This video is going to be popular amongst the tree huggers . You guys are completely missing the point of this video. My sister lives hours away. Option 1 was to do nothing and she drives home with a car that sometimes won't go over 35mph , try merging on an express way like that , it could also damage the engine because at full throttle I could hear timing chain rattle.....option 2 I hollow out the convertor and she can drive it safely and not destroy her engine. Of course the convertor should get replaced, this was a "bandaid fix" , no different from putting a plug in your tire in a pinch and later taking it to get the tire repaired properly or replaced.

I just went through this exact problem. And my mechanic came to the same conclusion with the same repair since my state doesn't require emissions testing. Restored the power and driveability as years before.

So, technically speaking, you could get it smogged with the OEM cat, as it is? Then put on a non-OEM cat. Makes it registerable and Sellable

Old video but good video 2020 elantra limited. Exhaust manifold getting red hot. Car drives great! No bogging. No hesitation. But when driving hard for a bit, boy does it glow. Would you say thats the cat on the manifold that is clogged. I hove no codes or cehck engine light

Couldn't you clean it/wash it with lacquer/thinner? And/or a non corrosive cleaner? and leave it overnight? especially if she's on vacation, which means she won't need it for a few days. When you mentioned "Hollowing" out the cat, I chuckled because that's what Turbo Audi people do.. Plus using an o2 sensor spacer/bung...EDIT: Never mind.. It looks like you fixed it.. Glad she saved a ton of money in the process.. Now she needs to pay you, with a nice WARM meal.. LOL!!!

Its only temporary if it doesnt work right? I would just stick the "test pipe/bung" on it and be done with it. Then she will not get the P420 code showing up. Although I know some cars depend on the downstream sensor to adjust fuel trims or what ever. Evidently that one doesnt. Bought my moms 2006 Buick Lucerne and the cat was failing. I just "adjusted" the O2 downstream sensor and everything is fine. Its not plugged though.

Back in the day, I had a S-10 with the 2.2. I had a converter go bad. I replaced it at a muffler shop. About 20k miles, the converter failed. I replaced it again. About 10k it failed again. After that I heated it red hot with a tourch and used a crobar to ream the internals out of the converter. Did a few revs and blew its guts out. Reconnected everything and attached a new muffler. Drove great and didn't have a single issue for another 130k miles. The truck ran so good without the cat. It also would get over 30mpg. I think the EPA is more interested in filling landfills and selling cars than reducing hydro carbons produced from the car running. Way more polition comes from the manufacturing of a car than the opperation of one. Taking the catalytic converter out increases the efficiency of the vehicle and helps gas milage and power.

Have same issue with my 2016 Tucson. My mechanic need to check further but he guessed it's a blocked cat. Hyundai here in canada quoted me CAD$3300 just for the CAT and a few hours labor plus tax to replace. Probably $4000 all in for this issue - crazy!

sometimes we watch these videos to brainstorm our own problems, once you said rattle it sparked a memory of what the heck is that noise, so I am replacing the cats on my 2008 dodge charger, she's got lack of power especially after a highway trip or it idles or its over 79 degrees out. Everything is new, from block out. She has a problem at first start with a up and down idle and sputter then evens out until it goes open loop. I finally got a code that went away but it was b2s2 stuck in rich, that could be a different issue or related to the cats. I have hp tuners for the car and ever since the update I can't see my o2 sensors anymore, but I run learning (off) peddle adaption (off) and I have it getting its values from the map.

There should be some backpressure it really depends on the vehicle (turbo charger and even the amount of cats type of exhaust will effect it) most manufacturers will provide a specific range of backpressure but a general rule of thumb is anything over 8-9psi is too much (for a NA engine)

Interesting video. Thank you. I am wondering if you simply removed the 1st O2 sensor, would there be enough escape of exhaust to notice an improvement of power? Of course the engine would fault to open loop (no O2 sensor to regulate the mixture) and will trigger a fault code. I'm not suggesting it as a fix, just as a quick easy test before replacing (or gutting) the cat. Your test for blocked resonator/muffler was good, but as you guessed it was the cat. I don't think I've ever experienced a blocked muffler... but I guess mice can do anything, anywhere.

I replaced the air filter, the MAP sensor. It didn't fix the issue, I took it to the mechanic and he said there was no power, and he didn't know what to do because there was no code.

They usually get blocked by excessive oil consumption. Was it using oil?

One question if you have time to answer? Did any warning lights come on afterwards (due to oxygen sensor that's present)

I think you can try to put a spacer in the down stream o2 to fools the ecm so it doesn't throw a code cat bwlow threshold.

Why not use a chemical, like a c.l.r. or something to break up the garbage inside without hurting the platinum?

Could putting an aftermarket O2 sensor cause the same symptoms? I feel that after I replace my cat and my upstream and downstream O2 sensors I have the same issue, or should I look somewhere else first?

dude the car needs to have some back pressure if u disconnect the muffler its gonna lose power completely

Bit of advice: 1) With the cost of cats right now, you should have cut it off and sold it. The rare materials are still recyclable and valuable. Not to mention the health hazards that come with drilling out the material. 2) I am very surprised you did not trick the downstream O2 sensor with a resistor & transistor. You'll have very rich combustion if the downstream O2 reads high after the cat delete.
