for anyone just stumbling upon this video, one more thing i dont think was mentioned in this that i recommend doing and have done for all my sprayers and airbrushes is polishing the needle you use. I use flitz polish and a damp microfiber and it takes any abrasions or scores on the needle right off and helps prevent dry tipping as a result. smooth needle, smooth operator
I would highly recommend extreme care when using the small cleaning "rods" (the file-like tool) on aircaps, as they may deform the small air passages if you're not careful. The same thing goes for the fluid tip (I call it the fluid nozzle); use the small brushes instead of the cleaning rods. Lastly, I didn't see you using any lubricants when reassembling the spray gun. I usually wipe some vaseline on the needle where it bears against the needle packing nut. I also put a drop of gun oil on the trigger pivot pin.
Please do a video on actually mixing paint/clear. I know there are many different brands with different procedures but if you could just show us how you do it, I think it would be beneficial to many people. I believe mixing the paint or clear correctly can really impact the final result. Thanks.
Great video,I've always used oxygen acetylene welding nozzle cleaners for the air cap, never even thought of buying proper made for the job ones, thanks for taking the time to go through the whole process as I'm sure we have all now had explained why we should proper clean after every job rather than just blowing some gun wash through
I'm really careful about *not* jamming the raw twisted wire ends of the cylindrical brushes into the tapered cone of the fluid nozzle . . . or into any place where the fluid needle seats or places which must make a leakproof air or fluid tight connection. Also, those orfice (hole) cleaning wires must be sized correctly or you'll ream out the precision holes in the air cap or center of the fluid nozzle. A light touch is necessary in these places.
I really appreciate your approach and method for teaching. As a person who teaches screen printing to youth, I see your patience and directness. Since I moved back to Hawaii 18 years ago, I have not tried to garage paint a car because of the adverse conditions(wind/ humidity). I painted my wife’s silver Camry last weekend in a makeshift booth using your tips and it came out incredible. Trying blending next and I know it will come out great because of the wealth of knowledge you have shared. Mahalo nui loa from the middle of the Pacific!
Great video I’m new to all of this , iv done powder coating my whole life but want to go more in this direction now because of my love for automotive’s
Brian, how about a video on adequate compressor size? Week end warriors need to know if their air supply will keep up with the task at hand. Great videos Brian, kinda wish I was a professional painter.
Another great video! I learn this the hard way lol I used to have chunks of clear on my paint job because I didn’t clean my gun properly after every job. It does really go a long way just by spending about 5 mins cleaning your gun right after painting. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with us!
Paint Society I have a question. In the video you mentioned you set up your needle one turn from wide open, is that the same setup you do before spraying clear?
According to the SDS Jasco lacquer thinner is mostly Acetone with a little to no ethanol. I will just use my acetone then. EDIT: Actually, that Klean Strip brand has a completely different Lacquer Thinner cocktail than Jasco. Klean stip is equal parts methanol, acetone, and a petroleum hydrocarbon mixture with acetic acid. toluene, and ethanol the minor ingredients. I might have to source some of that Klean Strip stuff
Never done any thing like this before I'm probably asking a dumb question but since you said we can paint a car from start to finish with one gun so I spray primer and clean the gun and after paint I clean the gun before clear right
I am fairly new to painting cars however I could not afford a top new gun however from a guy the was retiring I purchased a SATA -jet 95 now my first concern it is should I get someone to overhaul it then that way it should be like a new gun ! This gun although old seems to be very well made is this the way to start and move on the same way !! Cheers Brian from the (uk)
@@PaintSociety OMG, IM AN IDIOT. 😉😂. In my defense I missed where you said you were going to reassemble off line as I had to take a phone call. After the call I resumed watching video and noticed gun laying beside rubber gasket. Your video was excellent thank you and forgive my ignorance. Thanks.
You got turned off when you cleaned the air cap atomizing and containment holes using a file! The atomizing and containment holes are drilled a exact angles and you will never match that angle with a metal file.
