My buddies 4-post lift broke a cable while he was raising his 1933 Ford 4-door sedan street rod when it was about 2 1/2 feet off the floor . The right front side ramp hit the floor . The street rod slid a little on the ramp but didn't contact anything . I just happen to get there about 3 minutes after it happened and helped him jack up the ramp and put jack stands under the lift to keep it from falling any more . This was an extremely nice 33 all original steel car he owned for over 40 years . He worked on it for 20 years converting it into a street rod . The 33 Ford is like the car Bonnie and Clyde were killed in . His car had a 350 Chevy engine , 700R transmission , Corvette rearend and a dropped Super Bell 4-bar front suspension . Red in color , Tan leather interior and in-dash heat and A/c . Simply beautiful car and it almost getting destroyed by a cable breaking on a 4-post lift . Glad it wasn't any higher as it would have really done a lot of damage . Lifts are great but cables break a lot more often than we hear about . Great video men .
That would have been terrifying on a classic car like that. I'm glad I got to practice with an easily replaceable Honda pilot so I'm ready for something nicer if it happens again. Thank you
They probably would have if we asked for it. the shop manager said " It's down!!!?? I'm SO Happy I could kiss you " to the boss when he told them we we're done. It's always nice to help someone with a difficult problem.
The cable that broke is a equalizer cable making sure both sides stay at an even level. Rotary lift cables should be inspected for damage and adjustment often and replaced every 3-5 years or when any wear shows on the wire rope. This was in an oil change bay that gets used many times per day. rotarylift.com/blog/90-second-know-how-two-post-cable-adjustment/#:~:text=On%20a%20two%2Dpost%20lift,keep%20the%20car%20moving%20smoothly. Here's the manufacture's explanation of the maintenance.
