I have to disagree on the title Bry, Id take a swirled out or marred clear coat from a car cover anytime over oxidized/uv sun damaged clear coat due to not having a cover at all. In short id still go for the cover jmho.

Same. I'll take swirls over cancer (oxidized clear coat).

My case for using a cover is 1. I have a black car 2. My paint is already swirly as I am second owner and the car is 12 years old 3. I am more concerned with the clear coat failing from the brutal sun. (the near perfect headlight lenses when I got the car already started oxidizing) Until I get an in-door garage, I will keep my car under the sheets.

Excellent tip on not spraying a panel prep directly on a panel after a polishing set! I did actually fine my panel prep more troublesome to use when i used it right after yesterday on my re-sprayed 2 car doors. Usually i would polish a whole panel before i use panel prep but to reduce steps i will try spraying it into the towel. I might be polishing my other 2 doors today while the weather is good!

Totally agree about car covers. I used a cheap one during spring time to protect 20 year old Jaguar paint that was being stained by blossom tree petals. Wish I never bothered. The seams on the cover really do marr the paint. Any time there was a slight breeze blowing I'm sure I could hear the car groaning in pain.

Put a soft indoor cover on, then the cheap out door water proof cover. The outdoor cover will slide over the inner cover, and not the paint. Shoes without socks, give you blisters.

3 golden rules for car covers: 1) Get one with a soft fleece interior 2) Clean car thoroughly before putting a cover on 3) clean cover thoroughly before putting the cover on. Even then, its really hard to not get any dirt between the cover and car, and some damage in inevitable. When your only choice it to park under a tree, and you need to have the car there over winter, a cover is still worth it.
@zerocal76

Rule 0 that comes before all rules: 0. Don't use a car cover at any time, indoors or outdoors. Apply a ceramic coating (or whatever new stuff they got out these days) after a decent paint correction and try to keep it away from the sun.

I just purchased the car and it's being shipped to me pictures look great but I'm sure it will need some type of prep. I know it's you used the metal oxide coating Is that better than ceramic?

Car cover you say are not recommended? Just remember BIRD DROPPINGS ARE MUCH WORSE. If one doesn't have a garage it's much better than nothing, unless one wants to have a surely needed paint job. There's nothing really ideal unless one lives in an area where birds don't exist. A cover can seem more of a hassle for many. My car is 10 years old, and looks brand new as a result of a good cover, and excellent management. I do have minor marks on driver's side roof rail, that a body shop removes for me. Mild buffing on occasion where wet sanding is not needed is still better than having highly acidic bird droppings which if left long enough, will be further in your paint than most marks. That will often require wet sanding or sometimes a new paint job. Only ideal situation is driving from a garage to another garage for several hours when parked, that's enclosed of course. I look over my car with a flashlight before I go to bed, and pray that nothing is left for too long when I do get bird droppings wherever i go. That could be a movie, or out to dinner. I have two cars. I use my luxury car sparingly. I go over my cover with a damp cloth, as well as go over the paint if it's dusty, and take it for a weekly spin of 2 miles or so, and place the cover back on only to be sure to check it over, that there are no bird droppings. A bird I believe a few years back flew under and between the cover, and paint and left a stain on a windy day. Needed repainting. I ordered a cover from coverking. I need to have Mark's buffed out. However still better than no car cover at all. A body shop who has a vested interest in repairing vehicles, wants to paint.

The softness of new car paint is so frustrating. They have to be ceramic coated full stop. I had dialed in my black 2020 Mazda 3, coated with Adam's graphene. The graphene coating failed so I took it off. In just a few months of safe washing without a coating, the paint was scratched and marred to unacceptable levels. I've had CSL/EXO on for two months and I've not had so much as a love mark. I probably should have gotten CSU off the bat.

For anyone interested in gloss meters, everything said in this video about gloss meters is incorrect. Ironic how he mentions that a lot of individuals that have them don't know how to use them, unfortunately him being one of them. (as a "professional detailer" you need to be aware of what information you are putting out into the world) Using the correct measurement geometry increases resolution and improves the correlation of results with human perception of quality. The 60 degree angle is best employed on mid gloss samples measuring between 10 and 70 gloss units. High gloss surfaces which measure above 70 gloss units should be assessed using the 20 degree angle. For anyone measuring at 60 degrees are getting a higher gloss unit readings making their correction skills look better than they actually are. The 20 degree reading will show a more accurate and lower gloss unit. (a true measurement so to speak) And the higher end accurate units that are worth thousands will have haze percentage and reflectance percentage allowing you to work on refining the paint for even better results. I work with the world leaders of paint inspection equipment.