I didn't shut it off, but laughed and shook my head. kinda like cleaning carburetor jets with a needle file, then wondering why it runs rich afterwards.
My kid sprayed his stuff in my garage with spraycan paint, and I have some slight overspray on the car. How is a good way to remove this? I realize this is not exactly related to this video, but I ran into this while watching this and thought it might somewhat be related. It seems the overspray is paint which dried in the air while floating onto my car.. Hope you can help me out.. mrstan
Dude this is a 700$ gun. I wouldn’t throw my tulip tip, needle and cap in a cup carelessly. Iwata machines every part perfectly for a reason. All ya need is a good aerosol gun cleaner and a brush for that tulip tip. I always put my cap right back on being careful of my tip
All I meant to say is everyone needs to know these tools need to be kept Meticulously clean and take a wrench to them as little as possible. Thanks for the video
Thank You! I was cringing as each one of those meticulously machined metal parts went "CLANK" against the others. Consider the threads on those maleble brass or alloy parts like the air cap and fluid tip. And, Yes, the holes in the air cap and tip are tiny, don't distort them or make them smaller by "tossing" them against other parts, and possibly peening/dinging their edges.
Late to your 2020 video, but maybe you can reply Brian? The air regulator/Guage attached to my paint gun has had paint accidently run over the clear lens. Two separate occasions. When I try to clean the lens with solvent, the lens smears and melts do to a reaction with the solvent. It's so bad I can no longer read the psi. The lens is plastic. Do you know of a air regulator/Guage assembly that comes with a glass lens so I can clean it without having to scrap it and buy another? All I can find online seem to be the same cheap plastic lens types and the product descriptions don't clarify what material the lens is made from. Thank you!
Hey man, thanks for the video. I'm tackling my first project this week, redoing a bumper. It comes already primered so I'll clean it maybe do some light sanding and go straight to base. How should I clean the gun between base and clear?
What about a new gun.that you take out of the box? That may have a oil lubricant in it? A new gun ? Out of box? How can you clean it if it has some kind of stuff in the cap are gun before you use it to paint and you start to paint and oh no what's up it's a mess? I used to paint some im painting my scion xb in my big garage could someone give me a answer to this? Please would be appreciated I will be using a lvlp gun with a 20 gallon Mcgraw air compreser my friend painted my truck with a devolves high pressure gun with this compreser high build primer and base coat and a good uv clear coat and I cut and buffed it after 48 hours it didn't need it but I did it looks like glass jet black but he passed away. But the main?is a new gun as I started in my comment?thank u hope someone will give me a answer because I don't want to screw up from the get go God bless
Thanks. That is a little disappointing to hear. The gun was barely used when the 5000 came out and this fellow stuck it bck in the box as he sometimes buys and uses the latest and greatest this was the leftover form one of those times. The price would have been right. lol Thanks for your appreciated reply. Just for fun, I am looking forward to your cheap harbor freight gun usage. lol
great video brian, i wanted to ask i use 2k paint for all of my classic car projects at home and have always used standard cellulose thinners for my gun cleaning, i don't know how your lacquer thinners would compare, i would be interested to hear what you think about this
HI I have so many questions. I was wondering what you think about arerosol paint gun cleaners. Also my sata jet 90 is old. Do you think I could use paint stripper to clean hard to reach parts inside. I bought an Iwata w400. I didn't realize there were so many different models. It is easier to clean. Also I live in Utah. It's cold and dry. I am painting mostly white transportation vans. No spray booth. Its cold and dry. The shop is heated but the temperature is chilly . Do you still recommend slow slow reducer and hardener for large jobs?
Hi. Yes you can strip it with paint stripper. Make sure there are no plastic gaskets in the gun while you do this. Also for cold temps you can use a normal or medium reducer/hardener
Hi there , thnx for the video. It's hard for me to get any kind of gun lubricant such as SATA IWATA etc. Is there any "trick" if that makes sense , to lube my WS 400 and Bellaria ? You know iwatas get kinda "sticky" to the fluid rod. Thnx.
