possible on a stock electrical system.
@ghozt369
@ghozt369 15 лет назад
yes its bad to have two batteries on a stock alternator. the reason why is cause the alternator is going to struggle charging those two batteries. kinda like how you wanna match rms from a sub to the rms wattage of a amp. if you got a stop alt its only going to put out maybe 60 to 80 amps recomended for one battery. where as you put a aftermarket alt with more ampers and the two batteries you should be fine if the alt puts out good. always shorten the length of grounds btw.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 14 лет назад
@keithmoonlethal101 Optima Yellow top batteries are very nice. But, they are only capable of supporting up to 1800 watts. Kinetik makes much larger batteries designed specifically for car audio which is why we recommend them.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 14 лет назад
@MRFUNKY323 You could consider wiring the coils in parallel and subs in parallel for a final 1-Ohm load. A Hifonics Brutus BRZ1200.1D would power them sufficiently. I don't typically recommend Optima but since that is what you are interested in, I would consider the Yellow Top group 31.

@MaxxsonicsUSAInc

@EGHC Both are amazing batteries! Both companies rate their batteries differently so it makes the decision difficult. I know that the D3100 is better than the HC2400, but I believe that the HC3800 may be superior to the D3100 in the watts it can support.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 13 лет назад
@dwade931 You might be ok with an additional Kinetik battery in the back, or a single Kinetik 2400 in the front to power the entire vehicle and system. If you decide to replace the alternator then you should look into contacting XS Power or Ohio Generator as they will recommend options available for your particular vehicle.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 13 лет назад
@8320884 CCA is a rating used for starting batteries. Amp Hours is ideal, but all manufacturers rate the batteries differently. Lead Acid batteries are tradition starting batteries. AGM are maintenance free batteries and typically superior in car audio applications.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 14 лет назад
@culdntthinka124 If your amp is 4800wrms then you will want to consider an upgraded alternator and a pair of Kinetik HC2400's as a suggestion. Without the electrical upgrades your voltage will see huge drops, your amp will be starved of the current it requires to produce power and eventually the amp will be damaged.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 14 лет назад
@THUGGINFORLIFE08 I'm not sure what will fit under the hood without modification. If you are willing to modify the battery box then I would recommend a Kinetik HC2000 or HC2400. Otherwise see if an HC1200 will fit upfront and put an HC800 or HC1200 in the back near the amp. This should provide solid reserve.
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 14 лет назад
@Rjjr510 If you are simply looking to add a pair of subs and a single amp, I would recommend looking at a pair of Hifonics ZX12D4's powered by a Hifonics HFi1000D or even an HFi1500D. Both SonicElectronix and OnlineCarStereo are Authorized Internet Retailers. This package is under $500 and those Zeus are super crisp!
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc
@MaxxsonicsUSAInc 14 лет назад
@THUGGINFORLIFE08 If you aren't turning it up a lot and getting that low of voltage drop, you may have a bad alternator or battery. Autozone will be able to test your alt and batt to determine their status. If both test out good then I would recommend an upgraded alt first and foremost.

@ibanezrocker411 You should be in good shape with your proposed electrical upgrades based on 1000watts. The BIG 3 with 4 gauge would be very helpful for your install. The reason I fuse the wire from alt + to batt + is to protect my vehicle in case there is a short. It is not required.

@Amarpreet23 All manufacturers rate their batteries differently. (Voltage, Temperature and Resistance vary during testing) Kinetik provides the rms watts that the battery is capable of supporting.

I want to run 2 12" kicker L7s 2 ohm and the watts rms is 1500 watts for each sub i want the system to be loud but also where i can drive around daily without any problems of shortage of power and what not. What amp should i use? im driving a chevy malibu, i'm wondering should i get another battery? Also what kind of wires should i use to hook it up?

You say auto batteries are most commonly rated in amp hours. I am yet to see a battery rated this way. I can only see Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) which does not seem to have any relation. I did the math and I need a battery with at least 118 AH. Are only deep cycle batteries rated with (AH)?

@PASTORTENNISON I definetly recommend checking out Kinetik Audio's website. They have a simply battery calculator where you can enter the total rms for your amplifiers and it will suggest the battery(s) you need. Sounds like you have a great system and have done some very important upgrades so far.

hey mike, i did your calculation for the AH and it came out to be 401.5 AH, when i went to the kinetik battery website it says for 5000W rms i should use 3 x hc1800 which is 81 AH per battery, well 81 x 3 = 243AH....I'm a little lost, could you help me please

I need help. I have a massive audio p3000.1 amp. I uprgarded but stock alternator up to 90 amps fron 60. Then i put a second 200 amp alternator on. I had to optima red tops. 710 cca and 50ah each but i just bought a kinetik 1800 (1900cca 81ah) to replace one red top battery. The amp puts out around 3100 rms. Is my electrical ok or do i need more. My sysem runs about 15.5 volts.