You want to put the lube at the back side of the trigger, where the little “rod spring” goes into the body. I always use it on the threads of the adjusting knobs
Nice to see you clean a spray gun back to useable and like new. I clean any spray gun I use the second I finish using it. And my favorite thing to use a carb cleaner in the spray can. Disassembly the gun's tip section and spray the carb cleaner through the tip nozzle and internals and even the cup. The paint you used is still uncured at that time and easy to spray out of the tiny holes. I have lots of quality spray guns and everyone is exactly like it was bought new, even after decades of using them. Thumbs Up!
I've found that I spend more time cleaning/prepping before and afterwards way more than I have actually painting. No one tells you that before getting into painting haha. The guns should come with a label that says" I hope you like cleaning me XD" lol. Also I found that guitar strings are also good for cleaning the air passages.
@@teoyota 100% not necessary. Sonic cleaners work well for Motorcycle carb cleaning and general grease/fuel deposit dissolving but IF you let your paint dry inside the gun, you waited far too long to clean it. Time is something that is important BUT if you think you do not HAVE TO do it, then you do not need to be a painter. I have found that keeping a thinner cup handy, you can easily disconnect the paint and blow thinner thru it to buy some time, but you should never wait more than 30 mins to clean your gun. We all have done it and it just takes more cleaning and PATIENCE. This is why many painters use an intercoat application before spraying clear coat......well intercoat IS a clearcoat but it buys you time if you have to wait to apply the clearcoat for any other reasons. Something like C2C-SG100 Shimrin Intercoat Clear 1 Quart or similar works very well. As a painter though you plan your work and spray time to account correctly for the application process. The prep and cleaning far exceeds the actual paint time.
Nice to see someone cleaning a gun with paint on it. Every other video I watched was a guy putting a clean gun in thinner and spending 5 minutes to pretend clean it.
Man...i love this dude! Every video has all the details i need to learn, and the coolest part is that there is zero level of arrogance in his personality! Excellent video!
hey Brian. those little gun cleaning rods are identical to the ones that come in a cutting torch cleaning kit. if you didn't want to wait for a delivery you can pick those up at any hardware for like maybe 5 bucks and usually come with allot more sizes then that. defiantly cheaper your route, than buying the pieces individually ill admit. Its kind of like paying for convenience of getting it now vs waiting. im a mechanic but watching your videos has gotten me spraying a few little things so far. at my shop we have a 20x30 building we use for absolutely nothing since building my new 35x110. so ive been little by little turning it into my body hobbie building haha. its addictive but so rewarding taking ugly and making it pretty. its amazing how much money can be pumped into it so quickly but i really was able to successfully get started with just a cheap gun and a decent compressor and a few odds and ends all by watching your videos. thank you.
Brian, enjoy watching your videos. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! Quick question: do I need to clean after every use a dedicated gun for clear? Your feedback is appreciated.
Hello Brian. Thank you for the replies. They helped me Alot. I repainted the Bumper 3rd time. Now Its Looking Lit af. This is Exactly How i clean my gun too. I use Anest iWata W71. There is a Question i wanna Ask. In some other tutorials I heard they Do not recommend using any kind of Metal for the Air Cap Holes. They recommend Tooth picks. What is better? Teach me Sensei 🙏
@@PaintSociety Go to a pharmacy and pick up some interdental brushes. I use them in my airbrushes and in the finer holes in my Iwata spray guns all the time. They'll clean out those tiny orifices without scratching up the metal or distorting the edges of the passages. They're resistant to lacquer thinner and other solvents and will last for a while, then you can toss it and get another one.
I've been painting off and on for a hobby for 10 years and wish I had watched your videos before. Thank you for taking the guess work out of the process! Which PPS adapter/system do you recommend?
It seems weird and probably not recommended even though I’ve been using it for many years without damaging the spray gun and that is carburetor cleaner.I use it mainly for washing out the cap and nozzle. For waterborne,a mixture of alcohol and demineral water works great.Solvents like thinner seem to quagulate the waterborne paint in the gun and makes it lumpy and difficult to clean out .I use separate guns for waterborne and solvent based paint for that reason
Brian, you are such a great teacher. That is a skill that is more valuable than most others. I appreciate all the work you do to help all of us. Much respect brotha. Happy 4th to you and yours.
Good and helpful video, however i found that the lacquer thinner isn't strong enough to remove all the overspray from clear coat. I have a harbor freight gun that I occasionally used for primer and cheaper sealer, I useing a little bit of paint striper on a brush removes everything that the thinner doesn't. I haven't tryed this technique on my base or clear gun yet due to the fear that it will eat away the rubber seals, I did buy a rebuild kit for my base gun to try out the stripper on the base gun, just to see how she sprays after the stripping, if she's not good I can easily replace the seals and air cap
I have a lot of torch tip cleaners that I hardly use anymore with the addition of the plasma cutter . They also work well and now I seem to have a lifetime supply LOL.
Thanks ever so much Brian for showing us how to break down and clean a paint gun. Your such a great teacher, that comes from 25+ years of experience . This will help me eminencly to do my 2 early 60s Chevy pickups. Thanks again. 😊
Wow, nice tip! I've used to disassemble the gun and throw it in the cleaning machines and leave it the whole program 😅! Not anymore! Thanks for the awesome content!
Thanks for the video. I have a Devilviss spray gun and it has old paint/clear stuck on it pretty good. What is the best chemical I can use to strip off that old paint/clear? I want to get it back to clean so I can keep it that way after each paint job. I don't do this for a living but used to 22 years ago. I used to use Aircraft Stripper but it's no longer made the same way and it doesn't really work all that well. Any recommendations?

Hi Brain! Thanks for all those videos you post here on You Tube. I am following you for a while because I do have plan to paint my Altima 2009. The color come off from the roof and fenders. I have not experience on car paint, but I will try it follow your teaching and I a m very appreciate what do you to help most of us to achieve our project. Most important I would like to know how much paint I need to paint my Nissan Altima sedan 4 doors. I will appreciate. Thanks.
Should have watched this before I painted yesterday. Used my gun to spray epoxy primer first and it was a nightmare to clean after. I missed a few areas while cleaning the gun that caused the gun to spray erratically when I started spraying my single stage paint. You live and you learn. Thanks for the video.
I clean my guns out after every use weather painting or cerakoting with Gumout Carb/Choke cleaner. Its a good non chlorinated solvent that I have found is best. Put that red straw on and spray out the holes in your cap, spray out the nozzle and down in where your gravity cup screws in.. my trash can is full of empty cans of gumout. Saves you on lacquer thinner too which is also why i use 3M pps 2.0 so im not cleaning gravity cups
Wow that’s great info thank you !!!!! Your channel is very informative and direct to the point you are a great teacher thanks for putting so much effort on your channel with all this amazing important information Brian!
is this real lacquer thinner or acetone mix with other unknown stuff. Acetone is about all you can buy now, California and a few other states. Acetone will ruin the guns innards.
I just bought the same cleaning kit, I have a couple but wanted to try the rods.. i was always told not to put any metal through the air cap holes as the tiniest bit of damage will cause the fan to alter. But after your advice I think i will give it a go on one of my cheaper guns and if I see the holes are perfect I'll adopt it into my between job routine. Really excited to see how it changes my end results. My sata 4000 has the smallest holes known to man so not sure if the rod will fit but ill update here for anyone else who uses one. Im sure my sata 3000 and iwatas will be fine as the aircap holes are larger. The 4000 is a bit of a oddball.
